About Material Dialogue Edificio a uso misto
Profondi balconi sui lati est e sud garantiscono ombreggiamento e spazi esterni riparati. All'interno, una hall a doppia altezza ospita una scala aperta in ghisa e una parete rivestita in piastrelle. Il verde e uno specchio d'acqua addolciscono il contesto industriale.

- Production Technology
- The project incorporates passive design principles, including the orientation of glazed surfaces to optimize natural light while minimizing excessive solar heat gain. Deep balconies on the east and south-facing sides provide shading and create intermediate outdoor spaces. The client's subsequent installation of a significant photovoltaic array on the expansive, optimally oriented roof of the workshop underscores a commitment to renewable energy.
The landscaping design further softens the industrial presence, integrating greenery and a reflecting pond at the front entrance. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also contributes to microclimate regulation, potentially mitigating the impact of the local hot climate. The overall design seeks to create a positive and visually engaging presence within the local industrial context, moving beyond purely functional considerations to embrace architectural quality and corporate identity. - Design Challenge
- The material palette is carefully curated to reflect the client's industry and aspirations. The grounding dark grey stone of the facade alludes to the raw materials of casting, providing a sense of permanence and strength. Contrasting white painted surfaces offer a clean and modern counterpoint. Wood-grain fair-faced concrete adds a textural richness and subtle warmth to specific areas.
Inside, the deliberate use of cast iron for the open staircase and railings reinforces the industrial context while showcasing the potential for intricate craftsmanship. This robust materiality is balanced by the spatial transparency and the curated display of the owner's personal art collection throughout the first floor, transforming the entry into a gallery-like experience that elevates the overall ambiance beyond that of a typical factory. - Inspiration
- Situated on a prominent corner lot at the intersection of two roads, the design capitalizes on its visibility, presenting a dynamic and considered facade from all accessible viewpoints. The core concept revolves around a harmonious interplay between robust materiality, functional clarity, and an infusion of artistic sensibility, creating a workplace that is both efficient and inspiring.
- Project Duration
- The project started in September 2023 and finished end of June 2024 in Xinli County, Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- The building is articulated into distinct yet interconnected volumes that respond directly to programmatic needs and site conditions. The front section, a four-story structure facing the main thoroughfare, houses the corporate offices. Its facade is defined by a strong, dark grey stone frame contrasted with crisp white, vertically oriented masses - a deliberate composition intended to project a sense of stability and contemporary dynamism. Large glazed openings within this section provide ample natural light to the workspaces.
The rear volume, a double-height space, accommodates the primary workshop. Smaller, rhythmic fenestration along the workshop's facade echoes the vertical elements of the office block, creating a visual coherence while catering to the operational requirements of the industrial space. Strategic placement of entrances ensures efficient separation of administrative and operational flows.
Internally, the design prioritizes a welcoming and sophisticated atmosphere, particularly within the entrance lobby. A soaring double-height space features a statement hollow steel staircase leading to the upper office levels. A prominent tile wall adorned with the company logo serves as a focal point, while the open stair design fosters visual connectivity between floors, promoting a sense of airiness and transparency despite the robust materials. - Image Credits
