Designer profile

Designer of the Day Interview

6 May 2024

I've dedicated over a decade to the realm of artistry, specialising in sculpture and installation art. I pursued my passion for art by completing my undergraduate degree in Taiwan and then furthering my education by obtaining graduate degrees in the UK. My formal education, combined with relentless exploration and experimentation, has sculpted my craft. I've had the privilege of showcasing my work at exhibitions and galleries, delving into themes that range from the introspective to the interactive. My works are primarily sought after by private collectors, and I have had the privilege of undertaking public art commissions from national institutions as well.

Art became the language through which I could convey the intricacies of my emotions, thoughts, and perceptions. It was a means to connect with others on a profound, soul-stirring level. Life, as it often does, unfolded in a series of serendipitous moments and deliberate choices. While my artistic inclinations were evident from an early age, the realisation of my passion for design gradually revealed itself. It was an evolution, a natural progression that allowed me to explore the interplay between aesthetics and functionality, expanding the boundaries of my creative pursuits.

As an artist, my foremost priorities in design are storytelling, emotion, and immersion. I believe that every piece should convey a narrative, evoke emotions, and provide a deeply immersive experience. I transform concepts into artworks predominantly through hand sketching and creating physical models, a process I consider essential as a professionally trained artist. While digital tools and new technologies play a significant role in later stages, they serve to amplify and realise the vision that begins with the tactile, hands-on approach. This fusion of traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology ensures that my ideas are not only envisioned but also crafted with precision and depth. My approach is a fusion of meticulous planning, experimentation, and a touch of serendipity to create unique, meaningful art experiences.

The initial idea phase is thrilling, sparking the imagination. Yet, it's the journey of design that truly invigorates me – the iterative process of shaping an abstract concept into a tangible creation. The ultimate joy lies in seeing the final product, witnessing the idea materialise into a work of art. Designing fulfils me by allowing me to express my innermost thoughts and emotions, creating a profound sense of happiness and the gratification that comes from turning ideas into tangible, meaningful realities.

My deep passion for travel and a profound fascination with diverse world cultures have profoundly enriched my life, offering invaluable contributions to my creative pursuits. By traveling and studying art and design in different countries, my horizons have expanded significantly. This experience has instilled in me adaptability, cross-cultural awareness, and a distinctive tapestry of design influences. These facets of my background empower me with a multifaceted approach to design, allowing me to craft solutions that seamlessly merge aesthetic allure with functionality and cultural resonance.

My artistic journey is a continuous evolution, with a commitment to pushing creative boundaries. In the future, I aspire to embark on ambitious, large-scale public art installations that engage communities. My dream project involves integrating technology and sustainability into monumental, interactive sculptures. My path is marked by a desire to create more immersive experiences and break new ground in the intersection of art, design, and technology. There are many ideas waiting to be brought to life, but I envision myself designing spaces and structures that foster connections and leave lasting impacts.

Never lose sight of your initial vision. Stay ravenously ambitious and let your fervour for art and design burn brightly.

For aspiring designers, artists, and architects, my advice is to stay true to your passion and vision. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and remain open to learning and diverse influences. Success often comes through resilience and dedication.

Balancing the roles of an artist and university teacher, my days are dynamic. The day involves studio work and enriching discussions. Design news and artistic exploration are interwoven throughout, infusing my routine with fresh perspectives. The joy lies in the small things - a student's 'aha' moment, sculpting a particularly evocative form, or uncovering inspiration in the mundane. The magic is in the daily pursuit of igniting creative sparks and imparting knowledge.

1. My creative process is deeply rooted in personal expression and storytelling. While I'm aware of design trends, my primary focus is on staying true to my unique style and artistic vision. I believe that design trends can be influential but should not dictate the core of one's work. My inspiration comes from diverse sources, ranging from nature to human experiences, rather than fleeting trends. I value the enduring impact of timeless design over fleeting trends, and my goal is to create pieces that resonate with emotions and stand the test of time.

Good design, for me, encapsulates a harmonious blend of form and function. A well-designed product or project often evokes a sense of clarity and elegance – you know it when you see it. Common mistakes to avoid include sacrificing aesthetics for functionality or vice versa, neglecting user experience, and disregarding sustainability. A design is considered good when it not only solves a problem but also conveys a narrative, resonates emotionally, and stands the test of time. It's that 'aha' moment when everything aligns to create something exceptional.

The readiness of a design is a delicate balance. I believe that, in many ways, a design can be a work in progress. There's always room for improvement, and as artists and designers, we tend to revisit our work with fresh perspectives. However, there comes a point when a design reaches a state of equilibrium, where it fulfils its intended purpose, resonates with its audience, and aligns with the initial vision. At that moment, it's ready for its intended context, but the journey of improvement and exploration continues in the creative mind.

It's difficult for me to choose a single favourite design, as each project holds its significance and meaning to me. However, I can certainly share an example of a design that has had a profound impact on me. One of my designs is a large-scale public sculpture “Pride of the City” that I had the opportunity to create for Taichung city park in Taiwan. The inspiration for this sculpture is derived from the ecological park within the urban landscape, highlighting the importance of environmental sustainability and the interconnectedness of ecological diversity. It aims to celebrate the harmonious relationship between the environment and the preservation of nature. The design featured a series of intertwining metal structures, representing the image of four birds flying upward, and it presents multiple images similar to trees, flowers, and birds from different angles to show the cycle of four seasons and the harmonious coexistence of all living things. What made this design particularly special to me was the collaborative process involved. I worked closely with the community members, city officials, and cultural representatives, to gather their insights and perspectives. The fabrication process was another memorable aspect of this project. I worked alongside skilled craftsmen and engineers to bring the design to life. Witnessing the transformation of raw materials into a tangible, three-dimensional sculpture was an incredibly rewarding experience. It was a testament to the power of art and design to create something that not only visually captivates but also has a meaningful impact on its surroundings. Once the sculpture was installed in the park, it became a focal point for the community. This design of mine encapsulates the essence of my artistic approach—creating visually striking works that evoke emotions, inspire dialogue, and bring people together. It serves as a reminder of the transformative power of design and the ability of art to enrich lives and create lasting connections within a community.

One of the designers I deeply admire is the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí. His extraordinary work, particularly the Sagrada Família , Krypta Colònia Güell, Casa Batlló, Casa Milà and Park Güell in Barcelona, is a testament to his visionary approach to architecture and design. Gaudí's unique blend of art and functionality, as well as his innovative use of organic forms, has left an indelible mark on the world of design and architecture.
I have visited Gaudí's architectural wonders on multiple occasions and have been deeply moved. His innovative structural designs and visionary approach to sustainability have not only set him ahead of his time but continue to inspire us to this day. The ongoing construction of the Sagrada Família, guided by Gaudí's principles, involves architects, artists, and engineers who are pioneering new techniques to complete his monumental, unfinished work. It has been a truly magnificent creative journey for everyone involved.

Living in Taipei, my lifestyle and culture have a significant influence on my work. This vibrant city provides a constant source of inspiration with its rich history, bustling street life, and the fusion of traditional and modern elements. Music is an integral part of my creative process, often setting the mood for my work. My cultural background underscores the importance of sustainability and harmonious coexistence, which I reflect in my design projects.

My work culture values both independent creation and collaborative efforts. Small-scale sculptures often involve individual craftsmanship, while large-scale projects require diverse teams. Collaboration is central to my process, and I seek partners who share my passion for creativity, precision, and storytelling. In my profession, challenges range from material limitations to expressing intricate concepts. My responsibilities encompass concept development, design, and overseeing fabrication. Essential traits for artists include imagination, attention to detail, and adaptability, as well as a deep understanding of the human experience and a commitment to translating emotions into tangible creations.

I strive to give back to society through my art and teaching. As a university teacher, I mentor the next generation of artists and designers, empowering them with knowledge and inspiration. I am committed to philanthropy through teaching and design services, engaging in charitable fundraisers. I believe in giving back to the community that nurtured my creativity. I consider and actively participate in pro bono design work that aligns with meaningful causes.

Attending the A’ Design Award brought me valuable recognition and exposure. The three main benefits of participating in design awards are recognition, networking, and feedback, which contribute significantly to one's career and design skills. Design competitions are important for showcasing creativity and innovation. Being Designer of the Day is a true honour, recognising the dedication and passion I pour into my work.

It is the process of translating abstract ideas into tangible forms, whether it be through traditional mediums like painting and sculpture or contemporary digital platforms. Design is about crafting a unique narrative, telling stories through visual compositions that captivate and inspire. Ultimately, design is a manifestation of the artist's perspective, values, and imagination. It is a means of self-expression and a catalyst for dialogue, inviting viewers to engage, interpret, and derive meaning.

Throughout my journey as a designer, artist, and teacher, I've been fortunate to have the unwavering support of my family and mentors. My parents, in particular, have been my biggest supporters, encouraging my artistic endeavours from a young age and fostering my creativity. They instilled in me a strong work ethic, a thirst for knowledge, and the belief that I could achieve my dreams. Additionally, I've had inspiring colleagues who have shared their expertise, offered guidance, and collaborated with me, contributing significantly to my growth and success in the world of art and design.

Maintain my passion and vision, embracing challenges as growth opportunities while remaining open to diverse influences and continuous learning.

Overcoming self-doubt was significant hurdle. Establishing a reputation and clientele in the competitive design world required perseverance. However, each obstacle served as a stepping stone for growth.

Designers should present their work through clear and engaging visual presentations, complemented by well-documented design processes. The ability to articulate the rationale behind design decisions is essential.

I'm currently working on a public sculpture project that aims to blend art, technology, and sustainability. The sculpture will be interactive and convey a powerful message about our relationship with the environment. I'm excited to push the boundaries of art and design further and continue creating pieces that inspire and connect with people on a deep level. An esteemed designer is expected to create timeless, meaningful, and influential work.

Design plays a pivotal role in creating solutions that improve people's lives and make the world a more inclusive, aesthetically pleasing, and harmonious place.

Balancing the roles of an artist and university teacher, my days are dynamic. Design news and artistic exploration are interwoven throughout, infusing my routine with fresh perspectives. The magic is in the daily pursuit of igniting creative sparks and imparting knowledge.

I find the most enjoyment in creating art installations and public art. This type of design work allows me to explore and convey emotions, concepts, and narratives through visual language. The freedom to experiment with forms, colors, and textures, and to challenge traditional boundaries, ignites my creativity and fuels my passion. Public art invites viewers to interpret and engage with the artwork on a personal and emotional level, fostering a deeper connection and sparking dialogue.

I'd like to see the design industry continue to emphasise sustainability, inclusivity, and accessibility. In the coming years, it's crucial for designers to prioritise eco-friendly materials and production methods, ensuring that their creations have a minimal impact on the environment. Furthermore, I hope to see a greater recognition of the importance of art and design education, fostering creativity and critical thinking in future generations of designers.

The design field is heading towards a more sustainable, technologically integrated, and human-centred future. With growing environmental concerns, designers are increasingly focusing on eco-friendly solutions and materials. Technology will continue to play a significant role as well.

The time it takes to design an object from beginning to end can vary greatly depending on several factors. The complexity of the project, the scope of the design, and the level of detail required all influence the timeline. Simple designs with fewer elements may take a shorter time, perhaps a few hours or days, while more intricate and involved designs can take weeks or even months to complete.

Design should evoke emotions, resonate with the audience, and create a lasting impact. By prioritizing the emotional aspect, I believe that design becomes more powerful and meaningful. It combines aesthetics and becomes a vessel for storytelling, self-expression, and human connection.

Though life may not be dependent on Art, it finds its true radiance in its presence!

It's often a dynamic interplay between the two. Designers often navigate this relationship by drawing inspiration from existing trends while introducing new elements to set the direction for the future.

As a professionally trained artist. While digital tools and new technologies play a significant role in later stages, they serve to amplify and realize the vision that begins with the tactile, hands-on approach. This fusion of traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology ensures that my ideas are not only envisioned but also crafted with precision and depth.

I use traditional art mediums in my process. These tactile materials allow for a hands-on approach and bring a unique texture and depth to my creations. I also utilize design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) to create digital artwork, manipulate images, and design graphics.

They can evoke emotions, set the tone, and enhance functionality. The selection of colors and materials can impact aesthetics and durability. The ambient environment, including lighting and spatial arrangement, greatly influences the overall experience.

I appreciate when people ask about the inspiration and thought process behind my designs. It provides an opportunity to share the deeper meaning and stories that often lie beneath the surface.

When I encounter a new and great design or product, it sparks a sense of admiration and curiosity. I can't help but analyze and appreciate the aesthetics, functionality, and innovative aspects of the design.

An ideal design partner is someone who shares a deep passion for creativity, a commitment to excellence, and a collaborative spirit. Collaborative design can spark more creativity when working with individuals from different fields.

Besides the valuable guidance from my teachers during my learning years, I've drawn significant inspiration from the exceptional artists and designers I greatly admire.

Several books have had a profound impact on my artistic journey, including John Berger's "About Looking" and "Ways of Seeing," as well as the literary works of my favourite author, Jorge Luis Borges. These texts have enriched my creative perspective and enhanced my ability to perceive and interpret art.

I developed my skills through relentless practice, continuous learning, and a commitment to pushing my creative boundaries.

Meeting both Leonardo da Vinci and Antoni Gaudí would be a remarkable privilege. I'd love to converse with da Vinci, discussing his innovative ideas and exploring his thoughts on bridging art and science. In the case of Antoni Gaudí, I'd like to ask Gaudí if he believes that our generation's efforts to continue building his masterpiece, the Sagrada Família, align with his original vision and expectations.

Receiving awards and recognition is undoubtedly gratifying, as it acknowledges one's dedication and creative contributions. While fame may come with such achievements, it's essential to stay grounded and focused on the art and design itself.

As life evolves over time, so do our preferences. Currently, I'm into white, orange, and silver colors, enjoy various fruits, prefer the autumn and winter seasons, and have a passion for traveling.

A year after my artwork "Inseparable" was featured in the Hrd Design Awards' world tour, I arranged a trip to retrieve it personally from Antwerp, Belgium. Originally, I had planned to collect the award-winning piece the day before my flight back to Taipei. However, due to a train mix-up, I missed my appointment. On the day of my flight, I had less than 5 hours to make a round trip from Amsterdam to Antwerp to collect my artwork. It felt like the movie, mission impossible, incredibly nerve-wracking. Miraculously, everything went smoothly, and on that day, I traversed through Amsterdam, Antwerp, and Taipei, visiting three cities in one day.

My day revolves around the dual roles of creating and teaching. I spend a lots of time in my studio, ready to embark on a creative journey. When teaching, I share my artistic knowledge and skills with my students. In this way, my days as an artist are a harmonious blend of personal creation and the sharing of knowledge.

From a young age, I was immersed in the world of creativity, passionately exploring various artistic mediums. My innate fascination with visual expression and the power of aesthetics propelled me toward the realm of art. I pursued my passion for art by completing my undergraduate and graduate degrees in an art program at the university. While my artistic inclinations were evident from an early age, the realization of my passion for design gradually revealed itself. It was an evolution, a natural progression that allowed me to explore the interplay between aesthetics and functionality, expanding the boundaries of my creative pursuits.

Predicting the distant future is a challenge, but I believe that space exploration could redefine our existence.

I'd like my fans to know that my work is fuelled by a profound passion for art, design, and innovation. I firmly believe that design holds the potential to enhance lives, foster connections, and bring positive change to society. Your support and participation in my creative journey are deeply appreciated. Be sure to stay updated with my latest creations on my social media channels! Your support means the world to me!

During the creative process, I was deeply inspired by the cyclical beauty of nature and its harmonious diversity. The four birds not only symbolize the upward motion and freedom but also embody the coexistence of all living things throughout the changing seasons. This symbolism emerged as I observed how urban parks, like Maple Garden, transform with the seasons—from blossoming spring flowers and vibrant summer greenery to autumnal hues and tranquil winter stillness. By blending these ideas, the sculpture invites viewers to perceive different forms—such as trees, flowers, or birds—depending on their angle of observation, reinforcing the notion that nature’s beauty is multifaceted and ever-changing.

Wind load was a significant challenge, particularly given the sculpture’s intricate and open design. To address this, we worked closely with structural experts to analyze the pressure caused by airflow on the engineering structure. We optimized the sculpture’s angles and curves to reduce resistance while preserving its artistic integrity. The structural frame was meticulously designed with lightweight yet durable materials to ensure stability without compromising its visual brightness. By collaborating with stainless steel forging specialists and conducting rigorous structural analysis, we achieved an ideal balance between aesthetics and functionality, ensuring the sculpture’s durability under varying weather conditions.

The sculpture’s location at the convergence of three pathways heavily influenced its design. I envisioned it as both a visual anchor and a welcoming gesture. The scale was carefully calibrated to stand out amidst the garden’s natural surroundings without overpowering them. The upward motion of the design mirrors the act of entering and exploring the park, naturally guiding visitors toward the center. The orientation ensures that, from any approach, the sculpture offers a dynamic and engaging view, fostering curiosity and inviting deeper connections. The visual flow emphasizes harmony, leading visitors seamlessly into the lush greenery of Maple Garden.

Urban oases are essential for reconnecting city dwellers with nature. My vision was to create a work that not only celebrates this connection but also highlights the delicate balance required for coexistence. 22 October 2025 · Aeon Sculpture Installation

Translating Zhuangzi’s philosophy into a contemporary sculptural language was an exploration of duality as a fundamental principle of existence. Inspired by the fable A Happy Excursion, I sought to embody Zhuangzi’s vision of transformation and interconnectedness through a form that balances opposites—light and shadow, presence and absence, motion and stillness. The circular voids symbolize the infinite intersecting with the finite, creating spaces where perception and imagination converge. Reflective stainless steel amplifies this concept by making the sculpture a dynamic participant in its environment, constantly interacting with light, weather, and the observer’s perspective. This interplay of ancient wisdom and modern materiality invites viewers to reflect on balance and impermanence, transcending temporal and cultural boundaries.

The technical approach was inspired by natural forms, such as tree canopies filtering light, as well as Zhuangzi’s philosophy of harmony between opposites. The grid-shaped internal skeleton was meticulously engineered to provide structural integrity while minimizing material weight. Stainless steel was selected for its dual qualities of strength and reflectivity, enabling the sculpture to appear ethereal despite its solid construction. Achieving this balance required close collaboration with metal craftsmen to refine forging techniques and optimize the curvature of the steel plates. The result is a form that embodies both visual lightness and philosophical depth, with shifting patterns of light and shadow symbolizing the transient and ever-changing nature of existence.

The iterative process of developing six models was pivotal in harmonizing aesthetic vision with structural feasibility. Each prototype revealed new insights, particularly in optimizing the placement and size of the circular voids to maintain stability while preserving the fluidity of the design. The distinctive double-curved support points posed unique engineering challenges, requiring precise adjustments to achieve equilibrium. This iterative refinement also allowed me to explore how the sculpture’s elevation and contours interact with natural light and the surrounding space. Ultimately, this process not only ensured structural soundness but also heightened the poetic qualities of the final work, capturing both the elegance of Zhuangzi’s philosophy and the resilience of contemporary engineering.

The round voids are central to the sculpture’s narrative, functioning both as literal absences and profound metaphors. They symbolize the fleeting nature of the instant and the boundless continuum of eternity, inviting viewers to reflect on the spaces between presence and absence. As light passes through these voids, it creates dynamic patterns that shift with time and perspective, mirroring the impermanence celebrated in Zhuangzi’s philosophy. Artistically, these voids disrupt the solidity of the form, transforming it into a living, breathing entity that interacts with its environment. Philosophically, they embody the concept of wu (emptiness), where transformation occurs, bridging the tangible and the intangible. This design encourages viewers to peer through and beyond the voids, fostering introspection and a deeper appreciation of life’s dualities.

One pivotal moment was recognizing the profound synergy between structural mechanics and philosophical intent. This insight shaped every aspect of the design, ensuring that the sculpture’s form aligned with its deeper narrative. Refining the circular voids was another transformative step; each adjustment not only enhanced the piece’s stability but also enriched its symbolic resonance. The journey from concept to realization underscored the importance of adaptability and collaboration, as challenges often revealed unexpected opportunities to elevate the work. Witnessing abstract ideas materialize into a tangible form was deeply rewarding, reaffirming my belief in the power of perseverance to bring a vision to life.

Wind load analysis was a critical factor in shaping Aeon’s design, especially given its open, lightweight structure. Extensive testing revealed how subtle adjustments to the curvature and angle of the voids could reduce wind resistance while enhancing stability. This optimization allowed the sculpture to coexist with natural forces rather than oppose them, embodying Zhuangzi’s philosophy of harmony with the environment. The resulting form, with its flowing lines and seamless contours, preserves the work’s aesthetic elegance and symbolic essence, reflecting the dynamic interplay between resilience and adaptability.

The juxtaposition of whales and fish eggs stems directly from Zhuangzi’s analogy of the vast and the minute as interconnected facets of existence. Whales symbolize grandeur and vastness, while fish eggs represent minuteness and potentiality. By integrating these symbols into the design, I sought to visualize the idea that the small and the great are intrinsically linked, each containing the essence of the other. The circular voids evoke fish eggs, while the sculpture’s overall presence suggests the grandeur of a whale. This interplay creates a narrative of unity within diversity, inviting viewers to explore the infinite within the finite and the boundless within the specific.

Aeon serves as a conduit for dialogue, bridging ancient Eastern philosophical thought with modern sculptural innovation. As an educator, I see it as an opportunity to inspire students and viewers to explore how abstract ideas can be embodied in physical forms. The work challenges conventional boundaries, encouraging an interdisciplinary approach that blends cultural heritage with contemporary creativity. By addressing universal themes of duality, transformation, and interdependence, Aeon fosters deeper engagement with both philosophy and art, highlighting their relevance in navigating the complexities of modern life.

This recognition affirmed the universality of art as a medium for cross-cultural connection. It inspired me to continue exploring how deeply rooted philosophical traditions can inform contemporary public art, resonating with global audiences. This acknowledgment reinforces the importance of creating works that reflect cultural identity while transcending geographical and temporal boundaries. By bridging Eastern philosophy with modern aesthetics, Aeon exemplifies how public art can serve as a platform for shared understanding and dialogue.

I hope Aeon invites viewers to engage with both its tangible and intangible dimensions, fostering a deeper connection between physical form and philosophical ideas. Through its interplay of light, shadow, and void, the sculpture encourages contemplation of duality, transformation, and interconnectedness. By challenging conventional perceptions, Aeon demonstrates how contemporary sculpture can transcend aesthetics to become a medium for profound philosophical exploration, enriching the viewer’s experience and understanding of the world.

Achieving the floating lightness in Soar was an intricate process that demanded a balance between artistic ambition and engineering precision. A major challenge was designing the sculpture to convey motion and levity visually, while ensuring its structural stability. The unique form, with its deliberately shifted center of gravity, required extensive experimentation with structural mechanics. The internal stainless steel framework was meticulously engineered to distribute weight evenly, while supporting the forged outer layers. Each curve and angle was refined to sustain a sense of dynamic flow, evoking the graceful movement of a bird in flight. Lightweight materials and precision welding techniques were crucial to minimizing bulk and maintaining stability, all while achieving the sculpture’s ethereal and fluid aesthetic.

The mirror-polished surface was inspired by the transformative nature of freedom and the interplay between self and environment. By reflecting the sky and surroundings, the sculpture becomes a seamless part of its environment, continuously evolving with changes in light, weather, and time of day. This reflective quality symbolizes the fluidity of the human spirit, evoking a profound sense of connection. It also invites viewers to see themselves and their environment within the artwork, fostering a deeply personal interaction. This reflection serves as a metaphor for spiritual healing—a reminder that freedom and inner peace originate from within but are influenced by external forces. The surface’s ability to capture and transform light enhances the sculpture’s uplifting quality, reinforcing its themes of transcendence and harmony.

Wind load considerations were pivotal in shaping Soar’s design, as the open and airy form had to withstand significant environmental forces. The minimal support point posed a unique challenge, requiring optimal stress distribution across the sculpture. Research into structural mechanics and wind resistance informed the precise curvature and angles of the design, ensuring the sculpture could endure external pressures without compromising its visual lightness. The internal grid structure provides stability, while the smooth, external curves efficiently channel airflow to reduce wind resistance. These insights allowed for a harmonious balance between aesthetic appeal and structural resilience, capturing both the physical dynamics of flight and the metaphorical balance of freedom.

The evolution of Soar was a journey of refinement and adaptation. The original prototype exhibited in 2016, served as a conceptual exploration of flight’s essence on a smaller scale. Scaling up to 1280mm introduced challenges in preserving the visual delicacy of the design while addressing structural demands. The larger scale necessitated a rethinking of proportions, ensuring that the curves retained their elegance without appearing heavy. Additionally, the amplified size enhanced the sculpture’s reflective interactions with its environment, making the mirrored surface more impactful. This transition deepened my understanding of how scale affects perception—what feels intimate at a smaller size becomes monumental and immersive when expanded. The process reinforced the need to balance artistic vision with technical feasibility, ultimately elevating the sculpture’s emotional resonance.

Soar was designed to offer a dynamic visual and emotional experience, mirroring the fluidity of flight and the serenity of a garden. From different angles, the sculpture reveals new forms and interpretations. Head-on, its sweeping curves evoke momentum and energy, while a side view emphasizes grace and equilibrium. The mirrored surface amplifies this variability, reflecting unique fragments of the environment and creating an interplay of light and shadow that shifts throughout the day. This evolving perspective invites active engagement, allowing viewers to discover new meanings and sensations each time. The emotional depth is further enriched by the symbolism of the Garden of Eden, offering a universal narrative of healing and freedom while inviting personal connections to the sculpture.

The shifted center of gravity in Soar was essential to its design, reinforcing the visual metaphor of a bird in mid-flight. Achieving this required precise calculations and iterative testing. The internal grid structure was meticulously engineered to counterbalance the sculpture’s asymmetry, ensuring stability despite its dynamic, off-center form. Collaborating closely with metal craftsmen, we fine-tuned the weight distribution to align perfectly with the support point. This process involved continuous adjustments and physical modeling to refine the equilibrium between strength and elegance. The result is a sculpture that not only captures the motion of soaring but also demonstrates the seamless integration of artistic freedom and structural ingenuity.

Winning the A' Design Award for Soar has been a profound affirmation of my artistic vision, inspiring me to further explore the intersection of nature and contemporary sculpture. It underscores the importance of creating works that resonate with universal themes like freedom, transformation, and harmony. Looking ahead, I plan to deepen my exploration of dynamic forms and reflective surfaces, incorporating new materials and technologies to expand the possibilities of public art. This recognition also encourages collaboration with communities and institutions to create site-specific installations that engage audiences on both personal and collective levels. Ultimately, it motivates me to craft sculptures that evoke emotion while addressing broader environmental and philosophical narratives.

The internal grid-shaped skeleton serves as the unseen backbone of Soar, enabling its daring form while maintaining stability. Structurally, the grid distributes weight evenly and provides a secure foundation for the forged stainless steel surface. This framework also complements the sculpture’s artistic expression, symbolizing the interplay between freedom and restraint. Just as a bird’s flight is guided by unseen forces like wind and gravity, the internal grid represents the structural underpinnings that allow freedom to flourish. The precision of this framework ensures that the sculpture maintains its shifted center of gravity and minimal support point, reinforcing the contrast between its solid construction and the ethereal lightness it conveys.

Soar acts as a bridge between personal introspection and communal experience, embodying the concept of a "healing soul Garden of Eden." By reflecting its surroundings and inviting exploration from multiple angles, the sculpture fosters a sense of unity between individuals and their environment. The mirrored surface encourages self-reflection, allowing viewers to see themselves within the artwork, while the dynamic form evokes the universal yearning for freedom and transcendence. In public spaces, the sculpture transforms its setting into a place for quiet contemplation and shared wonder, connecting personal spirituality with the collective human experience.

Fabricating Soar required overcoming significant challenges to achieve its lightweight yet structurally sound design. The split forging process demanded exceptional precision to shape the stainless steel plates into smooth, curved forms without compromising strength. Welding these sections seamlessly was equally complex, as even minor imperfections could disrupt the sculpture’s visual continuity and structural integrity. Collaborating closely with skilled craftsmen, we developed innovative techniques to address these demands while maintaining the sculpture’s elegance. These challenges reaffirmed my dedication to pushing the boundaries of metal sculpture, shaping my artistic decisions to prioritize both beauty and resilience in the final work.
