Designer of the Day Interview

18 March 2018

8 years and we are now one of the top residential interior design firm in Malaysia. We are well-known within the South East Asia region. We are also forward-thinking and outward-thinking. We think of ourselves to have the responsibility of helping the entire industry up in the country through collaborations, contributions and planning with education hubs, media partners, government, NGOs and etc.

I was about to enroll myself into an Engineering degree. However, I wanted something that is less technical and more design-oriented, yet makes money. Henceforth, Architecture was the way to go albeit the long path. When I was younger, I always dream that the places I live in in Malaysia could have more beautiful looking buildings that the world would fly here to see.

Humane, For the users and provoking in terms of ideas. We do a lot of sketching, trials and errors, build them with 3D softwares to test the natural lighting, test the best possible construction methods. Then we work closely with our suppliers and specialist to pick the most optimum materials that would best represent our ideas whilst keeping the cost in check on behalf of our clients.

Lifted. We need to be true to ourselves and ask ourselves what keep us going. Dreaming big and having fiery passions do that. Knowing a finished product works for the users give us a true sense of purpose in our works.

Interior School professors, media partners, furniture suppliers, experience senior clients we meet along the way and our families give us encouragements and keeps us focused. We have to have an open mind and be opened to all possibilities and realize there are endless possibilities in order to see our design and company flourish in many possible ways.

First and foremost, we want to be grounded and slow but steadily grow the company. As proven, within 8 years, we are now one of the leading residential interior design firms in Malaysia. In the last 3 years, we are also well-known for pitching designer-nature projects - i.e. car show rooms, residential show units, property sales galleries, common facilities of large residential and commercial buildings. We hope one day we can establish ourselves as leading consultancy firm that serves the ASEAN region, with original design ideas originated based on our roots and the influences we have had over the years in Malaysia.

Stay true to your dreams and philosophies. There are no short cuts. You go too fast, you hit a roadblock even harder. We understood clearly time was needed to master different skills and expose ourselves to new opportunities. There is no point getting to a place where the opportunity presents itself, but you are not ready. We plan to attend more seminars and conferences, participate in new courses to diversify our skill sets.

Keep to your core values. Remember your roots. And remember who you are doing all these things for. Never take short cuts, however be good at identifying opportunities. If they do not come to you, you go to them.

The people we meet each day, the news we hear, the books we come across, they all influence us. It is a matter whether we are open to receive them. It is a choice whether we want to seek knowledge or open ourselves to be inspired. We believe it is up to one self to ignite one's own passion by choice.

We believe one should not be defined by a single style. Even if you do, your style should be ever evolving depending on the changing times and the world we live in. User behaviors change, technology evolves, integrations are expected across the industries. However, just remember to be timeless. Constantly chasing after trends in today's pace is futile.

It is designed for the user. Aesthetically provoking and edgy, cost is efficient, it serves the wider audience on an equal basis. It is timeless. It helps directly or indirectly our mother Earth.

There will always be room for improvement. However, we must also understand that certain things are right at that moment in time and at that place. Alternatively, it is up to us to decide whether to continue pursuing the idea of perfecting the design or move on.

We are excited that we have garnered support in terms of our designs. People enjoy seeing our works and believe in our design philosophies. To be able to present and sell our ideas confidently, it is a priceless feeling. The more so if we are dealing with corporate clients, which are usually more exposed, and they think that we forward-thinking and our works are fresh. We would like to think of our works being not bounded by where we are based at which means our works have to meet international standards and are fitted to various types of people.

Zaha Hadid. What she did was avant-garde. Forward-thinking and paving way for the rest of us.

Being Malaysians, we are very inclined to seek knowledge and inspirations from abroad. We are a society immersed in commerce and revolve around advancing our lifestyles through increasing our standard of living. It would take some more time before we can slowly move our society to understand that besides money, design and many other things play a part in enhancing our lives.

We groom individuals and value each of their ideas and approaches. In return, we would like to see them grow at their own pace independently. Through this process, they learn to better themselves constantly and discover their strengths and weaknesses. Afterall, no one is the same. And through this process, we are able to mold different individuals to play different roles, to excel in different tasks and grow the company together.

Besides the business, we are very much into attending school talks and critic sessions. Moreover, we also contribute to the local media through talks, sharing of experience, Q&As and showcasing our works to the wider public so they are exposed to new ideas and the ever-changing concepts that would direct and indirectly affect all of us.

To see the world consists of so many creative minds that keep challenging themselves to create new ideas and designs that would hopefully benefit humanity and earth itself.

Design Legend Interview

22 October 2019

Graduated as an Architect, but turned to Interior Design as I feel it gives better balance between creativity and running a business.

Some people are born and some are trained to have an eye for aesthetics. No matter which, once you have it, you would question how things come about, designed the way they are and why.

I chose this field, albeit it took a while to get to where I am today. I believe the journey matters. You do not always end up with what you want but it is important to notice every door that opens along the way for you.

Interiors and exteriors of buildings. We hope one day we can touch base on public installations.

Work hard and be unique.

You have to be a visionary to be a great designer. Look beyond.

It is designed appropriately for the users and leaves a lasting impact to the people and environment.

Good design will most likely give a lasting impact, you almost cannot put a value on that.

I would like to design public installations for Malaysians to value public spaces and arts.

Public installations.

Besides yourself, it is important that the studio's visions are understood by your team and that every single member sees those and go the distance with you.

Tadao Ando and modern low bro artists in the Art field.

They created past movements, they reached out to all corners of the world.

Our projects with briefs meant for an international audience. We had to be familiar with different people, what they are familiar with back home, their culture, their take on what is good design and etc. It opens up our minds to new things and this always sets new bars for our studio to go for.

Realize the changing times and the need to be always evolving.

Archaeologist

Design makes our life better and comforting aesthetically.

My business partners and team members.

Constantly feel inspired and push yourself to be original.

We had to be good at the business side of this industry, keep the company afloat and going. This is not something designers are trained for at school, obviously. Unknowingly, we would pick up a lot of other skills when managing a company and as such, those skills will ultimately help and advance us on the design side too.

Imagine selling an identity, it is important to build confidence and have a sense of belief that you are doing things that could make things better for the people, country and the world. Whatever it is, believe in every dot of your pen marks and the ideas that you have inputted in.

We are looking at touching base on offices spaces and common areas in large commercial buildings.

It is to be the best in what we do in Malaysia and represent Malaysian creative interior minds and see them realized all over the world.

They would expect a well-rounded design that stand out from the rest and that you are able to interpret it out in a story-telling manner that makes perfect sense to them.

That things can be improved and become better. That we are appreciative of beautiful things, done humanely for ourselves.

We are currently working on some very interesting large common areas for commercial buildings. This is something new to us and we are eager to venture into. Our clients put their trusts in us and give us lots of room for creativity.

All our projects, because it is amazing to see how the initial brief sets the plan in motion and the end product encompasses the designer's creative inputs. We approach each project differently because we believe not one client is the same and that makes us take on different stances which result in beautiful variations of our company's design interpretations.

Design stems from creativity and creativity comes from one's intellect. Hence, I hope that people see the significance in that and see the value in one's creativity.

Slowly recognized in our country as we put emphasis on commerce all the while.

3 months on average.

Gather the direct information on the user(s).

Passion & Dreams.

Design always trigger the trends that follow. But trends evolve based on location, people, the environment, the economy, technology and etc.

Simplify matters and problems. Also allows us to achieve the impossible by letting us visualize them.

AutoCaD, 3Ds Max and VRay.

Brings out the mood, the emotional reactions of those who see or experience them.

Who is this design for? I think it is important to know the origin of the project or design.

Form and function and the level of pushing the threshold.

Yes, design comes out best when working in a team. That would be our current business partners.

Trial and error plus taking up new advance courses. It takes time too to evolved as one ages.

Definitely Andy Warhol, would like to meet a designer outside the architecture and interior design realm.

It is not, but to meet others' expectations is. And whether or not you can be consistent is also vital.

Recently mesmerized with the colour teal and travels to London keeps us inspired.

A happy client, we are in the service industry after all. One of our main objectives is to make one's client happy by fulfilling and exceeding their expectations.

Growing up with Lego, yes, I was very interested with constructions and imaginative forms. It would make some sense now that whatever you engaged with when you were young, would influence you in one way or another.

Design will be seamless, based on futuristic material and constructed fluidly bypassing standard conventional construction methods.

We wish to show the world that Malaysian designers are dedicated and passionately want to establish their own identity. As such, we are very competitive, imaginative and creative to be recognized on the world stage.

Designer Interview

I have a background education in Architecture. However, along the way, I wanted to engage with projects that runs on a faster pace due to the nature of the competitive economy in Malaysia. I am thankful that with Architecture, I can be quite overall in a range of skills and think beyond running merely a design firm.

We are a young, aspiring and upcoming interior design firm with 15 staff members. We have in the previously years honed our skills in designing residential projects and in the past one year ventured into commercial projects to explore further and bigger ideas.

Kuala Lumpur. It is not exactly a design city. Hence we have to be smart in finding inspirations. However, it is a good place to explore and introduce design ideas as it is still growing.

Professionally and develop a long term working relationship.

Research into a designer's track record and contribution to the society.

We value all individuals' contributions within the company. The end products come out great if it is a joint effort. We spent hundred of hours envisioning a space and through trials and errors, only would the best outcomes appear.

Kitchen, Bath, Dining, Study, Play Room

Every day is different. It poses different challenges and lay stepping stones for each of us to progress through the days, weeks, months and years. Hence, progression never ceases.

Be bold, trust your instinct, be courteous and be humane to design, brief, collateral and others.

It is a lengthy, lifelong career. You have to find the "thing" that keeps you going. In return, you learn all other aspects that are required to be a good designer.
