Interview with Eduardo Baroni
Design Legend Interview
20 January 2025
I graduated in Industrial Design at the Fine Arts school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
As a child I always tried to create my own toys. I used parts of broken toys to build new ones. I also liked to disassemble anything I could to see how it worked and sometimes even fix it. I liked to create new things, to imagine new functions for existing products.
When it was time to choose my professional there were no doubt that I would study to become a designer.
I design furniture. Residential and contract furniture.
Never give up and always be curious.
A good designer makes good products. A great designer creates new ideas.
A good design should comunicate its values creating conection with people.
Good design comunicates with people, creates links and identity. A product with a soul.
I wish I could design everything.
My dream home.
Passion and persistence
Michael Thonet, Verner Panton, Marcel Breuer... The list is endless
Panton chair. It´s simple, it´s gorgeous, it´s functional, it´s timeless.
Hard to choose a
Always be curious, never be satisfied.
Probably a frustrated person.
Design for me is comunication. Designing a peace of furniture involves creating a conection between manufacturer, stores and final consumer. A product must say something about itself, about it´s owner and about it´s manufacturer. When you are looking for a chair you are not just looking for something to seat on. Instead you are going to buy the chair that best comunicates with you the values that it stands for. You are looking for a chair that relates to who you are.
My family.
Curiosity and hard work.
Finding people that believed in my work.
Telling the ideas it should transmit.
Make exciting projects and have a meaningfull life.
That´s not actually something I can answer,
Creating things that exists for a good reason.
3d printed furniture.
The ones people likes to use it.
Less products and more quality.
It should head to responsible design.
It depends a lot from project to project.
Thinking a lot. Before start drawing there´s a lot of thinking.
Design something people actually need.
Great design sets the trends. Poor design is guided by the trends,
It´s one of the grounds when you start a project.
Nothing special. Paper, pens, image sofware and CAD software
Everything is linked to form a unity.
I should have thought of that!
I usually work alone in the conceptual design process and then with the furniture company team of engineers and prototype makers to go from the aproved design concept to the final product.
Woodworkers.
Working and learning.
Da vinci.
I don´t want to be famous. I want my products be famous.
I like when the ideas flow.
NO. Not at all. But there were already some signs...
I don´t have good feeling for the future.
I do what I do because I love it. And I love it when people like my work. It makes me proud and greatfull.

As a child I always tried to create my own toys. I used parts of broken toys to build new ones. I also liked to disassemble anything I could to see how it worked and sometimes even fix it. I liked to create new things, to imagine new functions for existing products.
I work as a small design studio developing new products for furniture companies anywhere in the world.

I like designing products that offers a new interpretation on old stabilished rules or a new suggestion of use for common objects.
The one that i am working on is always my favorite because it is still a mistery to be solved.
It was a bar stool for a large furniture store in Brazil. It was not a huge success, but it was a spark that led me to furniture design.
I like to mix materials, to use the contrast between materials to create new forms, textures and feelings.
I think the mornings, especially the sunny ones, stimulate my creativity.
First of all are ergonomics than I think about the rest.
When I am creating I feel calm, stimulated.
Seeing my products into people's homes makes me very proud.
As I said before the product should communicate with consumer. When this communication creates a connection with people it's very likely to be a successful product.
The first thing a product should do is to attract your eyes. If it fails on this it's already a bad design.
I try to do my work with honesty and to develop products that will have a real function and a long life on this planet.
In the near future I believe design will be more customizable to individual needs. Consumers will be more involved in the development of new products.
My last exhibition was in Rio de Janeiro in 2017. Milan is always the place to be seen I wish I will be there next year,
Inspiration come from everything that I see. Nature, books, art, everything is inspiring if you are aware to see it.
My design is usually visualy light, with simple lines and I try to enhance the materials qualities
I live in Brazil and yes, the cultural aspects of my country are very present when I am designing and it should be.
I usually receive a demand from the company and try to create some concepts for them to choose wich one is more
There should be a good relationship between company and designer. Designers got to have freedom to criticize and to try to push some limits of the client to achieve good results. This process should not be a game of tug of war, instead it should be a friendly brainstorming where both parts will be rewarded. The best designer in the world won't be able to do much if the communication between the parts is not good.
Make good partnerships. surround yourself with good people.
It depends a lot for each company that I work with because I depend on their feedback and their
