Design Interview

14 June 2023 · Horace Suite Residential Apartment

The project is aimed to transform a common 70s Hong Kong home setup to a modern Western style living space, where all zonings were shuffled and were reconstructed to allow flexible use of the living area to multiple functions, and also brought much more natural light throughout the flat that it originally lacks. The project strives for an unique demonstration on small home solutions with transformable zones to embed multiple functions but retaining spatial comforts.

We put quite a lot of efforts at the space planning stage as we want to fully utilize the use of space and using flow for our client. Change of zonings is also limited by electrical and piping connection point of the building, which is fixed and cannot be altered. Therefore, we need back and fore layout trials and cross checks with technicians before we could propose our idea to our client.
Since a full scale zoning shuffle required so much effort, this practice is rarely happened in typical apartment flats in Hong Kong, but this is also why we want to try and show the possibility how a tiny HK home could be looked like differently with most of the typical homes.

This project has been awarded for more than 5 different awards since 2022 so that we think this had already recognized our design thoughts on residential space. We would see this project a root of our design journey that we could show this to our potential clients as a great example how worthwhile when their money paid for space shuffling.

The design idea comes as fast as 1 month after the layout confirmed, as both of us and our client like minimal designs.

I would say this project's special is on the kitchen position. We put the kitchen the most far away from the entrance door where one had to pass through the living area before they enter the kitchen & dining space. This is rarely happened in a typical HK single flat as most of the buildings fixed the utility zones to align the overall piping and service locations. So it is a very valuable chance for us to make a difference to living way in Hong Kong home, which is actually works too. Aiming high, we hope this could be a sparkle for future change on residential building planning.

We put a lot of effort to make our zone shuffling work, as we have to ask E&M technician about our layout feasibility every time when we get one layout option. We also lean on our carpenter's expertise to make all our built in cabinets installed neatly to create minimal feel. It is also a big challenge for us to bring big pieces into the flat as we have to go through tiny elevators and narrow corridors of the building. It is a big challenge for us to divide the fixture into parts, while maintaining the lease joint lines on the surfaces.

When we first deliver our end product to our client, we received their applause We thought our

Designer Interview

My father is a skillful fit-out contractor so I was immersed into spatial work during my growth age. His passion and great work had proved how wonderful is when a nice space is created, and thus I am now an interior designer, as well as a good project consultant.

Our company, Make It Works, was founded in 2015. Having the chance immersing into retail store planning all the way till now with several international brands range from fashion to accessories, our team has grown to provide one-stop service for our clients, from design to fit-out.
Our mission is to craft tailor-fitted space to our clients.

Design's something that, one can look at it, feel it, and use it. It is different from pure Art, as each designed product is not only having aesthetics and meanings being considered, but it also need to be practical.

I am a super friend of interior space and architecture, which it is the only sector in the design industry that every product of it is wrapping around human-beings and provide contextual changes when people move.

My design world starts with a retail store plannings for a world-known fashion brand.

I keen on using natural elements in my designs and among those Natural Woods are always my favorite. Woods are always providing warmness and calmness to our designs. Every design could be different when you add wood elements into it.

Client needs is always my first sight for each of my designs, as they are always the one who use it and having emotional interactions with the space. Even for public space, I would consider all possible visitors types and try to create space that could evoke their feelings.

This is always the best moment for me when I see the real things of mine being built. It is more than just happiness as I know my design could bring emotions to every other ones.

A successful design, for me, could always make people feel and think. When someone enter the space, you start thinking what the space do, or alternatively the space makes you feel something. Based on different purpose, the space should lead people to corresponding emotions that match the usage of space. Say when you are in an art gallery, you should provide a calm, quiet space to let visitors to focus on the art pieces and feel their inside thoughts. Or when you enter your home, you should be able to feel the comfort and sense of belongings immediately because it is your own space.

Visual aesthetics is essential for a good design but I would be more looking at the practical side when I make my judgement. Design must always be practical and useful, otherwise it is just an art piece. Good design should always fits user needs, not just the needs they told you, but also the needs that they don't know yet.

Designer is a pioneer in all ways, not just evoking aesthetics of matters, but also having an ability driving human's thoughts and styles. We are also an environment protector, as we always create products using natural elements and sometimes we would try to make our design immersed into the surrounding environment. Thus we need these natural things be sustainable and always ready-for-use in our design.
