Designer of the Day Interview

I am a bespoke fine jewellery designer with nearly 40 years of professional design and handcraft experience. I received systematic training in gemmology and elaborate metal craftsmanship early in my career, laying a solid technical foundation for creating works with precious materials.
A remarkable milestone in my career was being invited by a renowned temple to design the head crown for its Buddha statue. It is a great honour and precious karmic connection to complete this sacred ornament. I integrated traditional religious culture with exquisite jewellery making techniques for this piece, applying my years of expertise in fine ornament creation.
My main focus is developing exclusive, one-of-a-kind artistic jewellery for private collectors. I base my creations on profound traditional Eastern philosophies, selecting materials and arranging designs carefully to help wearers balance their bodily energy. This experience of crafting sacred art has deepened my ability to infuse spiritual connotations into handcrafted pieces and shaped my unique design philosophy.

My love for jewellery began entirely of my own accord in early childhood. My mother bought me a bead toy, and with no guidance or pressure from anyone, I began creating jewellery pieces independently. I was able to focus on this pastime for hours on end, developing a sincere love for jewellery from a young age.
As I grew older, I turned this childhood passion into my lifelong career. I completed systematic training in gemmology and intricate metal craftsmanship, and built up decades of hands-on experience to become a bespoke fine jewellery designer.
I chose to pursue design purely out of heartfelt affection for jewellery. I was never pushed to take up this profession. I am endlessly captivated by the aesthetic charm of jewellery. Being a designer lets me create one-of-a-kind artistic pieces, integrate Eastern philosophies to balance the wearer’s bodily energy, and develop exclusive works for private collectors. This innate passion for jewellery has kept me committed to design for decades.

My three core design priorities are drawing inspiration from cosmic connection, embedding the client’s personal love into each work, and ensuring reliable craftsmanship for production.
First, I draw original inspiration by keeping a connection with the universe. I settle my mind to receive intuitive cosmic inspiration, which forms the base of all my hand sketches, as true creation stems from this bond with the cosmos.
Second, I communicate closely with clients. I listen to their ideas and the affection they hope to place in the jewellery, revising my designs repeatedly to fit their needs. Every piece is crafted to carry their unique love and personal story.
Third, I prioritize practical craftsmanship, picking proper materials and viable structures for later production.
I only create hand-drawn sketches personally and do not use any digital design tools myself. Once my final sketches are confirmed, I pass them to specialists to make 3D renderings for manufacturing.
All my works share a fixed core theme: integrating cosmic harmony with each client’s individual love and emotion.
For any new project, I first calm my mind to receive cosmic inspiration for an initial design direction. I then discuss deeply with the client to grasp their feelings, draw sketches and adjust the design continuously, until the work unites cosmic spiritual harmony and the client’s own affection.

I settle into a calm and focused state to gather inspiration before sketching. On one distinct occasion, I pictured my jewellery design surrounded by gentle golden light in my mind. The complete vision of the piece was so beautiful that I was moved to tears. When talking over demands with clients and revising my hand-drawn drafts for them, I hold sincere care to incorporate their affection into the design.
The most exciting phase for me is gaining this clear inspirational vision and drawing it down on paper for the first time. My favourite part of creation is adjusting sketches after communicating with clients, to craft a bespoke design that fits them perfectly.
Designing brings me genuine inner delight. This sense of fulfilment from turning a profound inner vision into a tangible, loving piece of jewellery is a joy that money can never buy. A design must touch my own heart deeply first, and only then can it strike a chord with its owner.

I have developed two key non-design abilities that fuel my success as a jewellery designer.
The first is mastering focused meditation on demand. It shuts out outside noise so I can access original, intuitive inspiration for my pieces, developing distinct creative ideas that cannot be replicated by others.
The second is empathetic client communication. I am able to pick up on my clients’ quiet feelings and the affection they wish to place into custom-made jewellery. This lets me customise every design to align with their personal stories, and my clients consistently value these personalised works deeply.
What has shaped my design approach more than anything is my commitment to original hand sketching. Since I began designing, I have avoided ready-made templates entirely. I translate the creative visions I receive into drawings myself, and refine each sketch little by little based on what my clients need. This consistent habit has allowed me to make heartfelt, entirely unique jewellery throughout my career.

My growth as a designer started with polishing my original hand sketching skills and gaining creative inspiration through meditation to make jewellery infused with genuine feelings. As I worked on more custom designs, I formed a firm core belief: outstanding design and aesthetic enjoyment ought not be reserved exclusively for the wealthy. Great design succeeds when its beauty can be appreciated and owned by people from all walks of life.
Looking ahead, I will keep developing my artistic jewellery design concepts and take part in international design events to share my design philosophy worldwide. I will make long-term preparations to establish my own independent jewellery brand.
My dream design project is founding a touching jewellery brand built on universal love. Every piece of jewellery from this brand will be created with abundant sincere emotion and elaborate artistic design, made to resonate deeply and move those who wear them. I strive to make works carrying beauty and warm affection accessible to broader audiences of all financial means. A portion of sales revenue will be donated to charitable causes. With this brand, I wish to prove that the priceless emotional power of thoughtful design has no financial barriers, and bring the integration of jewellery art, aesthetics and love to countless people.

My key advice for new designers is to always focus on original work and avoid over-relying on AI. AI designs feel rigid and lack heartfelt warmth, as they only remix existing works rather than carrying your own unique feelings.
Broaden your inspiration by visiting museums and studying different forms of art regularly. Real artistic exposure helps you build a one-of-a-kind aesthetic sense that cannot be copied by machines.
Never ignore practicality in your design. A beautiful piece that cannot be worn or used comfortably serves no real purpose. Strike a balance between artistic expression and everyday usability.
Grow your knowledge by learning from experienced creators, and let your own genuine observations and emotions sit at the heart of every design you make.

To fellow designers, artists and architects, feel free to let your imagination wander freely and craft bold creative concepts. A design does not have to be highly practical for daily use to hold value; it only needs to be visually pleasing and comforting to behold, helping viewers cultivate and elevate their aesthetic taste. A strong sense of aesthetics will be an increasingly precious skill in the world ahead. Designers carry significant weight in building a beautiful future, for our core work is creating beauty to share with others, which makes this a truly noble and meaningful profession.
I maintain a relaxed and natural pace throughout my working days. I spend plenty of time reading books and studying art materials constantly, and regularly visit museums, travel to different places to observe diverse scenery and cultures, and casually collect all kinds of inspiration from the world around me. I never force creative work; these accumulated observations and impressions become a rich reserve of materials that I can draw from whenever I start designing jewellery later on.
I do not follow or chase prevailing design trends at all. I create freely according to my own artistic intuition and preferences, with no pursuit of fleeting fashion styles. While I acknowledge varied personal aesthetics among people, I aim to break rigid, outdated conventional mindsets in my creation, yet I will never blindly copy popular trends. I only take casual notice of trends as a passive reference of public tastes rather than a guide for my work. My inspiration comes from museums, travel and diverse artworks, and I devote myself to developing my own unique and timeless design language that stays true to myself.
I define good design as a creation that blends distinctive artistic character, practical functionality, lasting collectible value and subtle visual appeal for its user. Pieces made only for competitions or exhibitions have little practical value in daily life, since their overcomplicated structures are not suited for regular use. I instantly recognize a successful design when it fits daily routine use, carries enough refined charm for the owner to display on suitable occasions, and maintains steady long-term value sought by collectors. One common design flaw to steer clear of is focusing on eye-catching but unworkable details purely for display purposes. My core standards for judging a design are practical performance, enduring collectible value, one-of-a-kind original style, and proper aesthetics that allow the owner to showcase the work proudly.
I will regard my design as ready only after repeated revisions and double confirmation from both myself and the client. First of all, the design drawing must satisfy my own artistic standards and align with my original creative idea. After I approve the draft, I will present it to the client for review and feedback. No design can be finalized right after the initial sketch; adjustments and modifications are almost always necessary. I will revise the work continuously according to the client’s demands until they are fully content with every detail.
A design has truly reached its completed state only when I am satisfied with its artistic quality and the client approves it wholeheartedly. I hold the view that there is no absolute perfect design, yet I stop further revisions once both sides reach full agreement, so as to move forward to fabrication and other new projects. I seldom adjust a fully confirmed finished design afterward. To me, a project turns into a success when the finalized work wins mutual recognition from myself and the client, and meets the wearer’s needs for daily use, collection and presentation.

My biggest design work is The One Bodhi Leaf, my most cherished jewellery piece. The entire process from initial idea to finished product took nearly two years, the longest development period of any work I have ever made, and the journey was full of difficulties.
I created this single bodhi leaf piece for its quiet oriental symbolic meaning. My original goal was to capture the natural elegance of one leaf, creating a simple wearable jewel with inner spiritual meaning and no unnecessary embellishments.
Over the two years of handcrafting, I revised the design many times. The hardest part was hunting for suitable gemstones and raw materials to match the texture of a real bodhi leaf; good materials were very hard to find. I completed all designing and crafting work by hand with no computers. I only faced digital difficulties when submitting this work to the A' Design Award: my weak computer skills made filling out detailed online forms and uploading materials much more time-consuming for me.
This piece represents my years of handcraft experience and two years of perseverance, so I consider it my finest work. It won an A' Design Award, which is great encouragement to me. I am thankful for the award’s well-structured system; taking part has given me many learning opportunities and connections with global designers to expand my outlook.
Its speciality lies in its minimalist single-leaf shape, which holds rich symbolic meaning while being practical for daily wear. My main challenges were sourcing rare materials, repeated manual revisions, and the complex online award application process.
Finishing this work after two years of efforts brought me great satisfaction. I am now developing new jewellery inspired by natural forms, ready to apply what I have learned from this project to my upcoming creations.

Wallace Chan is my favourite jewellery designer. He is highly creative, and his works are classic and beautiful with powerful artistic value. Unlike many designers who copy others, he completes all his designs entirely on his own with original concepts.
To be honest, my lifestyle and work are pretty much the same thing. I grew up in Hong Kong and also studied in the US and Canada. I’m deeply influenced by both Eastern and Western cultures, and this cultural blend inspires all my creations.
I work entirely on my own as an independent designer, taking care of every single part of the work. I communicate openly and sincerely with clients, and I always stick to my original creative ideas.
I insist on making original, high-quality works and never copy others. Running everything alone is challenging at times, but I keep exploring and staying innovative. In my opinion, a great designer needs curiosity, perseverance and the courage to create.

As an independent designer, my work culture is built on open communication, integrity, and respect for original creativity. I work mostly alone, and when selecting partners or collaborators, I value honesty, reliability, and a shared passion for quality work. It’s easy to work with me because I’m flexible, open to feedback, and transparent in communication.
My business philosophy is to stay true to my creative vision while meeting clients’ needs, never compromising on originality or craftsmanship. I take full responsibility for every stage of my projects. The core challenges include balancing creativity with business demands and staying inspired under deadlines. I think a good designer, artist, or architect should have curiosity, resilience, courage to take risks, patience, adaptability, and a willingness to learn.

I have created design works for temples completely free of charge. I do not charge any design fees, and I also cover all the material costs on my own. These works are my donations to the temples.
To me, design is never just about making products for sale. It carries warmth and care. I often help clients with limited financial means by waiving my design fees, as I hope to use my skills to give back to the community.
I fully support creators who take part in humanitarian projects. I also share my experience at design events to encourage young designers. Good design should bring positive value to people and the whole society.

Taking part in this international design competition was a great learning experience. I had quite a few difficulties as I am not good with computers. I learned all the rules and steps entirely on my own. In my sixties, this is such a new experience for me.
I am really grateful to A' Design Award for offering me so many opportunities and helping me learn a lot. Winning the award also gives me new plans. Many people advise me to start doing self-media, and I want to have a try. I think it is really fun.

I am a GIA certified gemologist with over 40 years of professional experience in art jewelry design. My creations perfectly integrate Eastern and Western culture and aesthetics.
A strong sense of achievement motivates my designs. I feel immense joy when people appreciate my creations. I believe this creative talent is a gift from the universe, and I am truly passionate about what I do. That is why, even in my sixties, I have no desire to retire at all.
I chose this path entirely on my own. It feels like I was born for this. Even as a very young child, I loved stringing beads and making my own little bracelets, even with simple plastic beads. Design has always been my true passion, never something I was forced into.
I design art jewelry that blends Eastern and Western aesthetics, rooted in my background as a GIA-certified gemologist. Moving forward, I want to create more of this culturally fused art jewelry, so that more people can experience and embrace this cross-cultural vision through my work.
They should stay hungry to learn, and never stop honing their craft. Most importantly, they must create from their own true passion, never copying others. Stay humble, keep their hearts open, and let their genuine love for design guide their work. Great things always grow from that pure, inner devotion.
A good designer creates beautiful pieces that resonate with most people, crafting works that many can love and appreciate. But a truly great designer is unbound by convention. They see the impossible as possible, dare to break every boundary others hesitate to cross, even if the world calls them unconventional or even crazy. They are like messengers of the divine, sent to rewrite the rules and bring new visions into the world.
A truly good design must be original and should not copy others’ creations. It should not be overly exaggerated or overly conceptual. Some pieces are only made for competitions; they are too extreme to be worn in public at all. For me, practicality is essential. A fine design should at least be wearable enough to be worn out for occasions, instead of being something you can only keep for show.
The core value of great design lies in aesthetics. All human beings love and pursue beauty in life.
We should invest time in good design, for it shapes our taste and makes our whole life warmer, nicer and far more beautiful.

If I had enough time, I would craft a series of soulful jewelry embedded with unique life stories and sincere eternal love. I design for every person, men and women equally, who cherish emotional warmth and spiritual beauty. I hope my creations can deeply touch people’s hearts, carry precious lifelong memories, and pass down gentle love forever.
My dream project is to redefine the true meaning of jewelry.
I believe jewelry is never meant only for the wealthy.
Every design I create is born out of love.
We give jewelry to someone because we truly love and cherish them.
It holds beautiful memories and precious feelings deep inside.
Even if time goes by, or someone is no longer with us,
the jewelry remains as a timeless keepsake,
preserving all the love and wonderful memories forever.
I hope to dedicate my professional skills to voluntary and charitable work.
I wish to design meaningful jewelry for people with touching life stories,
to turn their deepest love and precious moments into eternal treasures.
This is my heartfelt dream that I hope to fulfill one day.

My secret ingredient is heartfelt care. I don’t just design jewelry; I design for the love and memories each piece will carry
My biggest inspiration comes from Wallace Chan (陳世英). As a Chinese jewelry legend, his poetic craftsmanship and boundary-breaking designs have always amazed me.
I am inspired by Wallace Chan. His work is incredibly creative and pushes the boundaries of jewelry craftsmanship
My greatest design is a piece I made for someone special. It was created with love, and every detail holds a precious memory, making it truly unique.
People can improve by never stopping learning and observing the world around them. For me, I kept practicing, learning new skills, and always put my heart into every design.
If I hadn’t become a designer, I would have been something related to art or beauty
To me, design is not just about beauty. It is about creating something that holds love and meaning for the person who wears it.
I am my own biggest supporter. For decades, I have stayed true to my passion and never given up on my dreams
What helped me become a great designer is my refusal to give up and my unwavering commitment to my original intention.
There were many obstacles along the way, but because I love what I do, I was happy to overcome every single one of them.
Designers should present their work with honesty, passion, and the story behind each piece. It is not just about showing beauty, but also about sharing the meaning and emotion that make the work unique.
I will continue to create jewelry that carries love and meaning. You can expect more heartfelt pieces that blend classic craft with modern beauty, always staying true to my original intention.
My ultimate goal is to create timeless jewelry that connects with people’s hearts, bringing them warmth and meaning for a lifetime.
People can expect sincerity, passion, and pieces that are made with heart, not just skill. They expect designs that are not only beautiful, but also carry lasting meaning. No
Design can bring beauty and warmth into people’s lives, reminding them of love and meaning. It connects people through shared emotion, making the world a more heartfelt and human place.
I am working on a new jewelry collection that blends classic craftsmanship with modern elegance, designed to carry personal stories and emotions for the wearer.
The project that has given me the most satisfaction is my Bodhi Leaf Collection—and it began with a heartbreak I still remember vividly.
I created this piece for a client who initially loved the concept. But this wasn’t just any commission for me. I poured so much more than just design work into it. I tailored every single detail to their five elements, crafting a piece that I truly believed would bring them balance, harmony, and good fortune. I barely charged them for my design work, too. This was never about money. I just wanted to give them something made with genuine care, something that could be a quiet, meaningful blessing in their life.
When the piece was finished, though, they told me they “didn’t like it anymore.” It wasn’t the design that had changed. It was the final cost of the craftsmanship—hand-set stones, rare materials, the hours of hand-finishing work—that exceeded their expectations. And suddenly, the piece they once loved felt like a burden.
I was devastated. My pride as a designer took a real blow. For over 40 years, my work has always been about connection and intention, and to have a piece I’d poured my heart into dismissed, not for the art itself, but because of the numbers? It stung. I couldn’t help but question if my work, my care, my vision, was truly seen.
That hurt, though, became my fuel. I decided to enter this exact piece into the A' Design Award—not for the trophy, but to prove something to myself: that my work has inherent value, that the intention and craft I pour into each piece is worthy of standing on a global stage.
When I received the Silver Award, it was more than just validation. It felt like the world was saying, “We see what you did here. We see the heart in it.” This project didn’t just give me satisfaction. It gave me back my confidence. It taught me that my worth as a designer isn’t defined by one client’s budget or fleeting opinion. It’s defined by the love, the intention, and the integrity I bring to every single piece I create.

I would love to see more truly creative, original, and lively works in the design world.
I’m tired of so many designs that look the same, dull and repetitive.
I hope more designers dare to create from the heart, with their own soul and imagination—not just follow trends or copy others.
Design should be alive, full of personality and spirit.
I wish the industry would value genuine creativity more.
Let us see works that are fresh, inspiring, and full of artistic feeling—not flat, boring, or made just for profit.
For me, design is about passion, beauty, and meaning.
I hope in the coming year, we can see more heartfelt, unique, and unforgettable creations.

I believe the design field is moving toward more meaningful, soul-driven creations.
We’ve seen so much fast, mass-produced, trend-chasing design, but I think people are starting to crave something deeper. They want pieces that carry a story, intention, and genuine connection—not just something that looks good for a season.
For jewelry especially, I see a shift back to handcraft, originality, and emotional resonance. People are tired of seeing the same designs everywhere. They want something unique, made with care, that feels personal and alive.
Design is no longer just about aesthetics. It’s about purpose, heart, and the energy a creator pours into their work. The future belongs to those who dare to be different, who create from the soul, and who make pieces that truly matter.

It really depends on the inspiration.
When the idea flows easily, the design can come together pretty quickly. But when I don’t feel the right energy for it, I won’t rush it. I’ll take more time to refine details, choose materials carefully, and let the design settle until it feels just right.
I don’t believe in forcing a design just to meet a timeline. It takes as long as it takes to feel right—whether that’s a few days or a few weeks.

I start by communicating with the client first. I listen to their needs, the stories or emotions they want the jewelry to carry, and their style preferences. Only after understanding them fully do I move on to sketches and design details.
My motto is: Listen with heart, create with love.
I believe good original design sets the trends.
Real creation leads fashion, instead of simply following it.

Technology is a helpful tool for me, but I do not rely on it.
I depend on my own inspiration and I mostly design by hand sketching.

Color and materials are very important in my design. Color expresses emotion, materials give life to the work, and ambient helps me better imagine the wearing effect.
I wish people would ask me why I designed this piece, and the story behind my creation.
I admire and learn from excellent designs by others.
I take inspiration from them, while still keeping my own original creative style.

I believe in co-design, but only with someone who has a spiritual connection and similar artistic vibe.
Only when our soul and aesthetic level match perfectly can we create great works together.

The clients I have worked with have had the greatest influence on my design.
Every client’s unique story, emotions, and needs inspire me to create jewelry that carries their memories and feelings.
They make my designs more personal and heartfelt.

They make my designs more personal and heartfelt.
nstead of books, I draw most of my inspiration from museums, exhibitions, sculptures, architecture, and everyday objects. Short texts and visual experiences have influenced my design more than formal books.
My skills as a designer have been shaped by over 40 years of unwavering practice, every client’s unique story, and the constant pursuit of heartfelt creation. Each piece I make teaches me to see beauty and emotion more deeply, refining my craft one design at a time.
If I could meet anyone, it would be the pioneering jewelry designers and master craftsmen who redefined the art of jewelry. I would love to learn about their vision, their passion, and how they brought their creative visions to life.
I feel deeply grateful for every award and recognition I’ve received. They are not just honors, but also a warm affirmation of my over 40 years of dedication to jewelry design, and a recognition of the stories and emotions I put into each piece. As for whether it’s hard to be famous, I would say yes. True fame doesn’t come overnight. It requires years of unwavering practice, constant refinement of craft, and staying true to your creative heart. What matters most to me is not fame, but the trust of my clients and my passion for jewelry design.
My favorite colors are white, black, blue, grey, gold and khaki. My favorite places are museums, art galleries and quiet nature spaces. I love peaceful places with artistic ambiance, and nature brings me great creative inspiration. I enjoy authentic local fine cuisine from different regions, and I prefer natural organic food that brings positive energy. My favorite season is autumn. I am fond of antiques and cultural relics with historical and artistic depth. I do not favor any modern commercial brands, as I am more attracted to antique pieces with cultural value and inner soul.
A warm little memoir that has stayed with me is when I finished a custom piece for a client. When he first saw it, he said, “This design feels like it has a light inside it—it seems to have a spirit, like it’s glowing.” I smiled at his words, but I was deeply touched. That moment reminded me: the jewelry we create isn’t just stones and metal; it carries intention, care, and energy—and sometimes, that is exactly what people feel when they hold it.
What makes my day great is the quiet, focused moments of creation, and the feeling that my work carries positive energy and meaning for the people who wear it. To motivate myself, I remind myself that every piece I make is not just jewelry—it is a vessel for intention, care, and connection, and that purpose keeps me inspired to keep creating with heart.
Looking back, it feels as if I was born to create. Even as a small child, I would sit quietly for hours, threading plastic beads into my own bracelets and necklaces, completely lost in the joy of designing something new. Back then, I didn’t know I would grow into a jewelry designer, but that innate passion for creating beauty with my hands was already deeply rooted in me.
I think the world will keep changing very fast. With the rapid development of AI and technology, life styles and people’s needs will be totally different. Maybe in a thousand years, people may no longer need to wear physical jewelry, and traditional designers might no longer be needed. Everything will transform along with the times.
For me, art is the most tender language of the soul.
I am born with a natural devotion to artistic beauty, and I pour all my heart into every original creation. I truly hope everyone can understand that every piece of my design is made with sincere love and gentle energy.
My works are never merely decorations; they carry my inner affection, heartfelt blessings and quiet spiritual power. I always respect the essence of art, insist on original creation, and use my lifetime persistence to convey warmth, love and positive energy to every soul who appreciates art and beauty.

Designer Interview

Since I was very young, I loved beads and used to make bracelets by myself. At that age, I did not know about traditional cultural theories at all. I simply felt that jewellery is something warm that can pass on love. I keep working as a designer all these years because I truly love what I do. It makes me happy, and creating new designs always gives me a strong sense of accomplishment.
I work as an independent jewelry designer. I have collaborated with different partners in the past, but I now focus entirely on my own one-of-a-kind art jewelry creations. I run my practice on my own, and every piece is designed and made with my full personal attention and passion.
For me, design is all about bringing something new into the world. I see myself as a creator, someone who listens to the quiet ideas and feelings that come to me, and then gives them a tangible form. It’s like being a channel for inspiration. I take these invisible thoughts and turn them into jewelry that people can hold, wear, and love. That’s what makes creating so special to me—turning nothing into something meaningful.
I’m not drawn to commercial, mass-produced designs. What I love most is creating unique, one-of-a-kind art jewelry—pieces that feel personal, meaningful, and true to the wearer. For me, the magic is in making something that isn’t just a pretty accessory, but a work of art that carries emotion, energy, and a story. I want each piece to feel special, like it was meant for that one person, not just made for sale.
My favorite design is the Bodhi Leaves series.
I spent a great deal of time thinking and designing it with great care. The Bodhi leaf is very spiritual and full of life.
One day I closed my eyes, and I clearly saw glowing leaves in my mind. That inspired me greatly, and I began to create the piece following that feeling.
It feels very meaningful to me, because my surname is also Yip, which means leaf. This design represents me perfectly, and I have a deep affection for this leaf theme.
Most importantly, this Bodhi Leaves artwork has also won an award.

I have never worked for a company, nor have I created designs for commercial clients. I have always worked as an independent art jewelry designer, creating original, one-of-a-kind pieces based on my own inspiration and for individual clients.
My favorite materials are high-quality natural gemstones and fine precious metals, especially 18K gold. I choose only the finest, most unique stones because I believe that exceptional quality is the foundation of meaningful, lasting jewelry. Each gemstone has its own natural beauty and energy, and I want my designs to honor that. I don’t use mass-produced materials or rely on high-tech platforms; instead, I work with these premium materials by hand to create pieces that feel truly special and timeless.
I feel the most creative when I am alone and quiet, especially when I close my eyes and calm my mind. Sometimes, design ideas even come to me in my dreams. I also feel deeply inspired when I’m in nature, because being surrounded by natural energy helps me connect with my intuition. For me, the energy around me is very important. In a peaceful, natural, and positive energy field, my creativity flows freely.
When I design, I focus most on layered structure and sculptural feeling. I like my works to be vivid and lively, never rigid or dull. I always pursue designs with natural vitality and positive energy, instead of following ordinary commercial styles.
When I design, I feel fully immersed and passionate. The best emotional feeling for me is being moved by my own work—as I shape the ideas and see the design come to life, I’m touched by the effort and creativity I put into it, which brings me a deep sense of satisfaction and self-movement.
When my designs are realized, I feel an overwhelming sense of joy, pride, and deep self-movement. All the effort and creativity I put in during the design process come to life, and seeing the finished work makes me feel truly fulfilled and moved by my own creation.
To me, a successful design isn’t about winning awards or following trends. It’s about creating something that carries real emotion and life—something that can move the person who made it, and move the person who wears it. When a piece holds my energy, my story, and my heart, and when it connects with someone else on a deep, personal level, that’s when I know it's truly successful. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being alive.
When I judge a design, the first thing I look for is that instant visual impact—the kind of eye appeal that draws you in right away. Then I check if it’s actually practical: not just beautiful to look at, but wearable and functional in real life. To me, the best designs strike a balance between strong aesthetics and everyday use, no empty frills, no impractical fantasy.
To me, a designer’s core responsibility is to create with intention. That means choosing materials and processes that don’t harm the planet, avoiding overproduction and waste, and making pieces built to last—not just disposable trends. For society, it means designing with purpose: creating work that adds meaning to people’s lives, instead of just feeding endless consumption.
The design industry has changed a lot in recent years. AI image generation is now widely used, and it does bring great convenience and huge help to designers.
However, AI works are lack of inner depth and individuality. Too many similar designs have flooded the market, making the whole industry overly homogenized.
I believe design should return to simplicity and originality. We should rely more on personal imagination and hand-drawn sketches. Only creations coming from the designer’s own thoughts and inspiration can have real value and unique charm.

My only exhibition was during my study in Canada. When I finished my jewelry design and jewellery manufacturing course, my works were displayed in the school exhibition.
After that, I no longer participated in exhibitions. I have joined two design competitions instead, and I was awarded prizes in both of them.

My inspiration comes from very practical sources. It usually starts from deep communication with my clients, to fully understand their personalized design needs.
I rely heavily on quiet meditation and inner peace. Calming my mind helps ideas emerge naturally. Being close to nature also brings me plenty of genuine creative thoughts.
Besides that, I constantly study various artworks and fashion media to enrich my creative vision.

My design style is rooted in practicality and quiet beauty. I like to keep things clean and focused, letting the material and the wearer’s personality shine through, rather than overcrowding the piece with details.
I developed this style over years of working closely with clients. I’ve learned that the most meaningful pieces are the ones that feel like an extension of the person who wears them, not just a display of skill.
My approach is simple: I start by listening, then I sketch by hand, and I refine every detail until it feels right. I prioritize comfort, durability, and personal meaning over trends.

I have lived in many countries and traveled to many places. Actually, no matter where I live, it does not really influence my design style. My creativity comes mainly from quiet meditation, communication with clients, being close to nature, and learning from different works of art. My design idea follows my inner heart, not the culture of the place where I stay.
I am a freelance artist and independent designer. I do not work with any company. I create all my designs on my own and work directly with clients.
For companies working with designers, I suggest giving designers full creative trust and clear communication about project needs.
To select a good designer, I recommend looking at their original design philosophy and understanding of the client’s needs, rather than just their portfolio popularity.

I start by listening to the client’s story, then sketch by hand, refine details, and finalize the piece.
My favorite design items at home are: an antique cabinet, a natural seashell lamp, my own self-designed jewelry pieces, some design projects I made when studying, and a simple vintage table lamp.
I enjoy a relaxed daily routine. I take care of my plants and love gardening every day. I keep up with light exercise regularly and take time for daily meals, loving a quality lifestyle. I spend much of my spare time reading and learning about traditional Chinese medicine, health preservation, metaphysics and art. I also collect design inspiration every day, and I do meditation at noon to keep my mind calm and focused.
Stay true to yourself, keep learning constantly, and observe life carefully.
Learn from art, nature and traditional culture, and always design with sincerity.

From my perspective, the positive side of being a designer is being able to create unique artwork and express personal creativity freely, while the negative side is spending a lot of time on creation and having to balance personal ideas with practical needs.
Design with heart, stay original, and respect quality and nature.
The most important skills for a jewelry designer are the ability to turn imaginative ideas into real pieces, solid mastery of jewelry craftsmanship and production techniques, and a strong sense of practicality. A good design should not be exaggerated or unrealistic; it must be wearable, functional and able to be perfectly made into a finished product.
I create hand-drawn sketches first, then send the drafts to professional 3D modelers to make 3D renderings. I don't use any design software myself.
Design work can be quite time-consuming. I manage my time by making hand-drawn sketches at my own pace and arranging my design schedule in a well-organized way. I only focus on the design creation itself.
I can finish a design quickly when inspiration comes naturally. Without inspiration, it may take a long time with many rounds of revisions until the work is perfect.
The most common question I get is "Where do you find your inspiration?" or "How long does a design take from start to finish?"
My most important experience was working on a personal creative project that fully expressed my design philosophy, which helped me establish my unique design style.
have collaborated with independent creative studios, agents and individual art collectors on custom design projects.
I enjoy hand-drawn creative design the most, because it lets me freely express my ideas and emotions without too many technical restrictions
I plan to explore more creative design styles, take on more personalized custom projects, and share my design concepts with a wider audience.build up social media!
I mainly develop my designs independently, but I will communicate with other creative professionals for feedback during the process
I am currently working on a new jewelry project for a client. I have finished the hand-drawn design draft, and it is now being made into 3D models.
You can contact me via email at Ritayip@qq.com or through my Instagram account @ritayip.artjewels.
Beyond jewelry design, I also create wood carvings and design sacred crowns for Buddha statues in temples. I believe a truly versatile designer is not limited to one medium, but can bring creativity and craftsmanship to different forms of art.
