With over 30 years of experience in visual communication, I am the founder and creative director of ABC Design Communication, which I have led for the past 22 years. Our studio, based in Greece, specializes in branding, packaging, and print design, with a clear focus on creating work that combines strategic depth, visual impact and emotional resonance.
Throughout the years, we have collaborated with a wide range of clients - from major players in the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries to small producers and niche brands. Some of our most prominent collaborations include Frezyderm, Vian-Vianex, Metro supermarkets, OPTIMA (with brands such as Dirollo, Kerrygold, Adoro, and Ήπειρος), and Violanta.
Our work has received more than 85 international design awards, a recognition of our consistency, creativity, and strategic thinking. My passion for detail, storytelling and aesthetics - combined with my academic background in visual communication - continues to shape the philosophy behind everything we do: to craft design that inspires, stands out and leaves a lasting impression.

My passion for detail, storytelling and aesthetics - combined with my academic background in visual communication - continues to shape the philosophy behind everything we do: to craft design that inspires, stands out and leaves a lasting impression.
My love for design began very early - almost before I even knew what the word meant. As a child, I was drawn to aesthetics, composition, storytelling, and visual detail. Packaging, posters, book covers, magazines - I was fascinated not just by what I saw, but by the intention and thought behind it.
There wasn’t one specific person who pushed me into this world. It was more of an internal drive - a deep desire to create beautiful, well-designed things that carry meaning and purpose. That instinct naturally led me to study visual communication and graphic design and eventually to my first professional experience, where I realized design wasn’t just about beauty - it was a powerful tool to shape perception, convey values and elevate ideas or products.
From that point on, I knew this was my calling: to create design that is thoughtful, consistent and emotionally engaging. Every project is a new opportunity to tell a meaningful story through form, color and feeling.

From that point on, I knew this was my calling: to create design that is thoughtful, consistent and emotionally engaging. Every project is a new opportunity to tell a meaningful story through form, color and feeling.
In every project - no matter the scale or sector - I focus on three core pillars:
strategic thinking, storytelling and aesthetic harmony.
1.Strategic thinking is the foundation of all my work. I believe design must serve a purpose: to strengthen a brand’s identity, to stand out and to clearly communicate its values and offering.
2.Storytelling brings emotion and depth to the design. I see every project - even a food label - as a chance to tell a story. When this story is honest and well-crafted, it creates a real connection with the audience.
3.Aesthetic harmony is about proportion, composition, detail, how things “feel” visually. It’s not just about beauty; it’s about quality, consistency and integrity.
Although we fully embrace modern digital tools and 3D applications, my process often begins by hand - with sketches, loose layouts, or even physical experiments on paper. Especially in packaging, we build mock-ups, test materials and study how the object behaves in real space. Digital design is essential, but nothing replaces the value of holding and observing something tangible.
Every new project begins with questions. I research the product, the audience, and the client’s goals. What I care about is not just what I design, but why and how I can make it meaningful and effective.

Design for me is an emotional process. When I begin a new project, I feel excitement and curiosity, as if a new world is opening up in front of me, waiting to be explored and decoded. The moment of ideation, when everything is still possible, is one of the most thrilling stages for me.
As the process unfolds, I enter a state of focus and satisfaction. I find myself immersed in decisions, details, and visual structure, it becomes almost meditative. Every element matters. Every choice has intention. That quiet depth is something I truly love.
But the real joy comes when I see the final outcome, when I hold the packaging in my hands, or watch a brand identity come to life and express exactly what I envisioned. That’s when I feel a deep sense of fulfillment, pride, and happiness.
Design fulfills me because it allows me to transform thoughts into something tangible, meaningful, and beautiful. The pleasure lies in crafting something that not only works, but feels right, something that speaks, inspires, and lasts.

I believe design is not only about technique, it’s deeply shaped by how you think, observe and connect with people. Some of the most essential non-design skills for a designer are empathy, strategic thinking, organization, and storytelling.
For me, empathy has always been at the core of my process. It helps me understand what the client truly needs and how the design will emotionally resonate with its audience. Strategic thinking allows me to look beyond the visual surface, to consider business goals, market positioning, and long-term impact. And organization is what makes the difference in large-scale projects, where coordination between concept, materials, production, and deadlines is crucial.
I’ve also always had a strong connection to narrative. I see design as a form of storytelling, not just something beautiful, but something meaningful that speaks to memory, emotion, or purpose. This is deeply rooted in my love for observation, for words and for the poetry of everyday life.
My biggest influence hasn’t been a single person, but rather the world around me, lived experiences, human behavior, visual contrast, textures, scents, imperfections. My journey so far has been full of challenges, but also rewarding collaborations, international recognition, and endless creative energy.

My growth as a designer is deeply connected to the growth of ABC Design Communication. Since founding the studio, my aim has always been to create work that is not just visually appealing, but thoughtful and consistent in its essence. With every project, I evolve, creatively and personally.
Looking ahead, I want to continue expanding our presence internationally, working with brands that are bold, culturally grounded and seeking authentic, high-quality expression. But I don’t necessarily seek one “big goal”, because for me, every project, every collaboration is a milestone in itself.
What I truly aspire to is to remain in a constant state of creative curiosity, to keep being inspired and to inspire others. To keep designing with clarity, intention and truth. I want to keep building work that stands the test of time and brings something real to the world. If there’s one thing that defines me, it’s that I’m always growing and that journey is the most meaningful accomplishment of all.

The most meaningful advice I can give to a young designer is this:
have patience, resilience, and understand that creativity is a marathon, not a sprint.
I would especially caution new designers not to fall into the trap of seeking instant validation. Likes are not proof of value, and there are no shortcuts to success. What matters is depth, persistence, and the continuous work you do on yourself, not only technically, but also emotionally. Learn to listen to the client, to the market, to the times, but also know when to trust your own intuition.
Along the way, I’ve faced doubts, obstacles and periods of intense pressure. What helped me move forward was believing in the work, staying organized, and never stopping my own development, through seminars, travel and simply observing the world around me. Everything can become a lesson if you keep your eyes and your mind open.
The best advice I’ve ever received was:
“Design like it matters, because it does.”
That phrase has stayed with me ever since, and it still guides the way I create.

Success is not just the result of talent, it’s the result of discipline, clarity, and consistency.
Here’s what I would suggest to any professional designer, artist, or architect:
1.Know why you do what you do. Without a clear intention, design loses direction. The goal is not just to “look good,” but to have meaning, to serve a purpose and say something worth saying.
2.Never settle. Comfort is the enemy of growth. Even when you’ve found a style that “works,” challenge it. Push it. The best work often lives just outside your comfort zone.
3.Keep your message clear. Over-complication often signals insecurity. Truth is simple. And design that speaks with clarity is the kind that lasts.
A common mistake I see is over-focusing on being “technically correct” or trendy, rather than staying anchored in the core of communication. Design is not just tools or surface aesthetics, it is an act of intentional expression.
The best shortcut?
Work as if your most ideal audience is always watching.
And remember: there’s no big idea without courage. Everything else is just execution.

My day usually starts early, with a good coffee and a quiet moment before the creative energy of the day takes over. I often begin by immersing myself in visual stimuli, not necessarily design “news,” but imagery, trends, packaging inspiration, exhibitions, or browsing through curated portfolios. I like to feel the pulse of the moment, visually and emotionally.
The rest of the day moves at a steady rhythm: client meetings, strategic planning, presentations, team coordination, and, of course, actual design work. I’m quite structured in how I organize my time, but I always leave space for the unexpected, because some of the best ideas come unannounced.
What I love, even during the more routine or “boring” days, are the small sparks: a client who reacts with genuine excitement, a font that fits perfectly, a mock-up that finally feels alive. These are like little creative miracles. And the conversations with my team, when we share thoughts and build something together, are some of the brightest moments of my day.

I follow design trends, but I don’t obey them. I believe a designer should be aware but not dependent on what’s considered fashionable. Trends are helpful, they reflect the spirit of the time, the language of the audience, emerging materials and visual tendencies. But our role is not to replicate them. It’s to filter them through our own lens, and only integrate them when they truly serve the purpose of the project.
Personally, I draw inspiration from much more than trends, from art, architecture, poetry, nature, emotion, everyday moments, a street-side kiosk or a beautifully crafted product in a small international market. Inspiration doesn’t come from scrolling platforms, it comes from being present, observant, and open.
My goal is not to create design that is “on trend,” but to craft work that endures, that carries meaning and identity beyond the visuals. Timelessness, for me, is always more powerful than trendiness.

To me, good design is quiet and clear. It doesn’t try to impress, it simply works, communicates and touches something within you.
You recognize it when everything just feels “right,” even if you can’t explain exactly why, the form, the texture, the message, the atmosphere, they’re all in balance.
A well-designed piece, for me:
1.Serves its purpose. It’s not just beautiful, it’s functional, understandable, and meaningful.
2.Expresses identity. It couldn’t belong to anyone else, it feels fully aligned with the brand or audience.
3.Holds tension and balance. Between simplicity and character, instinct and strategy.
What I always look for is the intention behind the design. Without clear intent, the result lacks soul. Designs that chase trends or add visual noise for the sake of effect lose their essence.
One of the most common mistakes is overloading, trying to include every idea, every element, without clarity or hierarchy. Good design requires discipline and restraint.
If I had to summarize:
Good design doesn’t shout, it resonates.

Design, by nature, is a process that never truly ends. There’s always something that could be adjusted, refined, or reimagined. But in practice, you have to learn to let the design go at the right moment, not when it’s “perfect,” but when it has found its own internal balance.
I know a project is ready when it stands clearly in front of me, it communicates what it needs to, it has personality, it functions properly, and nothing essential is missing. If I were to add or remove something, I’d risk undoing what’s already been achieved.
I don’t keep “open tabs” in the sense of doubt. If something doesn’t feel resolved, I keep working. But when a design has a voice, a rhythm, and clarity, that’s when I let it go. That’s the moment of silence, when I have nothing more to say, and the design begins to speak for itself.
For me, success isn’t about perfection. It’s about connection, if the work resonates, communicates and leaves a mark, then it has done its job.

It’s hard and honestly, unnecessary to choose just one “biggest” project.
I am genuinely proud of every single project we’ve created, whether it’s a small label or a large-scale branding system. Each one carries its own story, intention, relationship, and decisions made with care.
Some projects gave me creative freedom, others taught me how to find solutions under pressure, and many reminded me of the power of simplicity. Each one shaped me and each one holds value.
For me, the greatest work is the journey itself: the fact that I get to create every day with consistency, love, and personal responsibility toward everything I sign my name to. And while that may sound simple, it’s perhaps the most demanding and the most meaningful accomplishment of all.

I find inspiration in different creators for different reasons and not only within the field of graphic design.
I deeply admire Dieter Rams, for his “less but better” philosophy and his devotion to functionality paired with aesthetic clarity. His view of design as a moral act has had a lasting influence on the way I approach my own work.
If I had the chance to speak with a designer from the past, it would be Massimo Vignelli, not just for his iconic visual language, but for the way he united architecture, typography, and product design into a cohesive system.
He once said: “If you can design one thing, you can design everything.” To me, that perfectly captures the essence of design thinking.
I also admire architects like Tadao Ando, for the quiet strength and spiritual clarity in his work and artists like Anselm Kiefer, for the materiality and emotional weight he brings into space.
In the end, I don’t focus so much on style, but rather on consistency, philosophy and honesty behind the work. That’s what I truly admire in a designer.

I live and work in Greece, a place where aesthetics, simplicity and balance are deeply embedded in the culture. The ever-changing light, the relationship with nature and material, the interplay of exterior and interior, these elements unconsciously inform my work. I don’t try to showcase them; they simply exist as an underlying layer in how I think, choose, and filter visuals.
Two cities that inspire me in very different ways are Singapore and New York.
Singapore impresses me with its structured complexity, its precise geometry, and the futuristic integration of nature within the urban fabric. It’s a city that balances the artificial and the organic with surprising elegance.
New York, on the other hand, is pure rhythm, tension, contrast, and information, a city that forces you to observe, absorb, and decide what to hold onto.
These cities, along with Athens, remind me that design is never neutral. It lives within life itself, in the energy, the noise, the contradictions, the chaos and harmony.
Music is always present, sometimes as rhythm, sometimes as atmosphere. I’ve developed entire projects starting from a single tone or emotional chord.
Right now, I’m working on new creative concepts for premium export products, where design becomes a bridge between cultural identity and contemporary global markets.
I strongly believe that good design quietly improves the world. It doesn’t transform society with noise, but through consistency, sensitivity, and meaning. Personally, design has taught me to live more consciously to observe, to simplify, to respect space and time.

My professional philosophy is rooted in consistency and respect toward the client, the project and the design process itself. I believe good design doesn’t come from chaos, but from structured dialogue and creative discipline.
I work with a team and a network of external collaborators, from designers and 3D artists to photographers and production specialists, all of whom share a common value system. I’m demanding but fair. I enjoy working with people who are responsible, precise, aesthetically aware, and emotionally balanced. Talent matters, but character, focus, and the ability to communicate clearly matter even more.
When I choose partners, I look for a shared sense of visual thinking and proportion, someone who can work freely, yet with structure. Someone who can filter, organize, and propose.
This profession comes with many challenges, from tight deadlines to the constant demand to deliver high-level design under varying conditions. My responsibilities include strategic thinking, creative direction, production oversight, and client communication, as well as ongoing decisions about the visual language and tone of each project.
I believe a good designer or artist doesn’t need to be explosive, but rather present, thoughtful, honest, and composed. Imagination is not just something to express; it’s something to cultivate.
Design is a responsibility, toward the audience, the material, and the moment in which it exists. And that responsibility should be carried with seriousness, but also with joy.

I deeply believe that design carries social responsibility, not just to beautify, but to activate, raise awareness and open space for dialogue. For me, design is a cultural tool that can operate quietly, yet powerfully, within society.
One project that fully embodies this philosophy is the printed piece "No Excuses", which I created in observance of November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. I wanted to design a print publication that doesn’t speak superficially about such a serious issue, but one that communicates with intensity, empathy and directness. Its recognition with an A’ Design Award affirmed for me that when design is honest and purposeful, it can truly make an impact.
I occasionally take on pro bono projects, especially when they relate to causes I care deeply about, culture, education, and support for marginalized groups. I don’t believe in design as a luxury. I believe in design that has a voice and a reason to exist.
I also actively support young designers through mentoring, conversation and creating room for their voices, both within my team and the broader creative community. I believe in trusting those who seek to grow with clarity and integrity. What I love about good design is that it doesn’t try to speak, it simply shows up. And says what needs to be said.

Participating in the A’ Design Award was an incredibly positive experience, not just for the recognition, but for the way it connects you to a global creative community. Through the competition, I discovered new studios, different design approaches, and, most importantly, I was reminded of the power of authentic and meaningful design.
For me, the three main benefits of taking part in design awards are:
1.Objective evaluation of your work, having your project assessed by seasoned professionals is a rare and valuable opportunity for growth.
2.Visibility and outreach, it opens new doors, gives your work a voice, and introduces you to new audiences and markets.
3.Reflection and clarity, the process forces you to pause, define your work, articulate your thinking, and view your own design with fresh perspective.
Design competitions are important and relevant, because they bring cultures together, create platforms for dialogue, and highlight diverse perspectives. They’re not just about accolades — they’re about connection, learning, and progress.
Being selected as Designer of the Day is both an honor and a joy. But more than that, it’s a reminder that with consistency and intention, every day can be a step forward, even through the smallest details.

The core principle behind our design is to create a visual experience that reflects how we want the consumer to feel when enjoying the product. The chosen design is both functional and practical, providing essential information about the contents and nutritional values of the smoothie, while also being aesthetically appealing to capture consumer interest. The use of alternative elements and colors gives a fresh approach to how the consumer perceives the product, offering a new sense of excitement and joy Consequently, the central idea behind our design is the combination of functionality and aesthetics to evoke an experience that will remain memorable for the consumer, encouraging them to return for more. By doing so, we aim to inspire baristas to create their smoothies with love and imagination, delivering a complete and delightful experience to the consumer.
My primary focus in designing this packaging was to create an appearance that would captivate consumers. To achieve this, I based the concept on an idea that generates an impressive and attractive visual. I decided to use the concept of engravings featuring six different cyclists enjoying the six flavors of Jean Paul Lab Smoothies. The imagery of cyclists cooling down and having fun provided an aesthetically appealing approach and created a striking image that piques consumer interest. Additionally, the use of stripes on the packaging added a dynamic play of movement and colors, drawing the eye and engaging the audience. Of course! Initially, I attended one of the best schools in Athens at the time, studying decoration, architectural design, and graphic design. I chose to specialize in graphic design. Throughout my studies, I worked as a graphic designer for various magazines, advertising agencies, and creative studios, where I gained valuable experience in graphic design and branding.

Later, I began taking on my first jobs as a freelance designer, working on various projects related to branding, logo design, and graphic materials. This gradually led me to start my own company.

This variety of products and clients motivates me to create something original and different each time. I don't have a specific type of design that I prefer to work on more; instead, I appreciate the flexibility to work across various categories and to create something unique with each project.
New designers need to demonstrate creativity, confidence, dedication, and continuous learning. Most importantly, the packaging must convey the product's message and communicate effectively with the consumer, making the type and use of the product clear. Additionally, innovation and creativity are key elements that can be assessed in a good design.

When I was a child, I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to become in the future. However, I was always fascinated by creativity and art. I would draw everywhere, even on the walls. I took painting classes from a very young age as well. These interests definitely hinted at my future passion for design. Over time, I developed my skills and decided to pursue a career in design when I realized how much I enjoyed creating and designing. So, while it may not have been obvious when I was a child, my love for design grew over the years and led me down this path.
It's incredibly difficult to predict what will happen 1,000 years from now, as the world evolves rapidly and many unpredictable changes can occur. However, I hope that with technological advancements and human progress, the world will become a better place for everyone. I envision a future where peace, solidarity, and sustainability prevail, and we have found ways to manage the challenges we face today, such as climate change and poverty. Additionally, I hope technology will enable us to explore new worlds and uncover new secrets of the universe. Regardless of what the future holds, it is crucial to remember the importance of governance, justice, and solidarity as we move forward.

For me, design is about creating functional and aesthetically appealing solutions that meet people's needs. It represents a mode of expression and creation that blends technique with art to produce products, services, or experiences that are useful, enjoyable, and user-friendly.
We enjoy designing products that are innovative, creative, and truly represent the values and personality of the companies we work with. We are always on the lookout for new ways to stand out and express our uniqueness through design and creativity. We want our work to reflect our character and evoke interest and emotion in our clients. The opportunity to create something unique and impactful is a constant source of inspiration and joy for us.
My favorite design project to date is the packaging for the oral hygiene product line for Frezyderm. The innovation of the container and its contents needed to be complemented by innovative packaging to differentiate the series from the competition. The cutting-edge and modern technique of printing with glitter in different colors helps the products stand out from each other. This glitter printing technique had to be applied not only to the cardboard box but also to the plastic container. After a series of tests, techniques, and inks, we achieved the desired result for the Toothpaste series, creating a harmonious look and a distinct identity. The modern, simple, and clean design reflects the product's quality with a pioneering printing technique that uses real glitter on both the box and the plastic container. This work earned us our first award and paved the way for a very exciting and interesting journey.
The Intim Area Foam by Frezyderm is a gentle cleansing foam for the sensitive area, helping to maintain hygiene and the balance of the natural pH. When designing the Intim Area Foam, our goal was to highlight the exceptional user experience and the care it provides to women. The successful design of this product in 2001 has led to a long-standing and fruitful collaboration with the company that continues to this day.
My favorite material for creating packaging is paper. I believe paper is a versatile material that can be adapted to various shapes and sizes, allowing us to achieve a more impressive and refined result. With paper, we can create designs with different effects, add embossing or foil stamping, use spot UV, and incorporate various materials to give our packaging a high-quality feel. Additionally, paper is sustainable and recyclable, making it an environmentally friendly choice for packaging creation.
I feel most creative when I am in an inspiring environment and have free time to dedicate to creation. Music, nature, and the sea also help boost my creativity. Additionally, collaborating and engaging in dialogue with other creative individuals encourages and enhances my creative spirit.
During the design process of new packaging, we focus on various aspects to ensure it is functional, aesthetically appealing, and practical for the end consumer. Sustainability is also a crucial factor we consider. We think about using sustainable materials and minimizing excess packaging to reduce environmental impact.
Excitement, creativity, joy, anticipation, and satisfaction. Designing a new package represents an opportunity to express creativity and innovation, and to create something new and unique.
When my designs come to life, I feel immense joy, satisfaction, and excitement. Seeing something I envisioned and created successfully realized, fills me with pride—for myself, my team, and the collective effort we put into creating something new.

Every design should be meticulously crafted, considering the goals and needs for which it was created. A good design must be clear and logically structured. If a design meets these criteria and achieves its objectives, it is deemed successful. Conversely, a design is considered poor if it does not align with the project's needs and expectations and fails to accomplish its goals.
The responsibilities of a designer towards society and the environment when creating packaging are paramount. During the design process, a designer must consider environmental sustainability, waste reduction, and recycling, as well as the sustainable use of resources. Additionally, the designer should ensure consumer safety and protection, guarantee product protection during transportation and storage, and provide clear information and recognition for the consumer.
Moreover, the designer must consider the social impacts of the packaging, such as fairness and its effects on consumer health and well-being. Therefore, packaging design should adhere to the principles of sustainable development and social responsibility, ensuring optimal resource use and the protection of both the environment and society.

I live in Athens, Greece. The cultural heritage of my country has certainly influenced my designs to some extent. The architecture, art, mythology, and philosophy of ancient Greece are sources of inspiration that shape my worldview and approach to design.
The advantages of designing in Greece are the multifaceted influences I receive from the country's rich cultural heritage. From ancient Greek architectural styles and geometric order to modern trends in contemporary Greek aesthetics, there are numerous elements that can be integrated into my designs.
However, there are some disadvantages to designing in Greece. The smaller scale of production sometimes limits our ability to create items that require large quantities to cover initial production costs. Additionally, bureaucracy and slow approval processes can delay the implementation of a design.
Overall, though, the cultural heritage of Greece is a valuable source of inspiration, strengthening my approach and activities as a designer.

My day starts early in the morning with meditation. After that, I get ready for work and enjoy my coffee while reading the latest news and reviewing the day's schedule and projects.
I meet with my team to discuss updates and plans for the day. Throughout the day, I am responsible for communicating with clients and coordinating with print partners to ensure a smooth workflow.
As the head of an advertising agency, I need to be creative, and organized, and manage my time effectively. My work also requires close collaboration with my colleagues and responsiveness to clients' needs.
At the end of the day, I usually evaluate the outcomes of my work and prepare for the next day. Although my job is demanding, my passion for advertising keeps me enthusiastic and creative every day.

Make sure to focus on developing your own unique style rather than copying others. Push the boundaries and experiment with new ideas and techniques. Above all, don't let failure hold you back—every setback is an opportunity for learning and growth. Finally, remember that continuous practice and persistence are key to achieving success in the field of design.
The positives of being a designer include the creativity and flexibility required to create something new and unique every day. Each client, project, and a new task is different. Additionally, the ability to express your ideas through design and the constant search for new ideas and approaches make every day unique for me.
However, some drawbacks of being a designer can be the pressure to meet client demands and the stress of staying within their timelines. Innovating within specific time constraints is not something everyone can handle.

The golden rule I follow in design is simplicity and functionality. I believe that good design should be clean, readable, user-friendly, and serve its purpose without unnecessary additions. A minimalist approach can often be far more effective and appealing than an overloaded and excessive design.

Grand Interview
13 June 2026 · Smoothies Food Branding
The innovative choice of illustrating cyclists on the smoothie packaging stems from a creative concept that blends elements of tradition, dynamism, and a connection to nature. This idea emerged after extensive research into the values represented by the product: health, movement, and sustainable living. The process began with analyzing the target audience, who seeks products that combine quality and imagination. We then explored the cultural dimension of the bicycle image as a symbol of freedom and environmental awareness. Additionally, we merged historical nostalgia with modern design by using vintage cyclists to create a unique visual code that stands out from the usual fruit images seen on packaging. Combining retro aesthetics with the vibrant color of each flavor brings energy and appeal. The choice of cyclists is not only unconventional but serves as a narrative bridge that strengthens the consumer's connection to the product's values.
The choice of vintage aesthetics and 1930s-inspired typography for the smoothie packaging was based on the desire to create a connection between the past and modern life. The 1930s was marked by elegance, innovation, and optimism—qualities that reflect the brand's values of freedom, enjoyment, and a refreshing experience. Inspiration came from an era when cycling began to symbolize personal independence and the exploration of the world. This symbolic aspect of cycling was integrated into the packaging, serving as a metaphor for the vitality and freshness the product offers. The vintage graphic approach, with its bold lines and refined typography, underscores the handmade quality of the product and gives it a unique sense of intimacy. This artistic direction strengthens the brand's message, inviting consumers to enjoy life's simple pleasures, such as a bike ride or a natural smoothie, while highlighting a timeless lifestyle that blends tradition with modern values.
The challenge of making the smoothie packaging immediately visible and attractive in food service spaces like bars and cafes was addressed through the use of illustrations in engraving style and strategic color choices. The engraving-style details lend a premium, handcrafted feel to the packaging, which grabs attention in environments where visual "noise" is often present. This technique, inspired by classic illustration methods, creates a sense of authenticity and quality, making it stand out from more monotonous or typical commercial packaging. The result is a design that suggests artistic craftsmanship and immediately leaves a positive impression. At the same time, the strategically chosen vibrant colors—such as yellow, pink, and green—not only differentiate the flavors but also act as visual markers, helping the packaging stand out even from a distance. The combination of a black background with striking color elements creates a strong contrast, enhancing visibility on shelves or counters with drinks. These design choices strengthen the packaging’s ability to catch the consumer’s eye in busy spaces and impress, while also emphasizing the product's unique character and quality.
The recognition by the A' Design Award is a significant confirmation of the creative and innovative approach behind the smoothie packaging. The project evolved through a dynamic collaboration with ABC Design Communication, combining strategic thinking, creativity, and technical expertise. The process began with a thorough market analysis and recognition of the need for a packaging that was not only visually appealing but also expressed the brand’s philosophy—freedom, enjoyment, and quality. At this stage, the teams worked closely to define the core message and creative vision of the project. From the initial idea, inspired by vintage aesthetics and the symbolism of cycling, we experimented with engraving-style illustrations and bold color choices. ABC Design Communication played a crucial role in translating this idea into practical design solutions, offering specialized knowledge in illustration, typography, and printing materials. Throughout the project, there was continuous feedback and testing. Special attention was given to color choices that combine vibrancy and clarity, as well as developing a design that communicates both the premium quality of the product and its playful personality. The final result reflects the harmony between creative originality and strategic thinking. The A' Design Award recognition demonstrates the strength of our collaboration and how the fusion of art and commercial design can lead to exceptional results.
The development of the six distinct cycling figures on the smoothie packaging was based on a strategic process that balanced the individuality of each character with the coherence of the brand identity. The idea was to create a visual story where each figure represented a distinct flavor, while maintaining a clear connection between them. The process began with researching the portrayal of cycling in different styles and periods to convey the sense of travel, exploration, and joy associated with the smoothie consumption experience. We chose a vintage aesthetic, based on engraving-style illustrations, to create characters that are dynamic, nostalgic, and elegant. To ensure the individuality of each character, we combined unique poses and features, inspired by different types of cycling—such as casual rides, competitive cycling, or urban commuting. At the same time, each figure was integrated into a background corresponding to the color and mood of the specific flavor (e.g., vibrant green for mango, bright pink for pomegranate). Coherence was ensured through recurring design elements, such as the style of lines, common typography, and symmetry in composition, as well as through the black background that provides a neutral base for the vibrant shades. This consistency supports the brand identity, creating a timeless series that is immediately recognizable. The result is a collection that tells a unified story of freedom, enjoyment, and authenticity, while each character contributes to the uniqueness of the product experience.
The 110 × 160 mm label format imposed a compact, vertically oriented canvas that required very deliberate decisions around composition, hierarchy, and visual economy. Rather than treating the constraint as a limitation, it became a structuring device that sharpened the branding expression. Here’s how it influenced the creative decisions:1. Composition: Vertical Rhythm & FramingThe narrow aspect ratio encouraged a strong vertical flow, which aligned well with the idea of freshness and natural movement associated with smoothies. Elements were stacked intentionally to guide the eye top-to-bottom:Brand mark positioned high to establish immediate recognitionProduct name centered as the visual anchorSupporting information (flavor, functional benefits) pushed lower and visually lighterThis avoided horizontal clutter and maintained clarity at arm’s length on shelf.2. Visual Hierarchy: Ruthless PrioritizationThe limited surface area forced a clear distinction between essential vs. secondary information. Only what actively supported brand recognition and purchase decision-making earned visual weight.Typography scale did most of the hierarchy work instead of decorative elementsContrast (size, weight, color) was preferred over additional graphic assetsSecondary copy was deliberately subdued to preserve breathing spaceThis ensured fast readability in a retail context where labels are scanned, not read.3. Graphic Restraint & White SpaceBecause overcrowding was the main risk, negative space became a key design tool. The constraints encouraged:Fewer, bolder graphic gesturesSimplified illustration or color blocking rather than complex imageryClear margins to prevent visual fatigue on such a small formatThis restraint elevated the perceived quality of the brand.4. Scalability & Production AwarenessWorking within 110 × 160 mm also meant anticipating real-world conditions:Legibility at small sizesPrint tolerances and edge safetyConsistency across flavor variants without redesigning the entire systemAs a result, the design system was built to be modular and repeatable, not bespoke for a single SKU.5. Conceptual AlignmentFinally, the constraint reinforced the brand idea itself: simple, honest, ingredient-led nutrition. The pared-back layout visually echoed the product promise—nothing excessive, nothing artificial. In short:The size limitation didn’t just influence layout; it disciplined the brand language, leading to clearer hierarchy, stronger focus, and a more confident, contemporary label presence.
The striped design elements on the smoothie packaging were chosen to create a sense of movement and flow, reinforcing the connection to the values of freedom and mobility represented by the brand. The lines are not merely decorative but serve as a dynamic element that brings life to the overall visual composition. The idea behind the striped design is to evoke the continuous motion of bicycle wheels, emphasizing action and a constant forward motion. This sense of “flow” mirrors the energy and agility we want to communicate through the product, as well as the physical vitality offered by a smoothie. The striped design also acts as a bridge between the different elements of the packaging—the cycling figures, the bold colors, and the black background. It creates a unified structure that ensures the packaging is visually harmonious while also reinforcing the brand’s dynamic message. Overall, the choice of the striped design serves not only aesthetic purposes but also carries symbolic weight, highlighting the idea of freedom, energy, and enjoyment associated with consuming a natural smoothie. This movement translates into a narrative that invites the consumer to "run," "explore," and enjoy the moment.
The success of the Smoothie Food Packaging highlighted the power of visual design in shaping consumer behavior. The emotional connection created through the vintage aesthetic and dynamic illustrations, the visual differentiation with bold colors and black background, and the sense of quality conveyed by the engraving style, all contributed significantly to its success. The narrative of freedom and mobility, combined with the practicality and recognizability of the packaging, enhanced demand, confirming that design can transform a wholesale product into a consumer item.
To balance the emotional approach and humor with the professional character of the packaging, we approached the design with a strategy that combines fun with reliability. The humorous elements, such as the cycling figures and dynamic style, offer a playful feeling that appeals to both consumers and baristas, creating a positive and attractive image. However, to maintain professionalism in the B2B market, we incorporated more subtle elements, such as clean and elegant typography, strong lines, and a carefully chosen color palette. The use of the black background and vintage aesthetic reinforces the sense of quality and reliability, which is crucial in the professional market. Thus, we achieved a strong composition that reflects the brand’s values without sacrificing the professional tone.
The Smoothie Food Packaging is expected to influence future beverage packaging trends in the Greek market by reinforcing the trend of consumers seeking products that tell stories and connect with them emotionally. The key element of this packaging—the creation of an engaging visual story through the cycling figures and vintage design—highlights the power of storytelling as a means of differentiation in the saturated world of packaging. We anticipate more packaging designs that will use these tools to strengthen the emotional connection with consumers, creating products that stand out not only for their quality but also for their authenticity.

13 June 2026 · Espresso Coffee Branding
The strategic color coding in the branding of Sottos Family Espresso Coffee packaging emerged from a combined analysis of the aesthetic demands of the coffee industry and consumer psychology to create a strong visual language that appeals to both industry professionals and consumers. The dominant black color serves as the foundation of the design, emitting a sense of quality, elegance, and power, and is ideal for conveying the strictness and tradition of espresso. The choice of complementary colors—blue, red, and orange—was based on psychological characteristics that enhance consumer experiences and strengthen the recognition of each coffee type.• Blue (Linea Blue): Blue is associated with calmness and seriousness. It is the color of trust and quality, which matches the need of coffee professionals for products that promote stability and reliable quality. The use of blue in Espresso Blue creates a sense of freshness and purity.• Red (Linea Rossa): Red is a dynamic color that activates action and energy. In the case of espresso, red reflects the intensity and strength of the coffee, providing a sense of passion and bold flavor often characteristic of espresso. Additionally, red is a color that grabs attention and ensures immediate recognition.• Orange (Linea Crema): Orange combines the warmth of red with the pleasant feeling of yellow, evoking positive emotions and excitement. It is the color of friendliness and creativity, giving the Crema series a softer yet equally intriguing sense, associated with the flavor and creamy texture of the coffee. This color coding strategy was based on extensive consumer preference research to create a series that is both aesthetically pleasing and psychologically attractive to coffee professionals. The black color acts as a neutral base, allowing the other colors to stand out, while the strong contrast enhances the design’s dynamics and facilitates recognition of each coffee type.
The artistic interpretation depicted in the linear pattern of the espresso cup with the aroma diffusion stemmed from the desire to capture the coffee-making process in a way that incorporates both the product experience and the history of the Sottos family, which has 50 years of experience in coffee production and packaging. The espresso cup is the starting point for consuming the coffee, and its depiction with the aroma "bursting" from the top is a visual representation of the experience Sottos coffee offers: an experience that starts with preparation, emerges through the aroma, and culminates in the enjoyment of taste. The aroma diffusion pattern acts as a symbolic element linking coffee with the sensory and quality experience, embodying the excellence and tradition the Sottos family has in the coffee industry. The linear design with aroma diffusion is not just an artistic rendering but also highlights the philosophy behind the product. The creation of the emblem exudes a sense of movement and flow, alluding to the dynamic and ongoing development of the family business over the decades. At the same time, the aroma shape refers to the importance of innovation and evolution in branding, combining the company’s long-standing expertise with a desire for continuous renewal and creation of experiences that impress. This specific artistic interpretation aligns with the fifty-year heritage of the Sottos family, which blends expertise with progress and innovation. Just as Sottos coffee has evolved and adapted to market needs, the logo reflects the dynamic journey of coffee from production to consumption, respecting tradition while looking to the future.
The challenge of breaking the stereotype that wholesale products must remain invisible to consumers, while simultaneously meeting the demands of coffee professionals for a strong shelf presence, was solved through strategic design. We created dynamic branding for the Linea Blue, Linea Rossa, and Linea Crema series that combines product quality with market visibility. The color coding and logo, which depicts the aroma of the coffee, provide distinct differentiations for each series, enhancing recognition and differentiation. The packaging is designed to stand out and easily be displayed in the competitive foodservice sector. The branding strengthens the emotional connection with the consumer and the sense of quality, while also ensuring a professional image for coffee professionals.
Winning the Iron A' Design Award is recognition of creating a packaging system that manages to stand out in a competitive market. The design was based on thorough market research, ensuring the product would attract attention on the shelf, while the dynamic color palette (orange, red, blue) enhances the brand’s recognition. The abstract logo, inspired by a coffee bean, and the clean lines reflect a modern aesthetic. The packaging combines functionality and elegance, offering durability and preserving the freshness of the coffee, while also standing out with its minimalist design. At the same time, emphasis was placed on using environmentally friendly materials. In a saturated market, the packaging focuses on the uniqueness of the product, blending traditional values with modern aesthetics to create an emotional connection with the consumer. The result is branding that enhances the product identity and stands out internationally.
The repetition of the pattern in the branding of Sottos Family Espresso Coffee contributes to creating a cohesive and recognizable identity. The geometric pattern is abstract and flexible, allowing for future brand extensions without losing connection to the core identity. The color differentiation between the series (orange, red, blue) enhances recognition and facilitates the addition of new products. The pattern, besides being applied to packaging, can also be adapted for promotional activities, maintaining consistency and flexibility in the branding. Thus, the branding of Sottos Family Espresso Coffee remains both functional and attractive, providing a solid foundation for the further development of the brand into new products and markets.
The dimensions of the metal bag (155mm x 325mm) were selected based on the ideal balance between functionality and aesthetics. The height and width ensure the coffee’s freshness is preserved, facilitate storage and display on shelves, and provide enough space to highlight the branding. Ergonomics, product protection, and visual impact were central factors, making the packaging both practical and visually striking.
The three-year development arc (2019–2022) was less about slow execution and more about intentional maturation—allowing the Espresso Coffee brand to evolve alongside market realities, consumer behavior, and the brand’s own self-definition. Each phase contributed a necessary layer to the final solution.Below is a clear breakdown of the key evolutionary stages:Phase 1 (2019): Foundation & Identity ExplorationFocus: Defining purpose before formThe early stage was devoted to understanding what the brand should stand for in a saturated Athenian coffee landscape.Extensive benchmarking of local and international espresso brandsExploration of positioning tensions:specialty vs. accessibilityritual vs. speedtradition vs. contemporary cultureEarly visual experiments ranged from expressive, artisanal aesthetics to stripped-back modernismOutcome:A clear realization that differentiation would not come from trend-led specialty cues, but from a timeless, confident identity rooted in everyday espresso culture.Phase 2 (2020): System Reduction & Conceptual ClarityFocus: Removing rather than addingThis phase coincided with broader cultural shifts (pandemic-era reassessment), which influenced both tone and strategy.Visual language was deliberately reducedDecorative elements and over-stylization were stripped awayTypography became the primary brand voiceThe idea of espresso as a daily constant—not a luxury—was formalizedOutcome:A conceptual pivot toward functional elegance: branding that feels calm, reliable, and grounded, rather than performative.Phase 3 (2021): Context Testing & Real-World StressFocus: Adaptability and longevityThe identity was tested across:Packaging formatsIn-store applicationsTakeaway cups and secondary touchpointsDigital and physical coexistenceKey questions driving this stage:Does the system remain recognizable when reduced to a single color? Can it scale from micro applications to architectural ones?Does it age well, or does it feel tied to a moment?Outcome:A modular visual system emerged—flexible but unmistakably consistent—capable of evolving without rebranding.Phase 4 (2022): Refinement & Final ArticulationFocus: Precision and restraintThe final year was about micro-decisions:Fine-tuning typographic proportionsAdjusting spacing and hierarchyLocking color relationships and material choicesEnsuring the brand felt inevitable, not designedNothing new was introduced—everything was clarified.Outcome:A mature, confident Espresso Coffee brand that communicates:Consistency over noveltySubstance over storytellingTrust over spectacleWhy the Timeline MattersThe extended timeline allowed the brand to:Avoid trend dependencyAbsorb cultural and market shiftsBe stress-tested rather than rushedArrive at a solution that feels settled, not reactiveIn essence:The final design is the result of accumulated decisions, not a single creative leap. Each stage narrowed the focus, strengthened the logic, and ensured the brand could live comfortably in Athens—not just launch there.
The Espresso Coffee Branding reflects a deliberate response to regional materials, production realities, and local market behavior, and these factors played a central role in shaping both material selection and brand positioning.Material Strategy: Designing Within Local RealitiesFrom the outset, material decisions were informed by what is readily available, reliable, and culturally familiar in the Greek production landscape.Preference was given to locally sourced, uncoated paper stocks that communicate honesty and tactility while remaining cost-efficient and scalable.Finishes and inks were selected with durability in mind, acknowledging the high-touch, everyday nature of espresso packaging.Avoiding exotic or imported materials ensured consistency over time and protected the brand from supply volatility. This approach allowed the brand to feel premium through restraint and precision, rather than through excess.Brand Positioning: Local Confidence Over Trend AlignmentThe brand was positioned to resonate with the Athenian espresso culture, which values familiarity, routine, and trust over performative storytelling.Instead of mirroring international specialty-coffee aesthetics, the identity embraces functional elegance and visual clarity. The design language favors stability and recognizability, supporting repeat consumption rather than momentary attention. The result is a brand that feels contemporary yet deeply embedded in its regional context.Strategic Balance: Ambition Meets PracticalityA key driver of the final solution was the continuous balance between design ambition and market realism.Every material and visual choice was evaluated not only aesthetically, but also through production, cost, and longevity criteria.Constraints were treated as strategic inputs, shaping a system that is robust rather than decorative.Long-Term PerspectiveThis locally informed approach ensured the brand could scale and evolve without losing coherence, remaining relevant beyond short-lived trends and adaptable across multiple applications. In essence, the Espresso Coffee Branding demonstrates how regional awareness—of materials, production, and consumer behavior—can elevate brand positioning, resulting in an identity that feels grounded, confident, and enduring.
The visual identity of Espresso Coffee was designed to reflect the essence of the coffee itself: warmth, quality, and enjoyment. Our aesthetic was inspired by the key characteristics of coffee, such as intensity, variety, and tradition. The color choices – deep red, blue, and orange – represent different flavors and intensities, giving identity to each product. At the same time, the circular pattern symbolizes steam, warmth, and the brewing process, while the central depiction resembles a coffee bean or cup, enhancing the connection with the product.Furthermore, the minimalist and clean design approach reflects the high quality of the coffee while ensuring modern aesthetics and timelessness, referring to the authenticity and luxury associated with espresso. All design choices aimed to capture the uniqueness of the coffee and create an experience that starts with the packaging and ends with the taste.
The success of Espresso Coffee branding paves the way for a flexible evolution of the design system, always aiming to meet market changes and modern demands while maintaining its recognizable identity. In the future, the visual identity expansion could include the introduction of new color codes or patterns representing innovative flavors or special product lines, such as premium options, organic blends, or products with specific geographic origins. The circular pattern, as the brand’s signature, can evolve to adapt to different applications, such as packaging for large professional coffee systems or promotional materials. The branding may also adapt for greater sustainability, with a focus on environmentally friendly materials, maintaining the brand's modern and responsible image. Thus, the design system of Espresso Coffee is prepared to evolve in a way that keeps it competitive, relevant, and recognizable in a professional and demanding environment while maintaining its connection.
Grand Interview
22 October 2025 · Coffee Wave Food Bag
Our creative journey for the Coffee Wave Food Bag began with the ambition to break conventional packaging norms and captivate younger audiences through an unexpected, visually arresting narrative. We embraced a surrealistic, steampunk-inspired aesthetic that combines retrofuturistic elements with bold modern design to evoke both curiosity and wonder. The concept originated from the idea of transforming the packaging into a storytelling canvas. We wanted every detail—the central human-machine figure, the intricate gears and pipes, the abstract shapes—to symbolize the fusion of human ingenuity and artistic imagination, mirroring the richness and complexity of the coffee inside. The design process involved extensive research into consumer behaviour and preferences, leading us to develop a collage approach that seamlessly integrates disparate elements. One of our key challenges was harmoniously combining these diverse visuals to create a cohesive and compelling narrative without losing clarity or impact. We addressed this by carefully orchestrating the composition and using bold colour blocking alongside black and white elements to ensure strong contrast and visual engagement.Ultimately, Coffee Wave’s packaging became more than just a container; it became an invitation to explore, decode, and connect with the brand on a deeper, more imaginative level.
The combination of industrial motifs like gears, pipes, and abstract shapes was inspired by our desire to create a packaging design that celebrates both artistic imagination and engineered precision. We were drawn to the retrofuturistic and steampunk aesthetic because it offers a rich visual language that feels inventive, layered, and evocative of stories yet to be told. For Coffee Wave, we wanted the packaging to mirror the complexity and richness of the coffee itself—a product crafted with care, tradition, and technical know-how. The gears and pipes serve as metaphors for the meticulous processes involved in coffee roasting and preparation, while the abstract shapes introduce an artistic, almost dreamlike quality that encourages curiosity and exploration. This fusion is central to our brand identity. ABC Design Communication thrives on pushing creative boundaries and telling meaningful stories through design. By uniting industrial elements with imaginative illustration, we crafted a visual narrative that invites consumers to decode and connect with the brand on a deeper level, setting Coffee Wave apart as a bold, innovative choice in a competitive market.
Addressing the technical challenge of combining metallic elements, white layers, and glossy spot UV finishes required careful planning and close collaboration with our production partners. Our primary goal was to achieve striking visual contrast and layered richness while ensuring that the packaging remained fully functional, durable, and protective of the coffee inside. We began by selecting high-quality flexible materials that could support advanced printing techniques without compromising structural integrity. The white layers served as essential underprints to make colours and metallic accents pop with maximum clarity, even on darker backgrounds. Meanwhile, the metallic inks and spot UV applications were strategically placed to highlight specific design elements like the gears, pipes, and central figure, creating depth and an engaging play of light and texture.Throughout the process, we conducted multiple material tests and print trials to fine-tune opacity, adhesion, and tactile quality. Balancing visual drama with usability was critical: the final solution preserved the packaging’s ease of storage, resealability for freshness, and premium tactile appeal. Ultimately, this technical rigor allowed us to bring the intricate, surrealistic steampunk narrative to life in a way that felt both luxurious and practical.
Our decision to pursue an avant-garde, surrealistic aesthetic for Coffee Wave was strongly guided by in-depth market research and consumer insights. We identified a growing segment of younger coffee drinkers who are not just seeking quality products, but also meaningful brand experiences that resonate with their values and aesthetics.Through surveys, focus groups, and competitor analysis, we learned that much of the coffee packaging landscape was highly traditional, conservative, and predictable. While this worked for established brands, it left an opportunity to differentiate by embracing bold, artistic storytelling that would capture attention and spark conversation.Younger consumers value authenticity, creativity, and designs that invite exploration. By developing a packaging narrative filled with layered visuals, unexpected elements, and a tactile premium feel, we aimed to engage them on multiple sensory levels. This approach turned Coffee Wave from a simple product into an experience—one that encouraged curiosity, loyalty, and brand affinity among a demographic eager for something new and inspiring.
The specific dimensions of the Coffee Wave Food Bag—98mm x 60mm x 180mm—played a crucial role in shaping our design approach, especially regarding element placement and visual hierarchy. The relatively tall, narrow form factor lent itself naturally to a vertical storytelling layout, allowing us to guide the consumer’s gaze from top to bottom in a deliberate, engaging sequence. We used the central human-machine figure as a strong vertical anchor that immediately captures attention and establishes narrative flow. Surrounding elements such as gears, pipes, and abstract shapes were carefully scaled and positioned to maintain balance and avoid overcrowding within the limited width. This ensured that every detail remained legible and visually impactful, even when viewed on a crowded retail shelf.Colour blocking and contrast played a critical role in defining distinct zones and creating a clear hierarchy. Essential branding and product information were thoughtfully integrated to maintain both aesthetic cohesion and functional clarity. By embracing the bag’s dimensions as a design constraint, we transformed it into an opportunity to deliver a cohesive, immersive visual narrative that stands out while remaining practical and user-friendly.
The Coffee Wave Food Bag’s design journey from April 2022 to November 2023 unfolded through a series of distinct yet interconnected stages that gradually refined our vision into a cohesive, compelling final composition. We began with extensive market research to understand consumer behaviour, preferences, and gaps in the existing coffee packaging landscape. This insight guided our strategic decision to pursue a bold, avant-garde aesthetic aimed at younger, design-conscious audiences.Concept development followed, where we explored the fusion of surrealistic and steampunk elements to craft a retrofuturistic narrative that would spark curiosity and engagement. Iterative sketching and digital prototyping allowed us to experiment with compositions, balancing intricate details like gears and pipes with clean, modern colour blocking.Material selection and finish testing formed another critical phase. We collaborated closely with production partners to ensure that metallic inks, white layers, and spot UV elements worked seamlessly while maintaining the bag’s functional integrity. Multiple print trials helped us refine opacity, adhesion, and tactile quality. The final stages focused on harmonizing all elements—visual storytelling, functional design, brand messaging, and user experience—to deliver packaging that stood out on shelves while inviting consumers to discover and connect with the Coffee Wave brand on a deeper level.
The tactile experience of the Coffee Wave Food Bag was an integral part of our design strategy, intentionally developed to complement and deepen the visual storytelling. While the surrealistic, steampunk-inspired visuals engage the eye with intricate, layered narratives, the smooth-touch exterior adds an immediate sense of premium quality and sensory delight the moment a customer picks up the bag. This tactile element reinforces the brand’s commitment to detail and craftsmanship, mirroring the mechanical precision suggested by the gears and pipes in the artwork. It transforms the packaging from a static object into an interactive experience, where touch and sight work in tandem to communicate sophistication and care. The sealing mechanism further supports this narrative by ensuring product freshness while enhancing usability. It reflects the same industrial, engineered sensibility conveyed visually, creating a cohesive brand story that is not only seen but also felt. By harmonizing tactile and visual elements, we aimed to create a holistic, immersive experience that elevates the perception of the Coffee Wave brand.
Balancing visual disruption and originality with practical packaging requirements was one of the central challenges of the Coffee Wave project. We wanted the design to stand out boldly on the shelf, using surrealistic, steampunk-inspired visuals to create curiosity and a memorable brand story. At the same time, we recognized the need to deliver essential functional benefits that consumers expect from quality coffee packaging. To achieve this balance, we approached the design as a layered system. The collage-like visuals were meticulously organized with clear hierarchy and deliberate spacing to avoid clutter and maintain legibility for key information such as product details and branding. We used bold colour blocking to define zones and guide the eye naturally across the packaging. On the technical side, we selected high-quality flexible materials that ensured durability and ease of storage while integrating a reliable sealing mechanism to preserve freshness. We also conducted multiple print trials to test finishes like metallic inks and spot UV to ensure that they enhanced, rather than overwhelmed, the design. Ultimately, our goal was to deliver a packaging solution that felt premium and innovative without sacrificing usability or consumer trust.
Designing the Coffee Wave Food Bag for Kyma Coffee Grinders required us to strike a careful balance between honoring their rich heritage and embracing contemporary design innovation. Kyma’s legacy spans three generations of dedicated coffee roasting since 1973—a story built on craftsmanship, precision, and authenticity. We incorporated this heritage by integrating industrial, steampunk-inspired motifs such as gears and pipes, which symbolized the meticulous machinery and artisanal expertise behind their roasting process. These elements paid homage to the company’s commitment to quality and its deep respect for the technical mastery of coffee preparation. At the same time, we pushed design boundaries by infusing the packaging with a surrealistic, collage-like aesthetic that would resonate with younger, design-conscious consumers seeking originality and storytelling. By merging tradition with bold artistic imagination, we crafted a visual narrative that felt both authentic to Kyma’s roots and engagingly modern—positioning the brand as a forward-thinking player in a competitive market while staying true to its values.
The success of the Coffee Wave Food Bag has reinforced several key principles that will continue to shape our approach to future packaging design projects. First and foremost, it underscored the power of storytelling as a central design strategy. By creating a packaging experience that goes beyond surface aesthetics to deliver layered, meaningful narratives, we can forge deeper connections with consumers and elevate brand perception. This project also reminded us of the critical balance between visual disruption and functional requirements. While we embraced bold, surrealistic, and steampunk-inspired elements to stand out, we maintained strict attention to legibility, usability, and material quality. That balance is something we’ll continue to prioritize in every design.Additionally, Coffee Wave reaffirmed the value of a research-driven approach—understanding the target audience, market gaps, and cultural trends before committing to a concept. It also emphasized the importance of collaborative prototyping and material testing to ensure that creative ideas translate successfully into production without sacrificing quality or practicality.Ultimately, this project has inspired us to keep pushing creative boundaries while maintaining an unwavering commitment to craft, functionality, and authentic brand storytelling in all of our future work.
Grand Interview
22 October 2025 · No Excuse Cross Brochure
The conceptual development of the No Excuse Cross Brochure began with a fundamental question: How can we create not just awareness, but genuine emotional engagement with the urgent issue of violence against women? We knew that traditional, static print approaches often fail to inspire meaningful reflection or action. To address this, we designed interactive layers—transparent overlays that the reader physically lifts away—symbolically removing violence from a woman's face. This tangible act is intended to transform the audience from passive observers into active participants in the message. The process of revealing the unmarked image beneath serves as a powerful metaphor for collective responsibility in eliminating violence. We also selected a cross-shaped fold to break from conventional brochure formats and ensure the piece commands attention immediately. The unfolding experience reveals hard-hitting statistics and direct calls to action, encouraging the reader to confront the scale and gravity of the problem. Overall, the concept was carefully developed to provoke thought, invite empathy, and ultimately mobilize individuals to become part of the movement against gender-based violence.
Our research process revealed the sheer scale and severity of gender-based violence, underscored by devastating statistics like "137 women killed daily by family members." We knew these numbers were essential to communicate the urgency of the issue, but presenting them required a careful balance between impact and sensitivity. We approached this by prioritizing clarity and directness in the text—using simple, bold typography that refused to soften the message or allow it to be ignored. At the same time, we avoided sensationalism, ensuring the statistics were presented as solemn facts demanding reflection, not shock for its own sake. The interactive, cross-shaped fold and layered design structure were developed to guide readers through these challenging truths step by step. By asking them to engage physically with the brochure—unfolding panels and removing overlays—they confront the data in a more personal, deliberate way. This approach aimed to create space for empathy and thoughtfulness, transforming raw statistics into a call for collective responsibility and meaningful action.
The dimensional design of the No Excuse Cross Brochure was carefully planned to balance portability with dramatic visual impact. When closed at 12.3x12.5cm, it remains compact and approachable—inviting the reader to pick it up without feeling overwhelmed. This portability was essential for ensuring broad distribution and easy storage while maintaining a sense of personal, intimate engagement. When unfolded to 37x36cm, the cross-shaped layout transforms into a powerful, commanding visual statement that can’t be ignored. This large open format provided us with ample space to deliver challenging statistics, impactful imagery, and layered messaging in a way that feels immersive and deliberate. The unfolding experience was designed to guide the reader through a journey—revealing information step by step, mirroring the process of confronting and addressing the issue of violence.Ultimately, these specific proportions were chosen to enhance user interaction, encouraging reflection and participation while delivering a strong, clear message that demands attention and empathy.
Incorporating personalized name tags into the No Excuse Cross Brochure was a deliberate strategy to transform a generalized message into an intimate, personal call to action. By addressing each recipient by name, we aimed to break the sense of detachment that often surrounds social awareness campaigns. Instead of being a passive observer, the reader is immediately positioned as an involved participant in the fight against violence toward women. This individualization strategy significantly enhanced engagement and response. Recipients reported feeling personally addressed and more compelled to reflect on the issue and share the message with others. The use of the name created a sense of ownership and responsibility, making the act of reading the brochure feel less like consuming information and more like accepting an invitation to join a movement.By making the experience personal, we sought to build empathy, drive conversation, and encourage real-world action. It reinforced the idea that ending violence against women is not an abstract goal for "someone else" to solve, but a collective responsibility that begins with each of us.
Our choice to combine traditional paper with transparent gelatine overlays was driven by the desire to create a tactile, interactive experience that embodied the brochure’s core message. We wanted to go beyond static print and transform the act of reading into a physical metaphor for confronting and removing violence. The transparent gelatine layers featured graphic representations of violence—both physical and verbal—superimposed on a woman’s face. As the reader lifts each overlay, these symbols of harm are literally peeled away, revealing the unmarked image beneath. This material choice wasn’t just aesthetic; it was conceptual, designed to evoke the layered, persistent nature of gender-based violence while offering a tangible action that symbolizes its removal.By engaging multiple senses and requiring active participation, the materials reinforce the idea that ending violence is not passive—it demands awareness, empathy, and involvement. This deliberate, tactile interaction was essential to making the message unforgettable and encouraging the reader to reflect on their own role in driving change.
Receiving an Iron A' Design Award in Social Design is a significant honor that we hope will greatly amplify the core message of the No Excuse Cross Brochure. This recognition not only validates our approach but also increases its visibility, helping to bring the urgent issue of violence against women to a broader, more global audience. The award serves as a powerful endorsement that can attract new partners, advocates, and organizations interested in adopting or adapting similar participatory, design-driven methods for social change. We envision this visibility sparking dialogue about the role of design in tackling critical societal issues, inspiring others to experiment with bold, interactive communication strategies that move people from awareness to action. Most importantly, we hope this recognition helps to sustain momentum around the fight against gender-based violence by keeping it in the public eye and encouraging collective responsibility. Our goal is not just to inform, but to mobilize—and this award is a meaningful step toward achieving that mission.
The decision to use a bold visual language combined with straightforward, unflinching text was rooted in our core objective: to create a piece that simply could not be ignored. Violence against women is often a hidden, minimized issue, and we felt a responsibility to confront audiences with its stark reality in a way that demanded attention and reflection. Our design process involved careful balancing. We wanted to be direct and impactful without sensationalizing the trauma of survivors. This meant using clean, bold typography and striking imagery to communicate urgency, while maintaining respect and sensitivity for the subject matter. The raw statistics were presented plainly to ensure their gravity couldn’t be softened or dismissed.Ultimately, these choices were intended to break through the noise of traditional advocacy materials and engage viewers in a meaningful way. By refusing to allow the problem to be ignored or minimized, we aimed to provoke conversation, build empathy, and inspire real-world action—transforming the brochure from an informational tool into a catalyst for social change.
The wearable ribbon element was inspired by our belief that awareness campaigns need to move beyond passive consumption and invite real, personal commitment. We chose the internationally recognized white ribbon with an orange heart—the color of the global movement for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women—to create an immediate, powerful connection to the broader cause.By including a wearable element in the brochure, we aimed to transform readers into active participants. It offers them a simple yet meaningful way to publicly show their support, signaling solidarity and sparking conversations in their communities. Wearing the ribbon isn't just a gesture; it's a personal declaration against violence, helping to break the silence that so often surrounds this issue. This interactive component has been instrumental in building a sense of shared purpose and community. Recipients have described feeling more connected to the cause and motivated to spread the message further. In this way, the ribbon helps move the brochure from being an isolated communication tool to a catalyst for collective action and lasting social impact.
Working with Adobe Creative Suite was essential to effectively translating such a sensitive and complex subject into a compelling, respectful design. The suite’s robust tools allowed us to precisely craft layered compositions, especially the transparent overlays that symbolically remove violence from a woman's face. By managing these layers digitally, we could experiment with opacity, alignment, and sequencing to ensure the symbolic gesture was clear and impactful without feeling exploitative.Adobe InDesign and Illustrator also enabled us to perfect the cross-shaped folding structure and plan how the content would unfold in the reader’s hands, guiding them through a deliberate storytelling journey. Careful typography and color management ensured that crucial statistics were both legible and appropriately emphasized, striking a balance between urgency and sensitivity.Additionally, using these digital tools allowed us to maintain production accuracy, test multiple prototypes virtually, and collaborate closely with our print partners to ensure that the final piece met our ethical and aesthetic standards. Ultimately, Adobe Creative Suite empowered us to deliver a design that communicated a difficult message thoughtfully, while encouraging meaningful reflection and action.
Measuring the real-world impact of the No Excuse Cross Brochure goes beyond traditional metrics; it's about gauging its ability to provoke thought, start conversations, and inspire action. We've received direct feedback from recipients who described feeling personally addressed by the individualized name tags and moved to share the message with friends, family, and colleagues. The inclusion of the wearable ribbon encouraged them to publicly declare their stance, transforming private reflection into visible advocacy. We also observed the brochure's success in sparking dialogue within communities and organizations, making a typically uncomfortable topic impossible to ignore. This qualitative impact—measured through engagement, discussions, and requests for additional copies—demonstrated that design can function as a catalyst for social change when it invites participation rather than passive consumption. The biggest insight for future campaigns is the power of interactivity and personalization in driving awareness and empathy. Effective advocacy design must respect the gravity of its subject while empowering individuals to see their role in change. Moving forward, we'll continue to explore ways to merge clear, compelling messaging with engaging formats that transform awareness into meaningful, collective action.
Grand Interview
22 October 2025 · Serum Cosmetics Packaging
The symbolism of the grand prix flag was incorporated to convey the sense of speed and efficiency that defines the Serum products. During the design process, we explored various textures and patterns, ultimately choosing the checkered pattern, which directly evokes movement and victory. The checkered pattern was added as an embossed design, creating a contemporary and striking effect.
The metallic texture and embossed checkered pattern required advanced production techniques. We worked closely with specialized printers who utilized thermography and precision embossing techniques. Multiple trials were conducted to ensure the balance between luxury and functionality was achieved.
The fact that the product targets dermatologists influenced the choice of durable, medical-grade materials that convey reliability. The aesthetic remained minimalist yet luxurious, with an emphasis on clarity and legible typography. Functional details, such as easy-to-read information, ensured immediate comprehension.
