Ge Xu Receives the A' Design Award for House of Dream Public Art in Fine Arts and Art Installation Design

About House of Dream Public Art
House of Dream is a public art sculpture installed in Shenzhen, China. The sculpture is made of stainless steel, LED lighting and PC sheet with a one-way mirror, and it measures 320 centimeters wide, 120 centimeters deep and 400 centimeters high. During the day, the reflective surface mirrors the surrounding environment. At night, changing light forms an inward space. Visitors interact with the work and alter the lighting effects. The sculpture responds to the similar appearance of many new residential buildings and recalls memories of home.
About Ge Xu
The artist Xu ge’s works are composed from his obsession with science, especially with mechanics, physics and electronic control. Deeply influenced by European classical automation art, he focuses on the motion mode of the machine, emitting sounds and the internal poetic appeal. Besides the functionality of the machine, the internal mechanism of producing motion and imitating life accounts for his obsession.

- Unique Properties
- This sculpture is located in ShenZhen,China. Due to the rapid development of many Chinese cities, the design of many residential buildings looks quite similar. People's understanding of home is no longer what it used to be, and the buildings in communities are monotonous rather than diversified. In terms of this sculpture, it would like to animate the space and remind people of their memories of home using lighting. From the visual sense to the spiritual exploration, people can feel the warmth from the old houses and create a poetic dwelling. The works interact with people and change the lighting effects.
- Inspiration
- Home is like fire and water.It illuminates memories as well as things that Couldn’t be recalled. House of light reflects its surroundings in the daytime，Like a hard shell to protect family. whereas at night,the reflection of light extend the space to Infinity and lead to the abyss of human hearts and souls.
- Research
- This works strives to draw lighting into the creation of public art, thus creating a new expression mechanism with the properties of light and new materials. Instead of being a tool to illuminate the sculpture merely, lighting is an essential part of artistic expression.
- Challenge
- The particularity of lighting and new materials is made full use of to create a changeable inward space, which not only is a perfect combination of lighting and sculpture but also needs to take the different effects during daytime and at night into account. The works interact with people and change the lighting effects.
