Designer of the Day Interview
29 May 2024
I have been in the interior design industry for over a decade. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with prestigious companies and clients worldwide. I am the founder of Arsight, an interior design studio based in New York City. My work has been recognized by prominent publications such as The New York Times and Interior Design Magazine, and I have received numerous accolades, including being a winner of Muse Design Awards, French Design Awards, London Design Awards, and others. My educational background includes a degree in Interior Design, and I have continually honed my skills through international projects and collaborations.
My journey into design began in my childhood in Ukraine, where I was surrounded by a family of designers. This creative environment instilled in me a passion for design and aesthetics. I pursued formal education in Interior Design, which further solidified my career choice. My drive to become a designer was both an internal passion and influenced by my parents’ work. Over the decade, I gained extensive experience through various projects, eventually founding Arsight to bring my unique vision to life.
My top three priorities in the design process are functionality, aesthetics, and storytelling. I focus on creating spaces that are not only visually appealing but also highly functional and meaningful. My technique involves a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology, including 3D visualizations and computer-aided design. I approach each project by first understanding the client’s vision and needs, then creating mood boards and sketches to visualize the final space.
Designing is an exhilarating process for me. The initial idea phase is particularly exciting, as it allows for the exploration of endless possibilities. As the design evolves, there is a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction in seeing the vision come to life. The most rewarding moment is witnessing the client’s reaction to the completed project, which brings a mix of joy, pride, and accomplishment.
Growing up in a family of designers, I learned the importance of craftsmanship and attention to detail. My European roots have imbued me with a deep appreciation for history and authenticity in design. Additionally, my travels and exposure to diverse cultures have enriched my creative perspective. Non-design skills such as project management, communication, and empathy have been crucial in my success as a designer.
My growth path involves expanding Arsight’s reach and continuing to innovate in sustainable and adaptive design. In the future, I aspire to work on large-scale projects that push the boundaries of traditional design, such as creating a sustainable urban community. I want to be remembered as a designer who blends beauty, functionality, and sustainability, leaving a lasting impact on the industry.
For young designers, I advise staying curious and continually learning. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and don’t be afraid to take risks. Build a strong foundation of both technical and creative skills, and always stay true to your unique vision. Networking and seeking mentorship from experienced designers can also provide valuable insights and guidance.
Success in design comes from a combination of creativity, hard work, and continuous improvement. Stay updated with the latest trends and technologies, but don’t lose sight of your personal design philosophy. Collaboration and open communication are key to achieving the best results. Avoid common pitfalls like overcommitting or losing focus on the client’s needs.
A typical day starts with a morning meditation and coffee, followed by reviewing my schedule and setting priorities for the day. I spend time on client meetings, site visits, and collaborative sessions with my team. The day involves a mix of creative work, such as sketching and designing, and administrative tasks like project management and client communications. Evenings are often reserved for personal relaxation or attending design events.
I stay updated with design trends by attending industry events, reading design publications, and engaging with the design community. While trends are important, I prioritize creating timeless designs that resonate with my clients’ visions and needs. My inspiration comes from various sources, including nature, art, history, and urban life.
A well-designed project seamlessly integrates form and function, evokes an emotional response, and meets the client’s needs. Good design is timeless, sustainable, and tells a story. I evaluate designs based on their aesthetic appeal, functionality, and the impact they have on their users.
A design is ready when it meets the project’s goals, aligns with the client’s vision, and fulfills its intended purpose. While there is always room for improvement, it’s important to recognize when the design has achieved its objectives and move on to the next project. Continuous feedback and iterations ensure that the final product is both innovative and personal.
One of my most significant projects was a comprehensive renovation in Tribeca, NYC. This project involved creating a luxurious yet authentic space by drawing inspiration from natural elements. It was a unique challenge that required balancing aesthetics and functionality, and it received numerous awards and recognition. The success of this project solidified my reputation in the industry.
I greatly admire Frank Lloyd Wright for his innovative and timeless designs. His ability to harmonize architecture with nature and his commitment to functional beauty have been a significant influence on my work. If I had the chance, I would love to have a conversation with him about his design philosophy and approach.
Living in New York City, I am constantly inspired by the vibrant culture and dynamic energy of the city. Music, art, and urban life play a significant role in my creative process. My European roots also influence my design sensibility, emphasizing craftsmanship and authenticity. Good design is essential for societal advancement, and I strive to incorporate sustainable practices in both my professional and personal life.
At Arsight, we prioritize collaboration, innovation, and sustainability. We work closely with our clients to understand their vision and needs, ensuring that each project is a true reflection of their aspirations. Our team values open communication, attention to detail, and a commitment to excellence. When selecting partners, we look for individuals who share our passion for design and dedication to quality.
I believe in giving back to the community through pro bono design work and supporting humanitarian projects. I am involved in various design events and conferences, where I mentor young designers and provide opportunities for growth. Good design has the power to improve lives, and I strive to use my skills to make a positive impact on society.
Participating in design awards and competitions like the A’ Design Award has been incredibly beneficial. It provides recognition for our work, opens up new opportunities for collaboration, and inspires us to continue pushing the boundaries of design. Design competitions are important for fostering creativity and innovation, and being named Designer of the Day was a significant honor that validated our efforts and achievements.

Design Legend Interview
1 July 2024
I am Artem Kropovinsky, the founder of Arsight, an interior design studio based in New York City. I have been in the field of interior design for over a decade, with a background enriched by a master’s degree in design. My journey into interior design began in childhood, surrounded by a family deeply rooted in the design sphere. This environment was a creative incubator that guided me naturally into my career. Over the years, I have worked on diverse projects globally, which have significantly shaped my approach to design.
Design is the essence of my being, a legacy passed down from my parents who were both established in interior design. Their passion for transforming spaces ignited a similar zeal in me. The desire to create spaces that resonate emotionally and functionally with their occupants drives my work. For me, design is about crafting experiences and narratives that reflect the unique characteristics of the inhabitants.
Becoming a designer was a conscious choice fueled by passion and inspiration from my family. From a young age, I was fascinated by the transformative power of design, and I knew this was the path I wanted to pursue.
At Arsight, we handle a wide range of projects, from luxury residential spaces to commercial interiors. I am particularly passionate about sustainable and innovative designs that incorporate technology and local craftsmanship. I wish to design more spaces that push the boundaries of sustainability and functionality, creating environments that are both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally responsible.
Young designers should embrace a relentless curiosity and a thirst for knowledge. They should cultivate their unique voice and remain authentic, as true originality is more impactful than following trends. Networking, continuous learning, and practical experience are crucial for growth and recognition in the field.
A great designer goes beyond aesthetics to create spaces that resonate emotionally and functionally with their occupants. They possess a deep understanding of materials, sustainability, and the ability to innovate while staying true to their unique vision. Great designers continuously evolve, embracing new challenges and pushing the boundaries of their craft.
A good design seamlessly integrates form and function, offering comfort and a sense of belonging while serving its purpose efficiently. It should evoke an emotional response and reflect the unique character of its occupants. I evaluate good design by its ability to balance aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability.
Good design has the power to transform spaces, enhancing the quality of life and productivity of its occupants. It creates environments that are not only visually pleasing but also functional and sustainable. Investing in good design is investing in the well-being and long-term value of a space.
If I had the time, I would love to design a public space or community center that promotes social interaction and environmental sustainability. Designing for a community allows for creating spaces that positively impact a larger group of people and foster a sense of unity and belonging.
My dream project is to design an eco-friendly, self-sustaining residential community that integrates advanced technologies with natural materials. This project would showcase the potential of sustainable design in creating comfortable and innovative living environments.
The secret to success in design lies in authenticity and empathy. Understanding the client’s needs and aspirations, combined with a genuine passion for design, allows for creating spaces that are both beautiful and meaningful. Staying true to my creative vision and continuously evolving with the industry trends also plays a crucial role.
I draw inspiration from various design legends, including Kelly Wearstler for her bold and eclectic style, and Tadao Ando for his minimalist and nature-integrated designs. Their unique approaches and innovative techniques continue to influence my work.
One of my favorite designs is the Vitra Campus by Herzog & de Meuron. The project beautifully combines modern architecture with the surrounding landscape, creating a harmonious and functional space. I admire the attention to detail and the seamless integration of form and function.
One of my greatest designs is the comprehensive renovation of a historic Brooklyn brownstone. The project involved restoring 140-year-old wood and stained glass windows while incorporating modern technologies for energy and water efficiency. The balance between preserving historical elements and integrating contemporary features makes this design stand out.
Continuous learning and practical experience are key to becoming a better designer. I have always sought opportunities to learn from other professionals, participate in design contests, and stay updated with industry trends. Surrounding yourself with a diverse team and embracing collaboration also contributes significantly to growth and innovation.
If I hadn’t become a designer, I would have pursued a career in architecture or environmental science. Both fields share my passion for creating functional and sustainable spaces that enhance the quality of life.
For me, design is a harmonious blend of form, functionality, and emotional resonance. It goes beyond aesthetics to create experiences that reflect the unique characteristics of the occupants and their surroundings. Design is about telling a story through space.
My biggest supporter has been my wife, Julia. Her unwavering support and objective insights have been instrumental in navigating the challenges and successes of my career. Additionally, the professional community of interior designers has provided inspiration and knowledge exchange that has helped me grow.
A combination of passion, continuous learning, and practical experience has helped me become a great designer. Embracing challenges and staying true to my creative vision while being open to new ideas and technologies has been crucial in my journey.
One of the significant obstacles was balancing multiple roles early in my career, which led to burnout and a realization of the importance of delegation and collaboration. Adapting to new markets and client expectations also posed challenges that required resilience and continuous learning.
Designers should present their work through a combination of visual storytelling and technical details. Utilizing tools like VR and AR can provide clients with an immersive experience, while clear and concise presentations of design concepts, mood boards, and material samples help communicate the vision effectively.
Currently, we’re working on several exciting projects. One of them is the renovation of a historic landmark, a two-level apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn. This project is particularly fascinating as we will blend the historic elements with a completely new aesthetic that complements the historic environment.
My ultimate goal as a designer is to create spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also sustainable and functional. I aim to leave a lasting impact on the design industry by promoting innovative and environmentally responsible practices.
People expect an esteemed designer to deliver unique, innovative, and high-quality designs that meet their specific needs and aspirations. They also expect professionalism, clear communication, and the ability to manage complex projects efficiently.
Design has the power to create spaces that enhance the quality of life, promote well-being, and foster community interaction. Good design can address social and environmental challenges, creating more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient spaces for everyone.
Currently, we are working on several residential projects, including some in office spaces. For the residential projects, we have begun the design process for a house in Westchester County in New York and are very excited about our approach. The design will be modern with a lot of layers. It won’t be eclectic, but rather a combination of styles that will look great together. There are challenging risks involved, which makes it even more interesting.
The comprehensive renovation of a historic Brooklyn brownstone gave me immense satisfaction. The project involved preserving historical elements while integrating modern technologies, resulting in a space that is both aesthetically beautiful and functionally advanced. Seeing the positive impact on the property value and the client’s satisfaction was incredibly rewarding.
I would like to see a stronger emphasis on sustainability and environmental responsibility in the design industry. This includes using eco-friendly materials, promoting energy-efficient solutions, and creating spaces that minimize their carbon footprint.
The design field is moving towards more sustainable, adaptive, and inclusive practices. There will be a greater focus on eco-friendly materials, flexible spaces that adapt to changing needs, and designs that cater to a diverse range of users.
The timeline for finalizing a design project varies depending on its complexity and scope. On average, it can take anywhere from a few months to over a year, from the initial concept to the final installation and styling.
I start with understanding the client’s vision and needs, followed by extensive research and mood boards to explore different design directions. This is followed by sketches, 3D models, and regular feedback sessions with the client to ensure the design evolves in harmony with their desires.
Design with empathy and authenticity. Every space has its own story, and it’s our privilege as designers to narrate it beautifully.
I believe that true design sets the trends. While it’s important to be aware of current trends, a good designer creates timeless, innovative spaces that influence future trends rather than merely following them.
Technology plays a crucial role in enhancing the design process and client experience. Tools like VR, AR, and 3D modeling allow for immersive visualizations, making it easier for clients to understand and engage with the design. Additionally, technology helps streamline project management and collaboration.
We use a variety of design software, including AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Revit, for creating detailed plans and 3D models. Additionally, VR and AR tools are used for immersive client presentations, and project management software helps keep track of progress and timelines.
Color, materials, and ambiance are fundamental elements that shape the character and mood of a space. They influence how people feel and interact within the environment. Choosing the right combination can enhance functionality, comfort, and aesthetic appeal.
I wish people would ask more about the thought process and inspiration behind the design. Understanding the narrative and the elements that contribute to the final outcome can provide deeper appreciation and insight into the work.
When I see a new great design or product, I think about the innovation and creativity behind it. I appreciate the attention to detail and the thought process that went into creating something unique and impactful.
My ideal design partner is someone who shares a passion for creativity and innovation, with a complementary skill set. I strongly believe in co-design, as collaboration brings diverse perspectives and ideas, leading to more holistic and innovative solutions.
My parents, who were both talented interior designers, have had a significant influence on my design philosophy. Additionally, collaborating with other professionals in the industry and engaging with clients has continuously shaped and refined my approach.
Books on design theory, architecture, and sustainability have had a profound impact on my work. Titles like “Design as Art” by Bruno Munari and “The Timeless Way of Building” by Christopher Alexander have been particularly influential.
Continuous learning and practical experience have been key to developing my skills. Engaging with other professionals, participating in design contests, and staying updated with industry trends have all contributed to my growth. Embracing challenges and learning from mistakes have also played a crucial role.
I would love to meet and discuss with Leonardo da Vinci. His genius in art, science, and design is unparalleled, and his ability to innovate across disciplines is incredibly inspiring.
I am grateful for the awards and recognition as they validate the hard work and creativity of my team and me. However, staying grounded and focused on delivering excellent design work is what truly matters. Fame should not overshadow the passion and dedication to the craft.
I have a deep appreciation for earthy tones that evoke a sense of calm and connection to nature. New York City is my favorite place, thanks to its vibrant culture and endless inspiration. I enjoy Mediterranean cuisine for its freshness and variety. Spring is my favorite season, as it symbolizes renewal and sparks creativity. My sketchbook is my most cherished possession, where initial ideas and concepts take shape. I also admire brands that prioritize sustainability and innovation, such as Patagonia.
In the early chapters of my career, I once tried to don multiple hats – advertiser, web designer, SEO expert, and project manager – all at once. It was a humorous and humbling misstep that taught me the importance of delegation and collaboration. Surrounding myself with seasoned professionals has been one of the best decisions I made.
Seeing a design come to life and witnessing the client’s joy and satisfaction makes my day great. I motivate myself by continuously seeking inspiration, learning new things, and embracing each project’s unique challenges and opportunities.
From a young age, I was fascinated by the transformative power of design. Growing up in a family of designers, it felt natural to pursue this path. My creativity and passion for aesthetics were evident early on, making it clear that design was my calling.
In a thousand years, I envision a future where design seamlessly integrates with nature and technology to create sustainable and adaptive environments. Spaces will be more personalized, responsive to individual needs, and contribute to overall well-being and harmony with the planet.
My work is driven by a genuine passion for creating spaces that enhance the quality of life and promote sustainability. Every project is an opportunity to tell a unique story through design, and I am committed to pushing the boundaries of innovation and creativity. Thank you for supporting and appreciating our work at Arsight.
Designer Interview
28 May 2024
Growing up in Ukraine, I was immersed in a world of design from a young age, with both my parents being interior designers. This creative environment fostered my fascination with aesthetics and the transformative power of spaces. My journey into interior design began in childhood, and by the age of 12, I knew I wanted to pursue this path. Over the past decade, my passion has taken me across the globe, enriching my understanding and approach to design through diverse international projects.
Arsight is an interior design studio based in New York City that I founded. We offer comprehensive, turn-key services, ensuring a seamless and efficient process from initial design concept to final styling. Our portfolio includes high-end residential and commercial spaces both nationally and internationally. Our work has been recognized in esteemed publications like The New York Times and Interior Design Magazine and in prestigious design competitions such as the SBID and NYCxDESIGN Awards.
Design is a symphony of aesthetics, functionality, and emotion. It's an ever-evolving narrative that reflects the essence of its inhabitants while harmonizing with its environment. It's not just about creating spaces; it's about curating experiences that resonate on a deeper, more personal level.
I am passionate about creating designs that are functional, personal, and timeless. Especially in interiors, the design should resonate with the client's lifestyle or a brand's ethos. I enjoy projects that challenge me to innovate and push the boundaries of traditional design, blending classic elements with modern, handcrafted pieces.
One of my favorite projects is a comprehensive renovation in Tribeca, NYC. This project drew inspiration from natural elements like stone, sand, and wood, creating a luxurious yet authentic and lived-in space. It resonated deeply with the client's desire for a unique and welcoming home, embodying our design philosophy of 'streamlined complexity.'
The first significant project I designed was a brownstone in Brooklyn. This project was special as it involved restoring a 140-year-old property, preserving its historic charm while integrating modern, energy-efficient technologies. This balance between preservation and innovation set the tone for my future projects.
I have a profound appreciation for natural materials like wood, stone, and clay. These materials bring a tactile, authentic quality to spaces. Additionally, I leverage advanced technologies such as augmented reality and AI-driven design to push the boundaries of creativity and precision in my work.
I feel the most creative when I am immersed in nature or exploring new cultures. The organic forms and patterns found in nature often spark innovative ideas. Similarly, the vibrant life and diverse architecture of cities like New York provide endless inspiration.
I focus on creating a balance between form and function. Every design must be aesthetically pleasing and serve its intended purpose efficiently. I also emphasize storytelling, ensuring that each space resonates with the client's personal journey and experiences.
Designing evokes a sense of excitement and curiosity in me. It is a process of discovery, where each project presents a new challenge and opportunity to innovate. There's also a profound sense of satisfaction in knowing that the spaces I create can significantly impact people's lives.
Seeing a design come to life and witnessing the client's reaction is immensely rewarding. It signifies the realization of a vision and the culmination of a collaborative effort. This moment often brings a mix of joy, pride, and fulfillment.
A successful design seamlessly integrates aesthetics and functionality. It should evoke an emotional response, creating a sense of belonging and comfort. Additionally, it should be timeless, transcending fleeting trends while staying true to the client's needs and aspirations.
The first aspects I consider are the balance between form and function and the emotional impact of the design. A good design should be both visually striking and highly functional, resonating with the user's lifestyle and preferences.
Designers have a responsibility to create sustainable and inclusive spaces. This means using eco-friendly materials, incorporating energy-efficient technologies, and designing spaces that are accessible and comfortable for everyone. Our work should contribute positively to the environment and society, promoting well-being and sustainability.
The design field is evolving towards sustainability, adaptability, and inclusivity. Future designs will focus on reducing environmental impact, creating adaptable spaces that cater to dynamic lifestyles, and ensuring accessibility for all. Technological advancements like augmented reality and AI will continue to revolutionize the way we conceptualize and execute designs.
My last exhibition was part of the NYCxDESIGN Awards showcase in New York City. I am currently planning my next exhibition, which will focus on sustainable design practices and is scheduled for early next year.
My design inspiration comes from various sources, including nature, art, history, and urban life. Traveling and experiencing different cultures also play a significant role in feeding my creativity. I constantly explore new ideas, attend design fairs, and engage with other creatives to stay inspired and informed.
My design style is best described as 'streamlined complexity,' which focuses on creating timeless designs that blend contrasting elements into cohesive and meaningful spaces. I explore this style to move away from fleeting trends, aiming for designs that tell a story and resonate deeply with clients' individual journeys. My approach is collaborative, starting with understanding the client's vision and evolving through continuous feedback and innovation.
I live in New York City, but my European roots significantly influence my design sensibility. The rich design heritage of Europe emphasizes craftsmanship, history, and authenticity, which I blend with the innovative and grand approach of American design. This fusion allows me to create spaces that are both timeless and avant-garde.
We work with companies by offering comprehensive design services that cover every aspect of a project, from conceptualization to final execution. Our process involves close collaboration with clients to understand their needs and preferences, ensuring that the final design aligns with their vision and goals.
Companies should look for designers who not only have a strong portfolio but also demonstrate a deep understanding of their brand and vision. It's important to find a designer who is collaborative, communicative, and flexible. Look for a track record of successful projects and client testimonials to ensure the designer can deliver on their promises.
My design process is inherently collaborative. It starts with an in-depth understanding of the client's vision and needs. From there, we create mood boards, sketches, and 3D visualizations, enabling the client to envision the final space. Continuous feedback loops and site visits ensure that the design evolves organically, marrying our expertise with the client's preferences. This iterative approach ensures that the final product is both innovative and personal.

A typical day starts with a morning meditation and a cup of coffee. I then review the day's schedule and head to the studio. My day involves a mix of client meetings, site visits, and collaborative sessions with my team. I spend time sketching and working on design concepts, followed by reviewing project progress and making necessary adjustments. Evenings are often reserved for personal relaxation or attending design events and exhibitions.
Stay curious and never stop learning. Our industry thrives on innovation, so constantly expose yourself to new ideas, cultures, and techniques. Find your unique voice and be true to it; authenticity resonates more than imitation. Listen to and learn from each space and client, and develop a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of how spaces can transform lives.
Positives include the ability to transform spaces and improve people's lives, the continuous opportunity for creative expression, and the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of the industry. Negatives can include the pressure to constantly innovate, the challenges of balancing client expectations with design integrity, and the demanding nature of project timelines.
Design with empathy and authenticity. Every space has a story waiting to be told; our job is to weave that narrative beautifully while staying true to the client's needs and aspirations.
Critical skills include creativity, attention to detail, strong communication, and project management. Additionally, technical proficiency with design software, a deep understanding of materials and construction methods, and the ability to empathize with clients' needs are crucial.
My toolbox includes design software like AutoCAD and SketchUp, project management tools, and visualization applications. I also rely on a vast library of design books and magazines for inspiration. Engaging with art, nature, and travel continuously feeds my creative process.
I manage my time by prioritizing tasks, setting clear deadlines, and using project management tools to track progress. Delegating responsibilities to my team and maintaining open communication channels ensures that projects stay on schedule without compromising quality.
The time required to design an object can vary widely depending on its complexity and scope. On average, a small project might take a few weeks, while larger, more intricate designs can take several months from concept to completion.
The most frequently asked question is, "How do you balance form and function in your designs?" Clients are often curious about how I create spaces that are both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional.
One of the most important job experiences was the comprehensive renovation of a Tribeca apartment. This project allowed me to apply my 'Urban Harmony' concept, which focuses on sustainability and the use of natural materials. The success of this project, both in terms of design and client satisfaction, was a pivotal moment in my career.
Our clients include a diverse range of individuals and businesses, from high-end residential homeowners to commercial establishments like hotels and restaurants. Notable clients include luxury developers like Green Lux Developments, with whom we have completed award-winning projects.
I enjoy designing spaces that challenge traditional conventions and push the boundaries of creativity. Projects that allow me to blend classic elements with modern, handcrafted pieces are particularly fulfilling, as they enable me to create unique, timeless designs.
My future plans include expanding Arsight's reach, exploring new markets, and continuing to innovate in sustainable and adaptive design. I am also looking forward to more collaborative projects that merge technology with traditional design principles.
While I lead the design vision, Arsight operates as a collaborative team. Each project benefits from the diverse expertise of our team members, ensuring a holistic and comprehensive approach to design.
We are currently working on an exciting project for a boutique hotel in Manhattan. This project focuses on creating a unique guest experience by blending luxurious comfort with sustainable design practices. We are using local materials and artisans to create an authentic, memorable space.
People can contact me through the Arsight website at arsight.co, where they can find our contact information and inquire about our services. Additionally, I am available on social media platforms like LinkedIn for professional connections.
I would like to emphasize the importance of continuous learning and adaptation in the field of design. The industry is ever-evolving, and staying abreast of new technologies, trends, and cultural shifts is crucial. Embracing change and innovation while staying true to one's design philosophy is key to long-term success.
