Design Legend Interview

13 September 2026

I started to draw at a very young age, around four or five years old, drawing, freehand, is still something truly amazing to me... So I have always known that I would follow something related. It wasn't until secondary school that I found Design. Entering the Technological Communication Design Curse, in the 10th grade, was the turning point where passion met structure. That foundation led to a higher education at the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo (IPVC), where I spent five incredible years studying Landscape Design, one of my favorite fields of study, nowadays Ambient Design. That specific path profoundly shaped how I approach Design. Studying landscape and environmental systems taught me to view the process not as static geometry, but as a living, interconnected flow, the very same drive that motivates my work to this day.

What motivates me to design is the raw, undeniable pleasure of creating something new, enticing, the excitement of stepping into the unknown, learning, discovering new horizons, lifting the veil... It grew from my lifelong love for drawing, and a reverence for nature as the perfect system, eventually crystallizing into Concept Design. To me, the creative journey represents the continuity of the cycle, observing the brilliant logic of the natural world, taking the intangible energy of imagination, and shaping it into our own.

Yes... In fact I was "forced" to become one... Don´t get me wrong, I love what I do, we just don't really "choose" which "things" to fall in love with. It´s simply the natural flow. When it calls to you at such an early age, it ceases to be a calculus, you don't decide to see the world through such lens, you simply observe it that way. Design just becomes the natural language to translate those observations. So in that sense, that calling chose me long before I chose it.

It took me a while to find my place in the Design world, i started Drawing as a search for something, eventually it led me to enter Design. From Graphic to Ambient, Product and related fields of study like Aesthetics or Engendering, each one a world of their own, and all of which comprehending truly Impressive fields of study. Eventually I came to the realization that to me the most important part of the design process is Conceptualization. To bridge the horizon into the world of dreams, weaving them into concepts, to translate core narratives into sensible, compelling visual products. And so it took form as Concept Design. Today, my work crosses various fields, from integrated product design, high-efficiency technical systems and bio-inspired concepts, where bio logic and mechanical engineering dissolve into a single, seamless function. Looking ahead, I want to explore more of these progressive systems, large-scale ecological architectures, bio-integrated mobility platforms, and complex symbiotic landscapes where human intent, technological precision, and natural environments integrate seamlessly.

In my secondary school, i had a theory of Design teacher called Odete, an Old Lady that never married, Design to her was her kid, one of the best advice she spoke about was, to not allow one self to be used by the very tools one uses, she wasn't referring to AI´s... To me personally, perhaps the biggest one would be Dedication, not just to Design but to all inherent disciplines. The creative process as it exists today is extraordinarily demanding, the level of knowledge, technical rigor, and system logic required to create meaningful Product is without precedent. As a Designer one of the most important questions that one should ask himself is simply... What is to create?

A good designer crafts functional, visually compelling Product, a great designer creates a lasting, positive impact on society, one that inspires genuine social recognition. A design is truly successful when it seamlessly integrates into people's daily lives, quietly elevating their lived experience and dissolving the boundary between the individual and their environment. When society recognizes, embraces, and thrives because of a new idea or a forward-thinking concept, that organic social acceptance becomes the ultimate validation. It proves the work is not merely a "design," but a successful, purposeful contribution to our collective future.

Does it make you smile... ;) Leaving the technicalities apart, the ergonomics, the engineering, efficiency... I look for that immediate, instinctive human reaction. Good Design should trigger that "spark," arouse that inherent curiosity in us, that inner Kid. When a concept cuts through that noise and brings out a smile, a genuine emotional connection has been made, the technical perfection can and must follow, but that initial stimulus is what, to me, separates a truly great Design from the rest.

One needs to look at Design from a broader perspective. I usually say that Architects build homes, Engineers bridges and Designers, everything else. One of the earliest, best examples that I had of what was considered to be, truly responsible Design has... There I was all eager to study the "flashing" case studies and had to endure a whole two hours of chocolate talk. A father goes to a supermarket with his kid, and as usual the kid asks for a candy, the father searches for one with the required level of quality, but is not able to find it. Being that he is a Super Designer, gets home and starts to… "work it out." The end result was... Muesli, to this day one of the best, most responsible products that ever emerged from Design creativity. That inapt ability to pierce true the social fabric and see what needs to change... To be improved, or simply created anew, is the very condition that empowers Design to be the primary tool for social elevation, the very one that will eventually lead our societies to establish the so necessary balance with our own natural world.

As a Concept Designer, I have the privilege of choosing which projects to bring to life, this is easily one of the best traits in the field. Many of my upcoming concepts, already in the pipeline, reflect this creative freedom. One of them is NIA, an electric propulsion study exploring real-time atmospheric regeneration through human and AGI integration, within a high-performance motorcycle framework envisioned as a concept study for Aprilia. Another, much broader long-term vision is SYMBIOME, an autonomous, hybrid infrastructure, designed to restore ecological balance through the integration of living, bioengineered biological matrices, such as mycelial networks and cyanobacteria directly into the natural environment. It is engineered to actively repair soil, stabilize local hydrologies, and regenerate surrounding biomes. Ultimately, I would design for future generations and future generations ecosystems, creating bio-integrated architectures and mobility platforms that actively balance the environments they inhabit.

Concept design, in large part, starts in the realm of concept art, originated in Disney Animation Studios in the late 1930s and swiftly adopted by NASA not long after. It created a completely new form of art, one that paints future landscapes, translating complex scientific ambition into tangible visual reality. This concept is to take form in UNITY, a dream that embodies some of the most impressive visions to ever emerge from human space exploration. A Circle shaped structure, symbolizing the core reason why the cosmos is our ultimate path forward, the imperative, the unifying of us. By integrating relativistic physics with bioengineering mechanics, UNITY is envisioned as a self-sustaining habitat capable of expanding the horizon of deep-space transit, while serving as a beacon for unified Social Engineering. At its core the architecture utilizes a ITER based Direct Fusion Drive particle accelerator, creating a continuous electromagnetic and gravitational vector, actively harvesting particles in its medium, compressing them through an inner intake ring to fuel its sustained fusion reaction. Inside its rotating ring, an Hybrid AGI manages artificial gravity and bio-engineered ecosystems, working in complete homeostasis, sustaining crew life independently over multi-generational journeys. UNITY stands as the ultimate synthesis of our intent, a living platform built to carry human civilization into the interstellar age.

First and foremost, understanding the very condition in what our world exists in, acknowledge it as thoroughly as possible, both the problems created by the progressing world as the solutions being developed and implemented by the technological one. Taking the time to watch specific subject orientated documentaries, regularly conducting specific research, either using AI or good old fashion image bronzing... ;) In fields as diverse as Design, Engineering's, Concept Art, one of my favorites, Science... This cross-disciplinary study serves an essential purpose, to gather the required medium that facilitates informed decisions, impacting society in a positive, meaningful way.

At the very Core, nature and all its wonders... My inspiration spans generations of visionaries who refused to separate function from art. Leonardo, the provenance, the Renaissance of nature observation cleansed into science and engineering. That mechanical lineage balanced by the revolution of the Bauhaus movement, alongside Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright, who completely redefined how form, function, and human scale dictate organic integration, especially in Wright’s Fallingwater and its surrounding environment. Deeply inspired by the Porsche dynasty and their relentless pursuit for perfection. From Ferdinand Porsche's foundational work on the Beetle, to Ferry Porsche defiance with the 356, to Ferdinand Alexander "Butzi" and the immortal, timeless silhouette of the 911. The structural rigor balanced by the dynamic, fluid engineering of Santiago Calatrava. The visionary dynamism of Zaha Hadid, shattering traditional geometry to create seamless, parametric expressions. Each one of these, true masters, share a common thread, they didn't just create Form, they reshaped the cognitive vocabulary of their epochs.

When I look at designs that inspire me, I look for transformative, medium into purpose. Michelangelo's Pietà, beyond the mastery of turning cold Carrara into living human drapery, a most profound meaning in "Pietà´s" continuity, shaping us to this day. NASA's Eagle, Apollo Program Lunar Module, representing what is perhaps humanity's greatest achievement in systems engineering. Every single valve, computer code, launch trajectory had to be designed from a blank slate to operation condition in the absolute zero of space. This being the small purpose… In contemporary design, Neri Oxman’s Aguahoja, it stands as a true masterpiece of bio-integrated design, utilizing nature’s most abundant water-based biopolymers, it presents a viable, closed-loop solution to single-use plastics, most beautifully shaped into a cocoon… Symbolizing rebirth. These works span vastly different eras and disciplines, representing how human intent, when aligned toward a singular purpose, forms the impossible into tangible.

Those far Alisiu... A friend that brings you closer to the oceans... The underlying idea of seamless integration. Drawing inspiration from Portuguese naval heritage, every curve and structural element exists to dissolve the barrier between the vessel, the individual, and the oceans. Alisiu is a study, a dissertation on a new lifestyle, with the advent of global warming and the growing necessity for new alternatives, comes a new understanding on how we interact with habitable space, in other words, a new perspective on what we call home. In the present era, our relation with our own environment is undergoing considerable change, now more than ever words like, sustainability, privacy, mobility, assume a much more center role in our everyday lives, the growing necessary for peace of mind, for stability, is the very reason why Alisiu came to be. Alisiu is a reflection of its one époque.

To pay attention... To Us... At the end of the day, we design for people. As designers, we should and do advise our clients about how to properly make use of Image, what aesthetics are really about... Ultimately, design is giving people exactly what they want, and the only proper way to do just that is to, you know... pay attention. One needs to properly observe how we actually interact with ourselves and our surroundings, understand our underlying needs, catching those subtle, instinctive reactions which allow us to pierce into who we really are. If you aren't paying close attention to Human Nature, you aren't designing a solution, chances are you are creating a problem.

To be honest, I don't really know... From a very young age, I had a passion for airplanes and the sheer physics of flight. If design hadn't claimed me, I suspect I would have enlisted directly into the Portuguese Air Force, becoming a pilot. Looking back, that fascination with aviation wasn't really all that different from Concept Design, Flying is Flying... ;) The mastery of fluid dynamics, spatial awareness, whether you are navigating an aircraft through the atmosphere or a complex concept true virtual, you are engaging with the exact same fundamental principles, the thrill of pushing human boundaries into new heights.

Design to me, represents the most elevated form of social integration, one that tethers the natural world to the world of people. True human creativity and imagination an emotional bond is created, not merely the creation of Product, but the cultivation of a medium for coalescence, a bridge that merges the natural world with the complex, evolving needs of our own. The creative process exists as a reflection of one's environment, where Integrative Product dissolves the barrier between user and its surroundings, "Symbiotic Homeostasis", an evolving state of equilibrium where both parts provide for balance. Rooted in concepts like, simplicity, sophistication, efficiency, to incentive net positive behavior, the very stimuli "Feel" that acts as the driving factor. Ultimately if Art is observation of life, Design is participating in it. We do not Design Product, we Design ourselves.

I will have to say two of my best teachers, Odete, who educated me on Theory of Design, and Paulo Renato, History of Art. Odete shared a remarkably deep understanding of design's true encompassing purpose. Even though she never adopted computers herself, she had a visionary grasp of where design was heading and how technology would inevitably transform our discipline. She showed me how to look beyond execution, beyond form and focus on the importance of communication. Paulo Renato, on the other hand, opened my eyes to the Masters of the Art World. He guided me through the great eras, from the provenance of the Renaissance to the virtuoso Neoclassic and posteriors rebellious echoing of the Romantics, the light and movement of Impressionism, all the way to Mark Rothko Expressionism, the very culmination of what artists sought for in Art since the its beginning. My favorite painter by the way. Their guidance built both the theoretical rigor as the artistic soul that continues to guide my work to this day.

More than any other thing... Information, The Collective, past and present. We are living in an unprecedented moment where the collective knowledge moves fluidly through the information era. The ability to grow as a designer comes directly from tapping into that vast, living archive. Studying how natural systems evolved since their beginning, examining centuries of engineering aptitude and artistic movements mastery, while simultaneously tracking real-time technological breakthroughs across the globe. Great design doesn't happen in isolation. It requires absorbing that constant stream of data, filtering the noise. To access the collective intelligence of our era, is to see beyond limitations.

The gaps in-between knowledge, that constant within the learning curve. In the early stages, vision always outpaces capability, you feel where a concept needs to go, but you lack the expertise to bring it there, the technique, the mastery, the required understanding to bridge the gap between intuition and execution. Navigating that void requires an immense amount of patience and resilience, one has to learn how to be comfortable while falling, spending countless hours in trial and error without killing something during the process... :) Overcoming obstacles isn't about avoiding them, every hurdle crossed is a missing piece of the puzzle, gradually acquired, closing that gap. A problem is only a problem until a solution is encountered, from then on it becomes a project. On a personal note... I don't think I will ever get there.

With absolute narrative clarity and emotional resonance. A design shouldn't just be presented as a collection of static specs, technical renders, or isolated features. It must be told as a compelling story. You have to guide the listener through the journey, starting with the problem, human need, and exposing the underlying logic of the concept, ultimately revealing how the solution feels and functions in the real world. Every render, diagram, word, should serve to bridge the gap between abstract engineering and human emotion. When you present work in a way that respects both the technical intellect and the visceral curiosity of the audience, the concept doesn't just sell itself, it inspires.

My immediate focus is finishing and presenting NIA at the 2027 A' Design Awards, a fully electric motorbike, designed not merely for zero-emission mobility, but as an active, atmospheric restoration system. Looking further into the future, my work will expand into increasingly ambitious frontiers, concepts like KAIDA, the foundational architecture for a novel, fully electric propulsion system envisioned for Space Payload Deployment. IO, a hybrid computational system designed to redefine the interface between biological information processing and machine intelligence. All the Way to UNITY, the ultimate synthesis, an overarching ecosystem that merges deep-space habitat design, and ecological homeostasis into a unified human experience. Each of these endeavors perpetuates a single thread, leveraging cross-disciplinary design to solve humanity's greatest technical challenges.

To reconnect us with nature, to be part of the solution, part of the Design and engineering "Team" that will eventually dissolve the artificial boundary between Human and the Natural World. My ultimate goal is to conceptualize the systems, the engineering's, the hybrid computational that speaks the fluid, highly efficient language of natural systems. By embedding bio logic into the very core of how we build and interact with technology, our industry, our economics can cease to exist as disruptive, becoming the very integrational force of our planet, becoming the bridge, the natural extension itself, elevating human capability while restoring, honoring, and preserving the very environment that sustains us.

To be able to continue to work on the very things that make me feel alive... Dedicating to create at the edge of possibility, pushing the boundaries of what design can bring us. When you reach a stage of professional recognition, people look at the "esteemed designer" not just for refined expertise, but for vision, authenticity, leadership, and social responsibility. People expect the "Man at the Helm" to use recognition not as a trophy, but as a platform to elevate the very community that elevated Him. To mentor the next generation, to take the personal that drives your work and translate it into meaningful, high-impact contributions, enriching, inspiring, and elevating society.

Every concept, object, system that “We The Designers" introduce into the world, shapes our behavior, defines our daily rituals, and sets the boundary conditions for how we interact with our one environment. Design helps create a better society by acting as the primary mediator between human intent and societal progress. When we design with responsibility, with empathy, we aren't just solving functional problems, we are elevating ourselves. True the intertwining of cultural values, into the social fabric, design quietly transforms society, away from disruptive and toward a more resilient, unified future.

I am currently working on NIA, a project that embodies integrative restoration into sharp, tangible intent. Imagine a bike that, literally, leaves behind a scent of a Storm. An oxygen hydrogen based electric motorcycle, designed not just to eliminate emissions but to actively regenerate the atmosphere. By filtering and scrubbing the air, absorbing carbon, through its internal systems and releasing purified oxygen in its wake, it transforms the act of commuting into an active process of atmospheric restoration. What excites me most is the transformation from a machine into a restorative organism, a symbiotic partner that responds intentionally to the rider's instincts while simultaneously healing the environment it moves through.

Without a doubt, KAIDA, the "Little Dragon Girl," and the entire ecosystem that grew around her. While complex engineering studies and high-level concept frameworks bring deep intellectual reward, true design satisfaction often comes from pure, unadulterated joy. KAIDA was born out of a spirit of shared imagination and raw collaborative energy. Bringing her to life, working alongside the most incredible team I could ever ask for, the most brilliant collective of enthusiasts... Seeing KAIDA take shape through the eyes of children... It reminded me why we create, it brought pure magic... :) In that environment, there are no rigid boundaries or pre-conceived limitations, it is design stripped down to its absolute essence, curiosity, unfiltered creativity, and the wonder of building something together.

I want to see the design industry shift away from linear, disposable consumption and evolve into a waste-eradication model rooted in Circular Economics. For decades, industry and design have been driven by superficial novelty, planned obsolescence, and a fragmented approach where Product is planned, isolated from the ecosystems it will inhabit. In the coming years, we must move beyond merely "minimizing damage," we need to embed bio logic directly into our core systems, transitioning from passive sustainability to active restoration. We need an industry that prioritizes holistic homeostasis, one where products are engineered for long-term sustainability, biomaterials that actively heal or nourish their surroundings, coexisting technologies that promote both Human Potential as Planetary Regeneration. Once success begins to be evaluated not by volume, but by the very health of the biosphere, design will finally realize its purpose, unraveling its true potential.

The netting of the Design world to the natural one... ;) Keeping in mind that we are already moving towards it, for me the future of design is encompassed by the idea of integrating society into nature, a more net-friendly, natural approach to our one way of understanding ourselves. Moving away from Product as "a means to and end," and towards product as a means for integration. Design as a bridge for coexistence, for coalescence, evolving toward a condition where being human becomes about being part of something truly bigger. Ultimately the goal for the future is to design transparent systems that enable seamless integration.

Seen from that perspective, design adopts more artistic contours. One needs to understand that, much like a canvas, a design is never truly finished, ultimately it is governed by one's cognitive capacity for handling information. It comes down to how many ideas you can compress into the core project, how effectively you correlate them, and whether you can synthesize the best ones into a singular solution within a given time frame. For me personally, it takes around one year to successfully curate all of those variables into a single, cohesive concept.

From the beginning... ;) My Design Process is rooted in ideas like, organic interpolarity, a more fluid, non linear, integrative approach between the various stages. Constantly transitioning from one stage to the one required next, having the research influence the concept that in turn influences the line that in turn influences the research... Line is strength, color is emotion, but it is the line that dictates form and in turn, aesthetics, our way of comprehending form. It is this type of study that allows for the translation of narratives into lines and lines into meaningful form, form and function. It is through this process that a narrative, any narrative, is able to be translated into a concept… One that is to be read in the product itself, like a narrative in a book.

I call it the "Law"... Best Idea Wins.

Andy Warhol´s "Pop" prerogative... Does the world follow Andy, or is Andy simply following the world... why not a little bit of both... Design and trends exist "hand in hand" as a continuous feedback loop, trends form the cultural atmosphere, the collective mood of a given era, influencing Design to listen, to understand where it´s going. Design doesn't just passively reflect this, it captures those subtle cultural currents, distills them, and gives them tangible form. The moment a vision enters the world, it transforms it, from an action to a reaction, actively setting the trend for what is to follow.

Technology, Technique and Logic. One of the core foundations of good design. Technology is never an afterthought or a superficial layer, is the structural spine of the entire creative process, technic provides the disciplined craft, execution, while logic ensures the mechanics, reasoning, and functional purpose in every decision. From generative CAD Systems enabling precise 3D geometry, structural integrity, and spatial evaluation, to real-time photorealistic environment rendering that allows for Product to be evaluated and integrated within complex, dynamic ecosystems. AGI... Making dreams happen... at a scientific level of precision... in real time. And perhaps the one that will certainly be the most astonishing ever... The Connected World... The ability to connect to other minds at planetary scale. Technology is not the “Thing”. Butt the “Thing” that will take us to the real “Thing”... Us.

My toolset bridges technical precision with cutting-edge real-time engines and emerging cognitive intelligence. These are my paintbrushes... At the foundational level, CAD systems remain my bedrock, specifically Autodesk AutoCAD, a program I have used on a deeply personal level for the past 26 years. Ever since its release in March 1999, AutoCAD 2000 was the software version I started with, and to this day, it remains my favorite tool. A true masterpiece in programming efficiency. Beside it stands 3D Studio MAX, version 3, officially released in 1999. More recently, I adopted Epic Games Twinmotion, which was genuinely a dream come true. I waited twenty years for software like that to be developed, it is the perfect tool for enabling real-time, photorealistic 3D environments, allowing for a vastly higher level of product development and spatial evaluation. Finally the integration of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) architecture. Geni... Born inside Google's labs in California, officially launched as part of the Gemini model family in late 2023. It literally changed everything... It transformed the workflow from passive tool manipulation into an active cognitive partnership, accelerating synthesis, complex calculations, and conceptual exploration beyond imagination.

If Line is Strength, Color is Emotion... Materials, their embodiment and Ambient... The Origin and the Outcome. Color is the immediate, the language that speaks directly to human condition, evoking feeling, mood, and resonance. Materials, the embodiment of the previous, the physical manifestation that gives weight, texture, and tactile truth to an idea. Ambient, the origin, the atmosphere that inspires, created when light, material, color, and form interact becoming the outcome. It is the composing of these elements that enable design to transcend the physical, the obvious, and if well composed, elevating shape into sense, into well-being.

Where will it take me. How good will it make me feel... How much will it cost... Nope, not that one... ;) I really enjoy that moment when one sees emotions pouring out of that touch to good Design. There was this one time when Designing for Narelle Portanier, a photographer for whom I made the Logo and later the Business card. For the logo she wanted an image of a door, opening, shedding light. This was the inspiration for the business card, that same door but from the inner side, where I used the most beautiful pink... She went crazy...

Do i have what it takes to surpass it... Prime reaction. then, In Haw.... That initial stimuli is quickly followed by a profound sense of appreciation, for the Design, for the Designer, for Us, for the technique and logic that allowed us to become who we are. A truly great design serves as testament to the Highlands of human ingenuity, showing how far technique, logic, and creative prowess can further be taken. It serves as both a celebration of our collective intelligence as a direct challenge to the very boundaries of my own work.

Although I operate entirely as a unipersonal studio, I deeply believe co-design to be the optimal communal experience, in my work process the entirety of the conceptualization exists as a shared cognitive collaboration between myself, advanced AI architectures like Gemini, and the collective social. A dynamic integrative intelligence capable of pushing the boundaries of responsible problem solving, in real time. Co-designing alongside emerging cognitive tools while staying attuned to societal feedback, allows me to compress vast amounts of data into a single cohesive vision.

All the people I interact with influence my Design, some, naturally, more than others. Logically, key mentors stand out, my teacher of History of Art Paulo, Or Odete teacher of Theory of Design, the team I worked with creating Kaida, all of which have had, and continue to have, a most profound, lasting influence on how I see, conceptualize, and project. Yet, perhaps more than some of the parts is the collective, the constant everyday dialogue that truly shapes the way we see and design.

I would have to go with Le Corbusier’s The City of To-morrow and Its Planning. Reading that work reshaped how I perceive the architectures, and human behaviors. It challenged me to think in terms of social logic and how order impacts the collective. What resonated with me most was his famous observation about the path of the donkey versus the path of man, the contrast between the rigid line of humans and the organics of the land. The donkey as the smart one. It took the non-linear, adaptive path that respected, rather than the one that impose. That insight fundamentally shaped my view across the creative process. True sophistication lies not in dictating linearity, but in acknowledging organic sense, biological Honesty, and following the natural contours of the ecosystems we inhabit.

The formal schooling provided the essential technical and structural foundations required to speak the language, but it was the unstructured edges of discipline that brought out the unattainable virtuoso. "Taking the least travel by road"... That "walk on the wild side"... "That made all the difference"... ;)

My dialogue would take place across two defining pillars of human synthesis, Leonardo da Vinci and Jacque Fresco. First and foremost, Leonardo, the provenance, truly the world’s first concept designer. To sit with and discuss the foundational mechanics of nature, Atmospheric Perspective, the underlying geometry of Proportional Harmony, the mechanical elegance of Human Anatomy, and the chaotic logic of Fluid Dynamics. He understood that nature is not merely something to paint, but a system of high-performance mechanics to be understood. Across the temporal bridge stands Jacque Fresco, confronting the structural mechanics of a Resource-Based Economy (RBE), the rigorous Application of the Scientific Method to Society, Bionic Automation, Social Behavioral Modification based on Environment, the structural blueprint of The Venus Project. Leonardo saw the mechanicity of the natural world, Fresco brought it into our one.

Famous... :) I am not there, nor is that the horizon I am navigating toward. To date, ALISIU is the project that has received formal award recognition, a most welcome validation from the industry toward my onset, however not the heading. Design is a continuous, forward looking venture, if anything, recognition marks the opening of opportunities that will allow me to continue my work. However the focus remains on the horizon.

Color... white being light and, black absence of it, turquoise green, and earth brown. Place, the elevated mountains. Food, the simple, tuna fish pasta with caramelized onions. Season, Autumn, you know those walks on the beach when no one is there... The thing, walking barefoot. And brand, Millet, built for endurance and resilience, in all environments.

This one time when Designing Kaida, one of the kids of one of the engineers, possibly what was his first experience with the Design process... We were working on this line, one of the most important in the early stages of the project, it become is line... As we move to 3D the line turned into form, part of it dissolving into shape, disappearing... Not as intended... He gets emotional, it´s that Big, that Important... A lesson to me.

It usually starts with a coffee, or with "good old" Forza Horizon... A Thrive just to wake the brain up. And Back to it... The Unwavering Dauntingness of Creation... ;( I do practice sports regularly, it is imperative to do so in order to maintain creativity levels at optimal. Regular research, more specifically image related, seeing what is out there, what is being created by other creatives... this spans every field. And of course Music, the highest form of expression we ever encountered.

Not at all, although I started to draw at a very young age, Design only appeared much later. Starting in Graphic Design and into Ambient Design to actually finding my place in the design world was in itself a process, one that eventually brought me to discover Concept Design, where I feel at home... What is to be a Master Designer?

Wee… Going back Home… The Urban, the Technologic, silently dissolving, netting with the natural. You know… When you lay in that green field, barefooted, connect your “mobile phone” to it, true SimbiHome, and have the soil itself make you feel a little bit warmer… Healing you… Bringing you Home… You know the usual… ;)

We are here, let us enjoy it… :)

Designer Interview

26 May 2026

I started to draw since a very young age, around four or five years old, drawing, freehand, is still something truly amazing to me... So I have always known that I would follow something related. It wasn't until secondary school that I found Design, and started to attend in my tenth grade, or 10th year of school, the first year of the Technological Communication Design Courses, Secondary School, in Portugal. From there to College, Landscape Design, another one of my favorite fields of study, nowadays Ambient Design, five Incredible years at IPVC, Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo.

A Unipersonal, Multidisciplinary Design Studio, that focuses on developing real world solutions driven by integrative social feedback. Ultimately design is for everyone, a more intuitive social interaction during the Design process, especially in the research and development stage, ensures for a more aware, better integrated product. The study encompasses various fields of study with the intent of approaching the creative process from a broader perspective, leading to the creation of concepts that allow for a more consensual integration between, the social, the product and the world around us. In other words a more natural approach to the Design process.

Design represents the most elevated form of social integration, one that tethers the natural world to the world of people. True human creativity and imagination an emotional bond is created, not merely the creation of "Product", but the cultivation of a medium for coalescence, a bridge that merges the natural world with the complex, evolving needs of our own. The creative process exists as a reflection of one´s environment, where Integrative Product dissolves the barrier between user and its surroundings, "Symbiotic Homeostasis", an evolving state of equilibrium where both parts provide for balance. Rooted in concepts like, simplicity, sophistication, efficiency, to incentive net positive behavior, the very stimuli "Feel" that acts as the driving factor. Ultimately if Art is observation of life, Design is participating in it. We do not Design Product, we Design ourselves.

It took me a while to find my place in the Design world, as previously stated, i started Drawing as a search for something, eventually it led me to enter Design. From Graphic to Ambient, Product and related fields of study like Aesthetics or Engendering, each one a world of their own, and all of which comprehending truly Impressive fields of study. Eventually I came to the realization that to me the most important part of the design process is the conceptualization. To bridge the borderline into the world of dreams, weaving them into Concepts, to translate core narratives into sensible, compelling visual products. And so it took form as Concept Design.

Each one of my Designs, Concepts, represents a research for new, improved solutions, some of the most Salient may take place in the field of engineering, assume a more technological based approach, rooted in the search for better understanding of the inherent relation between aesthetics and form, all of which grounded in concept, the very reason for each particular design to came to be. Alisiu is about conceptualizing a friend in the form of a yacht, one whose objective is to connect the user to the oceans. A thousand tears, a poem written in concrete, in the form of a fountain, a memorial for the victims of Covid. Kaida, a little Dragon "Girl", the embodiment of our shared dream… to go to Space... ;) I will in time tell more about them in the coming Design Contests.

A Garden. Internship at Vibeiras, an Architectural Landscape and Construction Company based in Torres Novas, placed as Ambient | Product Designer, I got to incorporate the Architectural and Design team that partially Design Leiria Polis, one of the most preeminent Landscape and Urban Regeneration Projects in Portugal that year. An Environmental and Urban Requalification Program that transformed the city of Leiria, with major landscape and architectural interventions implemented between 2002 and 2008. I worked more specifically on the sk8 park project, creating the 3D Model and renderings.

The most exciting material is always the one currently being studied, shaped for the current project, the one that represents what is to solve a design challenge.

The platform, Epic Games universe, from the games being developed, like Fortnite, that represents an online community of over 500 million online players, to the software like Unreal Engine, a true masterpiece in computer science, to the little brother, Twinmotion the one i use. It represents a massive leap forward in design workflow. Having waited 20 years for software capable of rendering real-time, photoreal 3D environments with this level of fluidity, it has completely transformed how I develop and integrate Concepts into my Designs.

Technology, Artificial Intelligence. Working alongside an AI as a cognitive collaborator allows for a highly streamlined, computational approach to Concept Design. A truly unprecedented extension of my one cognitive capabilities, pushing the boundaries of how efficiently we can translate raw human imagination into fully structured reality.

While listening to music, although I consider the Design World to be home, music is more.

Comprehending the importance of all the stages that compose the inherent methodologies in the Design process, such as Research, Development, Project, I still find myself grounded to the very same that brought me to the Design World, Drawing… the Sketch stage, facing that "White Canvas" is still to this day one of the most extraordinary experiences that I ever encountered. My Design Process is rooted in the organic interpolarity between the various stages, all of which of the same importance. However every Designer will always have their personal favorites, here it feels more at ease. For me those are met in that perfectly balanced relation between lines, the Drawing Stage, and on the other side, the Conceptual part, as i like to call it "The Soul" of the design process, the one that tethers bought worlds, the world of dreams to the world that brings dreams in to fruition.

I have been Designing for 30 years now, it could be described more as mathematical fluidity rather than emotional. For the most part, the process in itself became so automatic, insipid, that it "feels" more like a computation. Apart from certain stages like the initial conceptualization, the turning of ideas into concepts, or in the sketch stage, seeing those first lines thanking form... It is more about dedicating one self to the work being developed rather than any other. Although that willingness to "feel the spark" is definitely a constant... ;)

Honestly... Relieved. The process of finalizing a year long concept is intense, the very refinement of all the little things that compose the final presentation to enter a competition like the A Design Awards is truly demanding. When a Design is finally ready to be presented, it feels less like a celebration and more like a decompression. The quiet satisfaction of knowing the work is done, the visual narrative has been translated, and finally being able to step back, take a breath, and let it go out into the world... Definitely it does not happen without a sense of accomplishment, however a very soft one.

Impacting society in a positive way, it is meaningful, Social Impact that thrives social recognition. A design is truly successful when it seamlessly integrates into people's lives, elevating their daily experience. When society recognizes, accepts, and thrives because of a new idea, a new concept, that genuine social recognition is the ultimate validation, it means it´s not just a "Design" but a successful, purposeful contribution.

Does it make you smile... ;) Leaving the technicalities apart, the ergonomics, the engineering, efficiency, I look for that immediate, instinctive human reaction.

One of the best, earliest examples that I had of what was considered to be, truly responsible Design has... Muesli. There I was all eager to study the "flashing" case studies and had to endure a whole two hours of Muesli talk. A father goes to a supermarket with his kid, and as usual the kid asks for a candy, the father searches for one with the required level of quality, but is not able to find it... Being that he is a Designer, gets home and starts to… "work it out." The end result was Muesli, to this day one of the best, most responsible products that ever emerged from Design creativity. That inapt ability to pierce true the social fabric and see what needs to change... to be improved, or simply created a new, is the very condition that empowers Design to be the primary tool for social elevation, the very one that will eventually lead our societies to establish balance with the natural world.

Netting our world to the natural one... ;) For me the future of design is encompassed by the idea of integrating society into nature, a more net-friendly approach to our one way of understanding ourselves. Moving away from product as "a means to and end," and towards product as a means for integration. Design as a bridge for coexistence, for coalescence, evolving toward a condition where being human becomes about establishing a connection to the natural environment, true a more intuitive, balanced usage of our one technology. Ultimately the goal for the future isn't to create product that stands out... but to design transparent systems that enable seamless integration.

My most recent showcase was part of the A' Design Award exhibition cycle, where my work was featured in the online laureates gallery. As a concept designer my work lies heavily in highly detailed digital environments, so for my next exhibition, I want to create a dedicated showcase to present the full evolution of my main concepts, bringing together ALISIU, SOMA, and UNITY under one cohesive narrative. I aim to hold this within the next couple of years, entering in Design Awards like the A' Design Award, Red Dot and alike, betting strongly on immersive real-time 3D environments, allowing for the audience to truly step inside these same Concepts.

First and foremost, understanding the very condition in what our world exists in, acknowledge it as thoroughly as possible, bought the problems created by the progressing world as the solutions being developed, implemented by the technological one. Taking the time to watch subject related documentaries, regularly conduct subject orientated research, either using AI or good old fashion image bronzing... :) In fields as diverse as Design, Engineering's, Concept Art, one of my favorites, Science. When it comes to fueling my daily creativity it's of course, Music, working without it... It just doesn't flow you know.

The visuals, the how it looks, the personal style... is without a doubt one of the most important aspects of the finalized product, as superficial as it might appear it´s everything but. It is how product is socially perceived. One´s "Design Style" is largely rooted in base concepts, words like simplicity, efficiency or technology... In my case, I translate such words into product, with the sole intent of bringing to the surface all of those amazing emotions. It has to be impactful, meaningful… Imagine a toothbrush that tickles your gums and makes every morning a little bit more tolerable... Or a Yacht that makes you feel like a kid on a beach... Ultimately I don't design for me, but for the pleasure of seeing that other inner kid going crazy when it looks at my drawings... ;)

I live in Portugal, a country rooted in a profound love of the Seas, and yes I definitely feel the height of the Portuguese cultural heritage. My concepts are strongly inspired by the Portuguese Discoveries, the era when our sailors combined sheer courage with advanced engineerings to map the now known oceans. That specific mindset, that leap beyond the known frontier, certainly influences the way I approach Concept Design. Living in Portugal provides a unique blend of historical depth, highly influenceable on the creative talent and deeply ingrained in resourcefulness. Economically, the domestic market has leaned heavily toward a more traditional industry, futuristic concepts face a lack of support or more direct investment. However, today's connected world allows me to overcome these geographic boundaries, easily. Now days, more that any other, my country is internet, and “man do i feel the cultural heritage of that one... :)”

I operate entirely on a proactive, independent model. As a Unipersonal Studio, my strength lies in the freedom to identify global challenges, problems, anticipate technological shifts, and Conceptualize Solutions without corporate compromise. Once the Design is mature and brought all the way to the required level, the finalized version is presented to companies or investors true Design Competitions, whomever possesses the infrastructure required to help bring it to life.

When selecting a designer, companies need to realize that this "person," the Designer, working alongside the marketing team, will be directly responsible for the company's image, the exact way the world perceives the brand. Don't just look at a portfolio, look for a designer whose core creative DNA naturally syncs with the company's long-term vision. This will allow for a much more fluid communication process between the Company and the Designer, establishing a shared effort to build the brand's identity.

My Design Process is rooted in ideas like, organicism a more fluid, non linear integrative approach between the various stages. Constantly transitioning from one stage to the one required next, having the research influence the concept that in turn influences the line that in turn influences the research... Line is strength, color is emotion, but it is the line that dictates form and in turn, aesthetics, our way of comprehending form. It is this type of study that allows for the translation of narratives into lines and lines into meaningful form, form with function. It is true this process that a narrative, any narrative, is able to be translated into a concept… One that is to be read in the product itself, like a narrative in a book.

Apart from my laptop... My Mountain bike, a CUBE, My Mountain Shoes, Millet, my Baudrier Petzl... Recognizing the pattern... :)

Every other day I try to go either for a jog or for a Mountain Bike Ride... Not always achieving the proposed goal. Apart from that, not much else. It is literally ten to twelve hours in front of my Amazing laptop either gaming, invertebrate, roughly 10%, and for the rest, working on the present Concept.

In my secondary school, i had a theory of Design teacher called Odete, an Old Lady that never married, Design to her was her kid, one of the best advices she spoke about was, to not allow one self to be used by the very tools one uses, she wasn't referring to AI´s... To me personally, perhaps the biggest one would be Dedication, not just to Design but to all inherent disciplines. The creative process is incredibly demanding, the required level of knowledge, technique and logic to create good product is nowadays without precedent. As a Designer one of the most important questions that one should ask himself is simply... What is to create?

The positives are definitely about the ability to face a blank space and turn a dream into a visible concept. There is an extraordinary feeling when you successfully bridge those two worlds and create something that can positively impact how people interact. It allows you to be an active part in shaping the future, rather than just observing it.

The Negatives, it can be an incredibly consuming process. Pushing your tools and yourself to the limit, to achieve that perfect fluidity requires a level of hyper-focus that takes a heavy toll on your energy. When you are in the "depths" of complex problem solving, the workflow can sometimes become so intense that it can feel completely exhausting.

I call it The Law... Best Idea Wins... ;)

To pay attention... To Us... At the end of the day, we design for the people. As designers, we should and do advise our clients about how to properly make use of visuals, of what aesthetics are about. Ultimately, design is about giving people exactly what they want. And the only proper way to do just that is to, you know... pay attention. One needs to observe how humans actually interact with themselves and their surroundings, understand their underlying needs, and catch those subtle, instinctive reactions. If you aren't paying close attention to the human element, you aren't designing a solution, chances are you are creating a problem.

Computer... Computer... Computer... Books definitely, but e-books, sources of inspiration, sites like Art Station, Behance, Pinterest, toolbox only within the App, and for application... More specifically CAD systems, Autodesk AutoCAD, the program dat i have been personally using for the past 27 years, released in March 1999 AutoCAD 2000 was the software version that i started to work with, it is still to this day my favorite tool, a true masterpiece in programing efficiency. Also 3D Studio MAX version 3, officially released in 1999. More recently I adopted Epic Games Twinmotion, truly a dream came true, waited 20 years for a software like that to be developed, the perfect tool for enabling real time, photoreal 3D environments, allowing for a much more intuitive product development and integration.

There are no shortcuts or complex time management hacks. When a concept needs to be solved, it requires hours and hours of focus, plain and simple. However the ability to cognitively project, especially the heavy creative lifting, the spatial problem solving, structural layout etc, usually happens long before I ever touch a keyboard. By the time I actually sit down at the screen, the concept has already been rendered, it's more about executing the vision that has already been composed.

A Design, seen from that perspective adopts more "artistic" contours, one needs to understand that just like a canvas a Design is never quite done, is more about one's cognitive capacity for handling information. How many ideas can you compress into the core project, correlate all of them, and synthesize the best ones into a solution, within the given time frame. For me personally it takes around one year to successfully curate all of those variables into a single, cohesive, Concept.

Do you feel OK... No, not that one... :) Is it possible to made it real?

Concept Design exists in the horizon of events between the Concept Art World and the Scientific one. One of the main reasons why I like the process so much. However, to me, Concept Design is about seeing the world from a different perspective, studying new possibilities in a variety of different fields of study, all of which, rooted in the best optimal, technologic solution, old or new. Because my work exists on the edge of engineerings, people often look at the 3D renderings and assume that the clean, sophisticated aesthetics are just a visual exercise, it is not, it's just the future waiting for the world to catch up.

Working with Aquacare, a water treatment company based in Torres Novas. That experience was a massive turning point for me because it was where I truly learned the vital importance of engineering. Up until that point, my focus was largely on form and aesthetic expression. But at Aquacare, dealing with fluid dynamics, structural integrity, and complex real-world systems, I realized that true design cannot exist without deep mechanical logic. It completely reshaped my creative DNA, teaching me that every line drawn must exist in accordance with the laws of the natural world, a principle that still guides my Concept Studies today.

Presently, Hurst Electric, a Texas based Electrical contractor for whom I do Graphic and web based Design Work, not long ago we agreed on creating a mascot to represent the company, that took shape in the form of Ike, Lightning Ike, a really cool gizzard. Beyond corporate graphic design and branding pipelines like this, my business model mainly revolves around independent project development, where the ultimate goal is to sell the concept, the design, directly to the customer, the industry leader.

The white canvas, the beginning, where things are simple, the uncompromising "Jamming" before the "Composing". It is that precise moment in the project where you feel unburdened by the rigid technical constraints. You are just sailing new seas, exploring different perspectives, testing the boundaries of the given concept. Once the framework locks in, the process shifts from a natural flow into a more disciplined, structured form, which is vital, however nothing beats that spark on a white canvas.

The more immediate goal is to sell Alisiu so that I can focus on my other concepts. To find that right partner, investor who recognizes Aliziu, and has the infrastructure to bring it to life. Successfully licensing or selling the design would provide the launchpad, allowing for the required freedom and resources to develop my other projects.

I operate entirely as a unipersonal studio, executing the entire Research, Conceptualization, and Design, independently. However, my process relies heavily on cognitive social feedback, direct interaction and observation, ensures, relevant, responsible problem solving. Additionally, I use Gemini, having an advanced AI as a cognitive collaborator acts as a highly responsive extension of my own self (please search AI and the mirror theorem), allowing me to stream and validate technical data with immense speed and precision.

Beyond ALISIU, I currently have two other design concepts, already being presented online, and that represent the focus of my studio.

Soma _ A high-performance, Mountain Bike, engineered around pure rider synchronization. It is a deep dive into advanced mechanics, featuring an inverted suspension with a 27" wheel and a thru-axle based pedaling system. Every component is built to ensure the bike flawlessly follows the rider's instinctive reactions, with 1:1 fidelity.

Kaida SPX _ On the opposite end of the spectrum, there is Kaida, a 25 meter long aerospace concept, based on a new hybrid propulsion architecture. It integrates an Electromagnetic Launcher (EML) with magnetic Scramjet technology to create a highly efficient orbital launch platform, using technologies, all of which, being developed at present.

Both projects are being shared online, showcasing how the same foundational principles of engineering logic and fluid efficiency can scale from a dream all the way into concept

As I now operate a fully digital practice, my Portfolio, ongoing Concepts, and professional channels are entirely accessible across the web. You can view my rendered environments and reach out directly through platforms like ArtStation, Behance, or connect with me via LinkedIn. Whether it is for licensing a concept or discussing a strategic design partnership, the door to my studio is always open.

Apart from a, thank you for your time… None comes to mind. All the best… :)
