Designer of the Day Interview

I have been working as a professional photographer for more than two decades, specializing in luxury resort, architectural, interior, landscape, and lifestyle photography in the Maldives. My journey began in 2002 after studying the fundamentals of photography with the Photographic Society of Singapore. What started as a passion quickly became a lifelong profession dedicated to creating images that inspire people to travel and experience extraordinary places.
Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with some of the world’s most respected hospitality brands, including Four Seasons, Gili Lankanfushi, Soneva, JW Marriott, Jumeirah Vittaveli, and several leading luxury resorts across the Maldives. Every project has taught me something new about light, design, and the importance of presenting a space in its most authentic and compelling form.
My work is driven by precision and attention to detail. Whether I am photographing an architectural masterpiece or a secluded beach villa, my goal is to create images that allow viewers to feel as though they are standing there themselves. Receiving recognition through the A’ Design Award has been a meaningful milestone and encourages me to continue pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling.

Photography entered my life through curiosity. My father bought a Sony camcorder when I was young, and I became fascinated by the idea of preserving moments and places. What began as a hobby gradually evolved into a profession as I realized photography could combine creativity with technical precision.
As I gained experience, I became increasingly interested in architectural and hospitality photography. I discovered that photographing luxury resorts was about much more than documenting buildings. It was about translating the vision of architects, interior designers, and resort developers into images that evoke emotion and inspire travel.
Throughout my career, I have invested significant time in learning lighting techniques, composition, and post-production. I continually study the work of respected photographers and refine my own methods. Every project becomes another opportunity to improve. Even after more than twenty years, I still approach each assignment with the mindset of a student who is eager to learn.

The three principles that guide every project are authenticity, light, and meticulous attention to detail.
Authenticity is always my highest priority. I believe photography should enhance reality rather than alter it. The Maldives is already one of the most beautiful places on Earth, so my goal is to present its natural colors, textures, and atmosphere as faithfully as possible while refining them with professional craftsmanship.
Lighting is equally important. For architectural interiors, I often use a flambient approach that combines ambient light with carefully controlled flash lighting. This allows me to balance bright tropical exteriors with interior spaces naturally, producing images that feel both realistic and inviting.
Finally, I pay close attention to every detail before pressing the shutter. From furniture alignment and curtain placement to reflections and composition, every small element contributes to the final image. I believe exceptional photography is created long before the camera captures the frame.

For me, every project begins with excitement and curiosity. Even after more than two decades in photography, I still look forward to discovering how light interacts with a space and how I can translate that experience into a compelling image.
The most rewarding moment is not necessarily taking the photograph, but seeing the final image come together exactly as I envisioned it. Knowing that the photograph will inspire someone to visit a destination or help a resort share its story gives my work a deeper sense of purpose.
Photography also teaches patience. Not every image happens immediately. Sometimes I wait for the right light, adjust small details repeatedly, or revisit a composition until everything feels balanced. When all those elements finally come together, there is a genuine sense of satisfaction that reminds me why I chose this profession.

My background has taught me that success comes from continuous learning and consistency rather than shortcuts. I started with a genuine passion for photography, but over the years I realized that technical knowledge alone is not enough. Patience, discipline, observation, and the willingness to improve every day have shaped me just as much as the camera itself.
Working with luxury resorts across the Maldives has also influenced my perspective. Every resort has its own architectural identity, atmosphere, and story, which has taught me to adapt my creative approach while maintaining a consistent standard of quality.
I have also been fortunate to learn from talented photographers whose work challenged me to think differently about lighting and composition. Instead of simply copying techniques, I focused on understanding why they worked and then developing my own style. That mindset of learning, adapting, and refining continues to shape my work today.

My goal is to continue growing as an architectural and hospitality photographer while expanding my work beyond the Maldives. Every destination has its own character, architecture, and quality of light, and I look forward to applying my experience in new environments around the world.
I also want to continue pushing the technical and creative boundaries of my work. Advances in imaging technology, aerial photography, and visual storytelling create exciting opportunities, but I believe technology should always support creativity rather than replace it.
My dream project would be to photograph some of the world’s most iconic luxury resorts, hotels, and architectural landmarks, creating a collection that celebrates exceptional design across different cultures. More importantly, I hope my work continues to inspire young photographers to pursue excellence, remain authentic, and never stop learning. If I can leave behind images that stand the test of time and encourage others to see beauty through a more thoughtful perspective, I will consider that my greatest achievement.

My first piece of advice is to be patient. In today’s world, many people expect success to happen quickly, but mastering any creative profession takes years of dedication. Focus on improving your skills rather than chasing recognition. Awards, clients, and opportunities will naturally follow quality work.
Secondly, never stop learning. Photography and design are constantly evolving, and there is always something new to discover. Study the work of experienced professionals, understand the principles behind their techniques, and then develop your own style instead of simply imitating others.
Finally, pay attention to the smallest details. A successful project is often defined by things that many people overlook. Whether it is the direction of light, the placement of furniture, or a subtle reflection, these details collectively create the difference between a good image and an exceptional one. Excellence is built through consistency in the little things.

One lesson I have learned throughout my career is that technical ability alone is not enough. Creativity, professionalism, and reliability are equally important. Clients remember not only the quality of your work but also your attitude, your preparation, and your ability to deliver consistently.
I also believe authenticity is becoming increasingly valuable. With powerful editing tools readily available, it can be tempting to over-process images or follow temporary trends. Instead, I encourage designers and artists to create work that remains timeless. A well-crafted design or photograph should still feel relevant and meaningful many years from now.
Most importantly, stay curious. Every project offers an opportunity to learn something new. The moment we believe we know everything is the moment we stop growing. Remaining humble and open to learning has been one of the greatest contributors to my own development.

No two days are exactly the same, which is one of the reasons I enjoy my profession. When I am on location, my mornings often begin before sunrise to take advantage of the best natural light. Before each shoot, I walk through the property, study how the light moves across the spaces, and carefully plan the sequence of photographs for the day.
A significant part of my work happens behind the scenes. Planning, coordinating with resort teams, reviewing compositions, organizing files, and refining images during post-production all require as much attention as the photography itself. I believe thorough preparation is one of the key reasons a shoot runs smoothly.
I also make time to continue learning. Whether it is exploring new techniques, following developments in photography, or studying inspiring architectural projects, I believe continuous improvement is essential. At the end of each day, I enjoy looking back at the images I’ve created, knowing that each project contributes another chapter to my journey as a photographer.

I believe it is important to stay informed about new trends, technologies, and creative ideas, but I do not let trends define my work. Trends come and go, while thoughtful design and timeless photography remain relevant for many years.
I regularly study the work of leading photographers, architects, and designers, not to imitate them, but to understand how they solve creative challenges. Inspiration can come from architecture, nature, travel, or even the changing quality of light throughout the day. Every experience has the potential to influence how I see a scene.
My goal has always been to create images that feel authentic rather than fashionable. When someone looks at one of my photographs ten years from now, I want it to feel just as compelling as it does today. That is why I focus on strong composition, natural light, and honest storytelling instead of following temporary trends.

To me, good design creates an emotional connection while fulfilling its purpose effortlessly. Whether it is a building, a product, or a photograph, it should feel intuitive, balanced, and meaningful rather than drawing attention to unnecessary complexity.
As a photographer, I pay close attention to how light interacts with architecture, how spaces flow naturally, and how every element contributes to the overall experience. The finest designs are often those where every detail has a reason for being there, yet nothing feels excessive.
I also believe that good design stands the test of time. It should continue to inspire people years after it is created. Trends may change, but timeless design continues to communicate beauty, function, and emotion regardless of the era.

Perfection is something every creative professional strives for, but I have learned that there comes a point when a project must be trusted and shared. I know my work is ready when every element supports the story I want to tell and there are no distractions that take away from the viewer’s experience.
Before I finish a project, I carefully review every image, often multiple times. I look for small details that others might overlook, such as alignment, reflections, lighting balance, or subtle distractions. These final refinements often make the biggest difference.
Even after completing a project, I continue to learn from it. Every assignment teaches me something that improves the next one. In that sense, I believe a designer never truly stops growing. Each finished project becomes a foundation for creating something even better in the future.

One of the projects I am most proud of is Bella Six at Madifushi Private Island, which received recognition at the A’ Design Award. What made this project particularly meaningful was not only the architecture itself, but the opportunity to present the villa in a way that allowed people to imagine themselves experiencing the space.
Instead of photographing the villa as an empty luxury property, I chose to tell a story by incorporating six women naturally interacting within the different spaces. This transformed the photographs from architectural documentation into visual storytelling, helping viewers connect emotionally with the experience the villa offers.
The project also presented significant technical challenges. Balancing the bright Maldivian sunlight with interior lighting required extensive planning and the use of flambient techniques to achieve a natural look. Every composition, every lighting decision, and every detail was carefully considered. Seeing the project recognized internationally was incredibly rewarding because it validated not only the final images but also the creative process behind them.

Rather than having a single favourite designer, I admire creative professionals who consistently pursue excellence and remain true to their vision. In photography, I have learned a great deal from Mike Kelley, whose mastery of architectural lighting and attention to detail have been a valuable source of inspiration throughout my career.
I also have great respect for architects and designers who create spaces that exist in harmony with nature. Working in the Maldives has given me a deep appreciation for designs that celebrate their surroundings instead of competing with them. The best architecture invites natural light, embraces the landscape, and creates experiences that feel timeless.
More than any individual, I admire people who continue to innovate while remaining humble enough to keep learning. That mindset inspires me every day and reminds me that growth never truly ends.

Living in the Maldives has had a profound influence on both my life and my photography. I am surrounded every day by turquoise lagoons, tropical vegetation, and ever-changing skies, and these natural elements constantly remind me that beauty often lies in simplicity. This environment has shaped my appreciation for authentic color, natural light, and thoughtful composition.
Outside of photography, I enjoy exploring new technologies, studying architecture, and continuously learning. I believe creativity grows through curiosity, and I try to remain open to new ideas while staying true to my own artistic values.
As someone who works in tourism, I feel fortunate to contribute to an industry that introduces people from around the world to the beauty of the Maldives. Through my photographs, I hope to create a lasting connection between people and the destinations they dream of visiting.

My business philosophy is built on professionalism, trust, and respect. Every project, regardless of its size, deserves the same level of commitment and attention to detail. I believe that consistency is one of the most valuable qualities a creative professional can offer.
Preparation is an essential part of my workflow. Before every shoot, I spend time understanding the project, planning compositions, and anticipating potential challenges. Good preparation allows creativity to flourish because it provides the confidence to focus on capturing exceptional images.
I also believe that successful collaborations are built on communication and mutual respect. Whether working with resort managers, architects, designers, or marketing teams, I value listening to different perspectives and working together toward a shared vision. The strongest results are achieved when everyone contributes their expertise with the same goal in mind.

Throughout my career, I have always been willing to guide aspiring photographers, share techniques, and offer advice based on my own experiences. I know how valuable encouragement can be when someone is just beginning their journey.
I also believe photography has an important role in promoting appreciation for nature and responsible tourism. By presenting destinations authentically and respectfully, we help people value and protect the environments they visit.
As my career continues to grow, I hope to become more involved in educational initiatives, workshops, and mentoring opportunities. If my experiences can inspire even a few young photographers to pursue excellence with integrity and passion, I will consider that a meaningful contribution.

Winning the A’ Design Award has been one of the most rewarding milestones of my career. Beyond the recognition itself, it has provided an opportunity to reflect on my creative journey and to share my work with an international audience that appreciates design excellence.
The award also encourages continuous improvement. Preparing a project for international evaluation requires careful thought, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate the ideas behind the work. That process alone has helped me grow both creatively and professionally.
Being considered for initiatives such as Designer of the Day is an honour because it celebrates not only a single project but also the philosophy and dedication behind years of work. I hope my story demonstrates that with passion, perseverance, and a commitment to quality, it is possible to transform a lifelong love of photography into a meaningful career. I am grateful to the A’ Design Award for creating a platform that connects designers and creators from around the world and inspires all of us to continue striving for excellence.

Design Legend Interview

My journey into photography began in 2001 when my father bought me a Sony camcorder. At first, it was simply a hobby fueled by my fascination with electronic gadgets and visual technology. As I spent more time behind the camera, I became increasingly interested in how light, composition, and perspective could transform ordinary scenes into meaningful images.
To build a solid foundation, I studied photography fundamentals at the Photographic Society of Singapore before beginning my professional career in 2002. Over the past twenty-four years, I have specialized in hospitality, architectural, interior, landscape, and travel photography. Throughout my career, I have remained committed to continuous learning, believing that every project presents an opportunity to refine my craft and raise my own standards.

My motivation comes from the ability to create an emotional connection through imagery. Photography allows me to preserve not only the appearance of a place but also its atmosphere and character. I enjoy the challenge of transforming a beautifully designed environment into a visual experience that makes viewers feel as though they are actually there.
I also enjoy solving technical challenges. Every location presents different lighting conditions, architectural elements, and perspectives. Finding the best way to overcome those challenges while maintaining authenticity is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work.

It was entirely my own choice. What began as a personal passion gradually became my profession. I never viewed photography simply as a job; it has always been something I genuinely enjoy doing.
I was fortunate to have a family that encouraged my interests. My father supported my passion from the very beginning, and that support gave me the confidence to pursue photography professionally. Looking back, I cannot imagine choosing a different career.

My work focuses primarily on hospitality, architectural, interior, landscape, aerial, and travel photography. I enjoy projects that combine technical precision with storytelling, where the design of a space and the experience of being there are equally important.
Looking ahead, I would like to work on more international hospitality projects in different countries and environments. Every destination presents unique architectural styles, cultures, and lighting conditions, and I believe those experiences would continue to expand my creative perspective.

The most important advice I can give is to never stop learning. Technology evolves, trends change, and creative industries continue to develop, but a commitment to improvement should remain constant.
Pay attention to the smallest details because they often determine the overall quality of a project. Learn from experienced professionals, accept constructive criticism, and be patient with your progress. Success rarely happens overnight. It is built through consistency, dedication, and a genuine passion for your craft.
Most importantly, create work that reflects your own vision rather than trying to imitate someone else’s style.

Technical skill is essential, but I believe what truly distinguishes a great designer is attention to detail and a commitment to excellence. Great designers are never satisfied with simply completing a project—they continue refining their work until every element contributes to the overall experience.
Humility is equally important. No matter how much experience you gain, there is always something new to learn. Remaining curious and open to improvement allows a designer to continue growing throughout their career.

For me, good design successfully communicates its purpose while creating an emotional response. In photography, that means more than producing an attractive image. A successful photograph should make the viewer feel connected to the space and understand its atmosphere.
When I evaluate my own work, I pay close attention to lighting, composition, color balance, and detail. If all of those elements work together naturally and the image creates a genuine feeling of being there, then I know the design has achieved its purpose.
When I evaluate my own work, I pay close attention to lighting, composition, color balance, and detail. If all of those elements work together naturally and the image creates a genuine feeling of being there, then I know the design has achieved its purpose.
Good design creates lasting value because it combines functionality, beauty, and purpose. In photography, good design is not only about creating visually appealing images but also about communicating a story and leaving a lasting impression. Investing in good design strengthens a brand, builds trust, and creates memorable experiences that people connect with emotionally. Whether it is architecture, hospitality, or photography, thoughtful design continues to deliver value long after the project is completed, making it one of the best long-term investments.
Given the opportunity, I would love to photograph extraordinary architecture and luxury hospitality projects around the world. Every country presents different lighting conditions, cultures, and architectural styles, offering new creative challenges and opportunities to grow as a photographer. I would enjoy collaborating with visionary architects, interior designers, and luxury hospitality brands that value storytelling through visual imagery. My goal would be to create photographs that not only document beautiful spaces but also allow people to experience the atmosphere and emotion of each destination.
One of my biggest ambitions is to create a global photographic collection featuring some of the world’s most remarkable luxury resorts and architectural masterpieces. I would like to travel across different continents, documenting how architecture, culture, and natural light come together to create unique experiences. Every location presents new creative challenges, especially in mastering different lighting environments. I hope this project will not only showcase exceptional design but also inspire future photographers to see light as the most powerful element in visual storytelling.
I believe there is no single secret to success, but there are principles that have guided me throughout my career. Consistency, patience, and an unwavering commitment to quality have been my foundation. I have always believed that every project deserves my very best, regardless of its scale. Awards and recognition are meaningful milestones, but they have never been my primary motivation. What drives me is the desire to improve with every assignment. Even after twenty-four years, I continue to study new techniques, refine my workflow, and challenge myself creatively. For me, success is the result of countless small improvements accumulated over time.
I believe every designer and photographer has something valuable to offer, and I enjoy learning from many different creative professionals rather than following a single individual. If I were to mention one person who had a significant influence on my technical development, it would be Mike Kelley. Through his educational content, I gained a deeper understanding of architectural photography and lighting techniques. Beyond that, I am inspired by anyone who demonstrates passion, discipline, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. I believe inspiration can come from observing great work, regardless of the person behind it.
My favourite project is Bella Six, created for Madifushi Private Island in the Maldives. It represents a significant milestone in my career because it reflects years of refining my lighting techniques and developing a style that combines architectural photography with lifestyle storytelling.
Rather than simply documenting the villa, I wanted to capture the experience of staying there. By introducing six women into the narrative, the photographs became more than images of architecture—they became stories of celebration, friendship, relaxation, and connection. Receiving international recognition for the project was deeply rewarding because it acknowledged not only the final images but also the dedication and craftsmanship behind them.

I consider Bella Six to be my greatest work to date because it challenged me creatively, technically, and artistically. Achieving the natural balance between interior and exterior lighting required extensive planning, precise execution, and meticulous post-production. Hospitality photography in the Maldives presents unique challenges due to the extreme contrast between the bright tropical environment and interior spaces.
Every photograph was carefully planned from lighting and composition to the placement of every object within the frame. My goal was to create images that appeared effortless while reflecting the atmosphere exactly as guests would experience it. The project represents years of continuous learning and remains one of the most fulfilling achievements of my career.

Never stop learning. That is the advice I would give anyone entering a creative profession. Early in my career, I invested time in studying photography fundamentals, but learning did not end there. Every project, every client, and every challenge became an opportunity to improve.
I also believe it is important to study your own work critically. Rather than focusing only on what went well, I always ask myself what could have been done better. That mindset has helped me grow continuously over the past two decades and remains an important part of my creative process today.

Photography has been such an important part of my life that it is difficult to imagine choosing another path. However, I have always been fascinated by technology and electronic devices, even before photography became my profession. I believe I would have pursued a career in a field that combined technology with creativity, where I could continue solving problems and creating meaningful experiences.
To me, design is the thoughtful combination of creativity, purpose, and communication. Good design should not only be visually appealing but should also evoke emotion and create a meaningful experience.
In photography, design extends beyond composition. It includes the quality of light, the relationship between colors, the balance of the frame, and the emotions conveyed through the final image. When these elements come together naturally, the result becomes more than a photograph, it becomes an experience.

I have been fortunate to receive unwavering support from my family throughout my journey, especially from my father and my uncle, Saleembe (Hakatha)
My father always believed in my passion for photography. He encouraged me from the very beginning, investing in the equipment I needed and giving me the freedom to pursue a career that I truly loved. His confidence in me provided the foundation upon which I built my profession.
My uncle supported me in a different but equally meaningful way. During the early years of my career, when I had very little professional work, he would ask me to photograph the flowers in his garden, purchase the framed prints, and proudly display them in his home. Those simple gestures gave me confidence at a time when I was still discovering my path. Looking back, I realize that his encouragement helped transform a hobby into a lifelong profession.

Experience has certainly played an important role, but I believe curiosity has been even more valuable. I have never allowed myself to become complacent. Every project presents a new opportunity to learn something about light, composition, storytelling, or technique.
I also believe that paying attention to details has shaped my work. A great photograph is rarely defined by one major decision; it is usually the result of hundreds of small decisions made with care. Those details are what elevate a good image into one that leaves a lasting impression.

Like many creative professionals, I faced the challenge of building both experience and confidence. In the beginning, every assignment was a learning opportunity, and every mistake became part of my education.
One of the greatest technical challenges has been mastering light. Photographing luxury resorts in the Maldives is far more demanding than many people realize. The intense tropical sunlight creates a dramatic contrast between bright exteriors and darker interiors. Learning how to balance those extremes naturally took years of experimentation and refinement. Looking back, I realize those challenges shaped not only my technical skills but also my patience and perseverance.

Design should be presented as a complete story rather than a collection of finished images. Every project has a purpose, a process, and challenges that shape the final result. I believe designers should share not only the outcome but also the thinking behind it. When people understand the ideas, research, and craftsmanship involved, they develop a deeper appreciation for the work. Good presentation allows the audience to connect emotionally with the project and understand the designer’s vision.
I hope to continue expanding my work beyond the Maldives by photographing luxury hospitality and architectural projects in different parts of the world. Every destination offers unique lighting conditions, cultures, and design philosophies that inspire new ways of seeing. At the same time, I will continue refining my techniques and exploring new approaches to visual storytelling. My goal is that each new project represents growth over the previous one.
My ultimate goal is to create photographs that remain timeless. Awards and recognition are meaningful, but what matters most is producing work that continues to inspire people many years after it was created. I also hope to contribute to the next generation of photographers by sharing my knowledge and encouraging others to pursue excellence in their own creative journeys.
I believe people expect consistency, integrity, and professionalism. They trust that every project will receive the same level of care regardless of its size. Clients also expect creativity, reliability, and solutions to technical challenges. I believe it is my responsibility to exceed those expectations while remaining true to my own artistic values.
Design improves the way people experience the world. It communicates ideas, preserves culture, inspires creativity, and helps people appreciate beauty in everyday life. In hospitality photography, authentic imagery allows people to experience destinations before they visit while encouraging appreciation for architecture, craftsmanship, and the natural environment. Good design creates emotional connections that extend beyond aesthetics.
I am currently continuing my work within the luxury hospitality industry, where I am constantly refining my approach to lighting and visual storytelling. Every new project presents an opportunity to improve my craft. I am particularly excited about exploring new destinations and collaborating with clients who value authenticity, detail, and exceptional visual presentation.
The project that has given me the greatest satisfaction is photography coverage of Madifushi Private Island. It represents years of research, experimentation, and refinement in balancing natural and artificial light. More importantly, it allowed me to move beyond documenting architecture and instead create photographs that communicate the experience of staying in the villa. Seeing that work receive international recognition was especially meaningful because it reflected years of dedication to mastering my craft.
I would like to see greater emphasis placed on authenticity. In today’s digital world, it is easy to manipulate images to create unrealistic expectations. I believe designers and photographers have a responsibility to present spaces honestly while still highlighting their beauty. Authentic storytelling builds trust and creates stronger connections between people and the places they experience.
Technology and artificial intelligence will continue transforming the creative industry, making many processes faster and more efficient. However, I believe creativity, human emotion, and artistic vision will always remain essential. Technology should enhance creativity rather than replace it. The future belongs to designers who combine technical innovation with genuine human storytelling.

The future belongs to designers who combine technical innovation with genuine human storytelling. I believe photography should enhance reality, not replace it.
Every successful project begins with understanding its purpose. Before picking up my camera, I spend time researching the property, studying its architecture, and understanding what makes it unique. I also evaluate the direction of natural light throughout the day and carefully plan each composition before the shoot begins. Good photography is rarely spontaneous. Careful preparation allows creativity to flow naturally when I am on location.
I believe excellence is found in the details. No matter how large or small the project may be, every element deserves the same level of attention and care. My goal is not simply to finish a project but to produce work that I can look back on with pride. Every assignment is an opportunity to improve upon the one before it.
I believe truly great design creates trends rather than follows them. While it is important to remain aware of industry developments, I think lasting work is created by designers who remain authentic to their own vision. Trends come and go, but thoughtful design and genuine craftsmanship remain timeless.
Technology is an important tool, but it should never replace creativity. Advances in camera equipment, lighting, software, and artificial intelligence have made many aspects of photography more efficient, allowing photographers to focus more on storytelling and refinement. However, no technology can replace the human ability to observe light, understand emotion, and create meaningful visual experiences. I see technology as a partner in the creative process, not its substitute.
My workflow combines professional camera equipment with carefully selected post-production tools. I primarily use Nikon camera systems (Nikon Z9), professional lenses, studio lighting when required, and aerial imaging technology for drone (DJI Inspire 3) photography. My post-production workflow is centered around Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop, where I refine color, contrast, and detail while preserving the natural atmosphere of each scene. Every tool I use serves one purpose—to enhance the viewer’s experience while maintaining authenticity.
Color, materials, and ambience work together to create emotion. Beautiful architecture alone cannot communicate the feeling of a space unless these elements are captured thoughtfully. In photography, I pay close attention to how natural light interacts with textures, materials, and colors throughout the day. My objective is to preserve the atmosphere exactly as it is experienced, allowing viewers to imagine themselves within the environment rather than simply observing it.
Rather than asking what camera or software I use, I hope people ask why I chose a particular composition or how I used light to tell the story of a space. Those conversations reveal the creative thinking behind the photograph. Technical equipment is important, but the decisions made behind the camera are what truly define the final image.
My first thought is always, “What inspired this?” I enjoy understanding the creative decisions behind a project rather than simply admiring the finished result. I pay attention to the details, the craftsmanship, and the way the design makes people feel. Great design always has a purpose, and discovering that purpose is something I find inspiring.
I enjoy collaborating with people who share a passion for quality, attention to detail, and continuous improvement. The best creative partnerships are built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to excellence. While much of my work is completed independently, I believe collaboration often produces stronger ideas because different perspectives encourage creative growth.
Without question, my father and my uncle had the greatest influence on my journey. My father encouraged my passion from the very beginning, supporting my interest in photography and giving me the confidence to pursue it professionally. My uncle, Saleembe (Hakatha), believed in my work long before I had established my career. His encouragement and belief in my potential gave me confidence during the early years when I needed it most.
Throughout my career, I have also learned from fellow photographers, mentors, clients, and every project I have undertaken. Every interaction has contributed to my growth, reminding me that learning never truly ends.
People often ask me what camera I use. I hope one day they ask me what I saw. Cameras capture light. Photographers give it meaning.

Rather than being influenced by a single book, I have learned through a combination of educational resources, practical experience, and observing the work of respected photographers. I believe some of the greatest lessons come from studying real projects, understanding why certain images work, and continually evaluating my own work. Learning is an ongoing process, and I remain open to inspiration from books, tutorials, exhibitions, and the creative work of others.
My skills have been developed through more than two decades of practical experience, continuous learning, and a commitment to improving every project I undertake. I have always believed that experience alone is not enough; it must be combined with curiosity and self-evaluation. I constantly study light, experiment with new techniques, and analyze my own work to identify opportunities for improvement. Every assignment teaches me something new, and that mindset has allowed me to continue growing throughout my career.
I would enjoy meeting photographers and creative thinkers who have changed the way people see the world. Someone like Ansel Adams would be fascinating because of his extraordinary understanding of light, composition, and patience. I would also enjoy speaking with contemporary architectural photographers such as Mike Kelley to discuss how technology has changed our profession while exploring how authenticity can still remain at the heart of photography. Conversations like these remind us that learning never truly ends.
Receiving awards is both an honour and a responsibility. Recognition provides encouragement and confirms that years of dedication have been appreciated by others, but it also motivates me to continue improving. I do not see awards as the destination of my career; I see them as milestones that encourage me to raise my own standards. I remain focused on the work itself because lasting satisfaction comes from creating meaningful photographs rather than collecting recognition.

Photography often teaches patience and adaptability. One memorable lesson came during a hospitality shoot when everything had been carefully planned, only for the weather to change unexpectedly. Rather than becoming frustrated, I learned to embrace the situation and adapt my approach. Some of my favourite photographs have come from moments that were never part of the original plan. Experiences like these remind me that creativity often begins where certainty ends.
The most rewarding part of my day is seeing an image come together exactly as I imagined it—or sometimes even better. Solving challenging lighting situations and knowing that I have created something that communicates emotion gives me great satisfaction. I stay motivated by reminding myself that every project is another opportunity to improve. Even after twenty-four years, I approach each assignment with the excitement of learning something new.
No, it was not obvious. As a child, I was simply fascinated by technology and electronic gadgets. Photography entered my life when my father bought me a Sony camcorder in 2001, and what began as curiosity gradually developed into a lifelong passion. Looking back, I realize that small moment changed the direction of my life in ways I could never have imagined.
While it is impossible to predict the distant future, I believe creativity will remain one of humanity’s defining qualities. Technology will continue to evolve, perhaps in ways we cannot yet imagine, but people will always seek stories, emotions, and meaningful experiences. As long as creativity exists, design and photography will continue to inspire, educate, and connect people across cultures and generations.
I would like people to know that every photograph I create represents far more than the moment the shutter is pressed. Behind each image are years of learning, careful planning, technical precision, and a genuine passion for excellence. I remain grateful to my family my Mom, Ahamdhey for giving me the emotional support; my mentors, my clients, and everyone who has supported my journey.
Most importantly, I hope my work encourages people to look beyond the surface of an image. Photography is not only about documenting a place—it is about creating a connection between people and spaces through light, emotion, and storytelling.
I believe the pursuit of excellence never truly ends, and I look forward to continuing that journey for many years to come.

Designer Interview
24 June 2026
My journey into photography began in 2001 when my father bought me a Sony camcorder. What started as a fascination with technology quickly developed into a passion for visual storytelling. I was particularly intrigued by how professional photographers used composition, perspective, and light to create powerful images. To build a strong foundation, I studied photography basics at the Photographic Society of Singapore before beginning my professional career in 2002. Over the past 24 years, I have specialized in architectural, interior, hospitality, landscape, and travel photography, continually refining my craft and pursuing excellence in every project.
I am a professional photographer specializing in architectural, interior, hospitality, lifestyle, landscape, and travel photography. My work focuses on creating visually compelling images that help clients communicate the unique character of their spaces and destinations. Throughout my career, I have collaborated with luxury resorts, hospitality brands, and tourism organizations, producing imagery that combines technical precision with storytelling.
For me, design is the intentional arrangement of elements to create meaning, emotion, and experience. In photography, design is expressed through composition, lighting, color, perspective, and timing. Every decision contributes to how a viewer experiences an image. A successful design is one that not only looks beautiful but also communicates a clear message and creates an emotional connection.
I am most passionate about architectural, interior, hospitality, aerial, and travel photography. These fields allow me to combine technical precision with creativity and storytelling. I particularly enjoy hospitality photography because it involves capturing not only the design of a space but also the experience and atmosphere it offers. My goal is always to create images that make viewers feel as though they are actually there.
My favorite project is Bella Six, an award-winning photography project created for Madifushi Private Island in the Maldives. The project documents the resort’s signature villa while combining architectural photography with lifestyle storytelling. Rather than photographing the villa as an empty space, I introduced six women into the narrative to showcase celebration, connection, and relaxation. What makes this project special to me is that it represents the culmination of years spent refining my lighting techniques and light blending workflow. The project was honored with a Bronze A’ Design Award and remains one of my most satisfying creative achievements.

Research, Planning and actualizing the projects in a timeframe.
Have to focus on location, decide the best time for shooting and of course the technical side of it, mainly the camera settings, image focus, lighting etc. basically the whole project when I’m freelancing.

Excited, at the same time cautious.
It’s a good feeling to deliver projects as it benefits individuals, companies and organizations.
Passion, determination and planning will make designs successful.
Aspects that I would consider are, the purpose of the design, does it serve the main purpose, does it give the right message, creativity and quality and ease of use.
Technology and artificial intelligence are transforming the design industry, making tools more accessible and efficient. However, creativity, storytelling, and human perspective will remain irreplaceable. I believe the future of design will combine advanced technology with authentic human creativity, resulting in more personalized and immersive experiences.
My inspiration comes from travel, architecture, nature, and the unique characteristics of each location I photograph. I also learn from observing how people interact with spaces. Continuous learning, experimentation, and studying the work of other professionals help me stay creative and develop new ideas.
My style focuses on enhancing reality while preserving authenticity. I pay close attention to lighting, composition, color, and detail to create images that feel natural yet refined. My goal is to create a feeling of being there, allowing viewers to experience the atmosphere and emotion of a place through photography.
I begin by understanding the client’s objectives, target audience, and brand identity. Research and planning are essential before any photography session. Throughout the project I maintain close communication with the client to ensure the final images not only meet expectations but also effectively communicate the desired message.
Every project begins with research and planning. I study the location, identify key selling points, analyze lighting conditions, and prepare a detailed shot list. During the shoot, I focus on composition, lighting, and storytelling. The final stage is post-production, where I carefully refine each image while maintaining a natural and authentic appearance.
No two days are exactly the same. Some days are spent photographing resorts, interiors, or landscapes, while others are dedicated to post-production and planning future projects. Regardless of the task, I spend a significant amount of time refining details because I believe excellence lives in the details.
Work with passion, determination and discipline. Never give up. Believe in yourself and work hard.
One of the greatest positives is the opportunity to create meaningful work and continuously learn. It is rewarding to see ideas come to life and have an impact on people and businesses. The challenges include managing deadlines, adapting to changing technology, and maintaining consistently high standards, but these challenges also contribute to personal and professional growth.
Perfect it, don’t leave any flaws in the design.
As a photographer, one needs to know all about the functions of the camera, editing software, communicating with clients, and, most importantly, know the product you are shooting.

It depends on the scope of work.
One of the questions I am asked most often is how I achieve natural-looking lighting in my photographs. Many people assume the images are heavily edited, but much of the result comes from careful planning, lighting techniques, and attention to detail during the shoot itself.

I enjoy architectural, interior, and hospitality photography the most because it combines technical precision with storytelling. I enjoy the challenge of capturing a space in a way that communicates both its design and the experience of being there.
I plan to continue pushing the boundaries of hospitality and architectural photography while pursuing projects in new countries and environments. I enjoy challenging myself creatively, and I hope to continue producing work that receives international recognition while helping clients tell their stories through powerful imagery.
Most of the time I work alone as a freelancer, but I do work as a team when required.
I am currently exploring new approaches to hospitality photography that further blend architectural documentation with storytelling. I am particularly interested in creating immersive visual narratives that help viewers connect emotionally with a destination and imagine themselves within the experience.
