Designer of the Day Interview

31 March 2019

I have been designing jewelry for three years. Before that I use to sell diamonds. I wanted to start designing because I always admired designers in my previous company but I never had any experience designing. One day of friend of mine pushed to me to give designing a try and I did. After that I decided to start jewelry designing full time.

I became a designer after a friend suggested I give it a try.

When I design something, my priorities usually revolve around the gemstone. Because usually when you look at a gemstone it is plain. But when you combine it with a pendant or other pieces of jewelry, it becomes something more. I like the idea of changing something and making it totally different.

I feel satisfied when I am designing a new piece of jewelry and a great sense of understanding overcomes me after spending many hours working on it.

My father was instrumental in me learning to love gemstones and jewelry. Whenever he came back from overseas, he would often bring these things to me because he felt that i deserved them. This early exposure to jewelry made me become what I am today.

Well at the moment I am still trying to expand my jewelry business. I hope to do that with more public exposure. My dream design project would be a beautiful pendant using the best materials available.

My advice to young designers is to follow their heart as cliche as that sounds. Try and don't give up. Trust yourself.

As a successful designer, I would suggest you look at your customers needs from a different perspective. This new perspective will help boost your own morale as well as those you work with.

I usually start my day by looking at my phone to keep up to date on jewelry design news as well as my fellow jewelry designers. At the end of the day, I always exercise to wind down from a stressful day. When I get the chance, I love to relax and play the piano.

I keep up with the latest design trends using Pinterest, surfing the web and magazines. New design trends matter a lot because they reflect the changes in the industry during the year. When you look back at previous years, it helps understand where design is going in the future.

If you wear the piece of jewelry, it should be comfortable. Beyond that you can't really say what is good design because everyone likes something different. I think most jewelry has their own special design.

During the design process, most people often check while they are sketching or drawing. During this checking, some instinct inside of you will tell you when your design is ready.

My biggest design work to date has to be the one I submitted for this competition.

My favorite designer is Cindy Chao because she designs emphasize nature.

I am from the ethnic minority in Taiwan known as Hakka. It is my culture and also my language. It is Reflected in my designs and my life. My lifestyle is comfortable and revolves around work, family and friends.

My business philosophy is to help my employees achieve their goals. I also want my company to adapt well to new things. No matter the industry, I think adaptation is necessary.

As a designer, I hope to influence people through art and give back to society that way.

This will be my first experience attending the A Design competition so any positive experience would be most helpful.

Design Legend Interview

21 May 2019

I don't have much of a design background. I am a self-taught jewelry designer because previously I used to sell jewelry at the retail level.

I became a designer because a few years ago because my friend told me that I should change my path. She encouraged me to design my own jewelry because I liked to paint. I was motivated to make a change because I have the possibility to actually make the change.

I chose to become a designer.

I only design jewelry and in the future I hope I can design more rings in the future.

They should do what they want but you also need to study hard.

The difference is that a great designer can touch your heart because of their designs. When other people see those designs, they will feel happy.

Looking at that design from a different perspective usually changes a good design to a really good design.

Everyone should invest in good design because it demonstrates your passion for the the industry. The value is in the personal gratification you get when customers get what they want.

I would like to design a piece of jewelry that could also be considered art. That is my dream project that I hope to realize in the future.

My secret when I am designing something is to just be relaxed.

One of that great design legends that inspires me is Cindy Chou.

I like Cindy Chou's designs because they are very close to nature and that is something very important to me.

I don't know have a greatest design yet because I am still relatively young in the jewelry design industry.

One of the best ways to improve themselves is to learn more and understand more about the various brands of jewelry.

If I hadn't become a jewelry designer, I would have become a clothing designer.

I think design is defined by the immediate thought when given a new project by a customer.

I didn't really have the biggest supporter but almost all my customers helped me to achieve my current level of success.

The properties of gemstones have helped me to become a great designer. Just looking at a stone helps me to think how to change them.

One of the obstacles is realizing my design because the master craftsman's impression of my design can sometimes be different from what I expect. Also sometimes customers don't like my impression of their design.

I think designers should present their work in an honest and clear fashion. They should do their best to translate their inspiration to a real design.

My next project is going to be a decorative ring.

My ultimate goal is for more people to do what they want to do.

My customers expect my design ability and designs to become more international.

Design helps create a better society by encouraging people to pursue what they want to do in life.

I am currently working on a project involving pearls. It is an old-style necklace that I hope to modernize.

My current project involving the pearl necklace has given me the most satisfaction because it reminds me of music.

I hope the jewelry industry can change expand and be more accessible to people.

I think as far as the jewelry industry is concerned. There will be a less of a focus on big retail jewelry and more on a personalized experience.

It usually takes me about 1 month to finish a design but the time period depends on the complexity of the project.

When I have a new project, I will first look at the stone for inspiration and then from work from there.

My life motto is that if you are ready, good things will come to you.

I believes that trends set the designs.

I believe in the case of the jewelry industry, 3d has had an important impact on the way I design.

I don't use any special software to design because I prefer the traditional methods of sketching.

These things help you to feel that the details are more delicate.

I wish they could ask me where I got my inspiration from? I also wish they could ask me what my gut feeling was

When I see a new great design, my first thought is usually amazement.

Yes, I believe in co-design. I think one of my customers would be an ideal design partner.

I think Cindy Chou most influenced my design.

Not so much books but quite a few magazines have influenced my design.

I developed my skills through lots of practice.

If I could meet someone regardless of time, I would love to talk to my dad again because he recently passed away.

The A'Design competition is the first one I have entered so I would hardly call myself famous.

My favorite color is white. My favorite place is Meinong. My favorite food is rice. My favorite season is winter. My favorite thing is something my father gave me. My favorite brand is Cartier.

A funny experience as a designer was when I designing a pearl necklace but when I finished it looked like an eggplant.

I motivate myself by having a desire to help more people.

Yes, it was obvious I would become a designer.

I think in the future people will do more of what they like.

I hope people can know that I will designer better and improve more.
