Designer profileDesigner of the Day Interview

I began working as a planner for the design consulting department of the interior construction company, which mainly plans and designs the interior of the various commercial facilities in TOKYO for 5 years.
After that, I changed jobs to the advertising company Hakuhodo in 1995, and began working as a spatial design director who plans, designs, and produces various corporate branding facilities. I experienced so many projects for various clients such as automobile companies, mobile phone carriers, real estates, cosmetic companies, energy companies and so on. And I learned the design working with various excellent designers met in the projects.
In 2007, I established new creative team called Hakuhodo Experience Design which specialized in creating "spatial brand-experience" with various creative members such as movie creators, graphic designers, architects, marketers and interior designers. And I had been promoting various branding businesses with the theme of experience design that brings good relationships between corporates and the customers. At that time, I learned how to produce a brand space by integrating various designs (interior, furniture, architecture, graphics, movies, products, etc.) based on the discovery of problems, strategy planning method, and concept designing. And I clearly got my thinking that Design is a great tool to make some new experience.
I worked for so various design projects such as a design guide line for branding of automobile dealer stores, an executive briefing center of a Japanese top real estate company, or an innovation center of a precision machine manufacturer.
I have established Consentable as private furniture design studio in 2014, after which I began to work on the theme of digital life furniture. In other words, I work in a private design studio of Consentable while working at an advertisement company.
I am doing this because I couldn't suppress the desire to launch original brand and pursue the possibility of design that provides a new experience. And I have started digital life furniture design that fits the rapidly evolving devices.

I studied Urban Design at Kyoto University. At that time, I was inspired by a book called "Pattern Language" by Christopher Alexander. He was an architect and famous for the phrase "City is not a Tree" and argued that city planning does not come from the top down, but the bottom up. He edited the elements of the city like "languages", created something like a dictionary for architects, and wrote it down as a theory in his book "Pattern Language." Thus, he presented the idea that City Planning would be realized by designing each small facility in harmony, and created a stir in the City Planning industry at that time.
I totally agreed with his idea, and I thought what needs bottom-up thinking is not only city planning, but also our all designs. And I wanted to be a designer from that perspective. Design does not have one correct answer, but various correct answers. And they can function as tools in the times and contribute to the development of next society. From that point of view, I found the job of a designer very attractive. So, I think it's important to think of design not only as a decoration, but as part of the large movements of our lives.
My first job as a designer was interior design for an Italian restaurant. it was almost 25 years ago. The owner's order was to make the restaurant popular with young families in the area. At first, we started by investigating and analyzing what kind of restaurants are popular in Tokyo, why they are popular, and then thinking about the design concept, naming, menu and even the financial plan. And we worked on the design for the big purpose for changing the lives of the local people better by developing this new restaurant. On the day of the opening, a large number of customers visited with a smile, and the owner was very satisfied. As a designer, I have been most attracted to the moment when I can realize that design lives in society and is useful to the people. From my point of view, Design should serve its purpose for not only owner and customers, but society including those around it, like as "Pattern Language" by Christopher Alexander. Since I became a designer, that idea hasn't changed.

The first priority is the long-lived design concept.
I would like to create a design concept from these two major perspectives: looking ahead of the times and seeing the problems left behind by the times.
The second is the craftsmen or the manufacturer who can share our vision and ambitions.
In my case, at the concept stage, I often think alone, but at the detailed design stage, I work with the craftsmen or the manufacturer to think about rational manufacturing methods and points for improvement. I think that the designer and the craftsmen should work together to aim for a finished product.
The third priority is the final stage of making a mockup and using it for myself. At this stage, once I forget that I am a designer, I discover and point out a lot of “No” for mockups from a complete user perspective.
My design goes through these three priorities to become a finished product.

I'm just focused and acting innocently like a kid.
It's been my habit for a long time, but when I concentrate on something, I get into a consciousness that seems to be separated from the surroundings. This is often the case when designing.
The most fulfilling feeling in a design is the moment when the design is used by the people. It feels like sending my child, who has been raised so hard, to kindergarten. Just as his parents are impressed to see him interacting and having fun with everyone around, I feel great happiness when my design is accepted by society.

I am very interested in "human beings". I have always liked to think about "human beings", especially from the natural science sperspective. I like to read books such as anthropology, psychology, sociology, biology and history books. In terms of design, the books about Leonardo da Vinci were very interesting and greatly influenced by my way of thinking about design.
I often think about why was "design" born in human beings? It is said that our ancestors began designing stone tools for food processing in the Lower Paleolithic era, around 3 million years ago. It was so long before the discovery of Fire. Therefore, "design" was possibly existed before the formation of group society such as family or hunting teams. Thus, I believe "design" was born from the result of our eagerness to "live" in ancient harsh environment, not only for express something to their group society.
Therefore, I am thinking it is important to think of “design” as a piece in a large planning for our human beings' "lives".

What I'm most interested in right now is to create a eco-system for collaboration between designers in the world, in other words, to build a business model for next-generation design.
Since the Industrial Revolution, the design world has developed in a society premised on mass production. Architectural design has also evolved with the urbanization of the world. This is because the power of design was the source of creating a new human-centered environment while utilizing the resources of nature as raw materials or as urban grounds. That was why the power to draw the future of design has created great economic value.
But what about looking back on the present day? Is it possible to make the design great value even now?
I basically think YES. However, I think that the direction of design value is needed to be changed. Now is the time to think seriously about the sustainability of the global environment. We must rewrite the concept of growth that the world takes for granted, such as mass production, mass consumption society, and urbanization. To that end, we designers should change and proceed. As for how to change, I hope that more designers in the world should have relations beyond the borders of nationality, corporate, culture and so on. Because we should start talking on how we should protect the global environment or how we can make it. Because it is necessary to collaborate from various perspectives in order to solve such a very big problem. If I could invent such a business model, I can say I could contribute a little to the next generation of designers.

The profession of designer is a very important, meaningful and interesting profession that will affect the future of humankind.
Going back to the history of design in a broad sense, the design of stone tools about 3 million years ago was the first. After that the design on how to use fire around a million year ago, and then decorations, cave paintings, musical instruments 30,000-80,000 years ago. Surprisingly, the design of architecture and letters is an event of only about 10,000 years ago. Anyway, as you can see from the history of design, design has the power to change human civilization.
What I would like to convey to young designers is to work on design from a big perspective, to think what kind of design is needed when looking back on the present from that perspective.

For this question, you might want to mention best practices and principles that other designers could follow to be successful. You may mention some common mistakes or biases that they should avoid or give them tips, shortcuts and inspiring ideas to do better. What tips and ideas would you give to people who are looking to get started in design? Do not focus on young designers, this question is about pro-tips.
I think design is like a word for society. Until the word is spoken, we don't know the influence of the word, and when we say the word, we get various reactions from society.
So, once I start designing, I should be careful not to shake the design concept until unveil to the society. I think that the design concept is the significance of the existence of design. Therefore, after a lot of research and thought, if I have any doubts about the design concept, I will reconsider whether I should really proceed with the design. The design concept is like the basic structure for advancing the design, so I want to think and make from bottom of my heart.
In order to create a design concept smartly, I focus on two perspectives. One is the flow of the times, and the other is the problem of being left behind in the times. I think the design concept needs an idea to fill these gaps.
By incorporating a large perspective into the design concept, we believe that not only will we contribute to the evolution of society, but we will also be able to create designs that are stable.

It’s very simple like below.
I wake up in the morning and check the weather, air, sunlight outside and usually stretch and workout for inner muscle. After that, I have a breakfast and conversations with my family, and check the today’s schedule and emails with my Mac Book or smartphone.
I usually work from home, and have some meetings with my colleagues by online or smartphone, or focus on each project.
Sometimes I go jogging for a change when I don't have a meeting. I also have more opportunities to cook for my family. Anyway, I always work very relaxed.
Alternatively, I go to exhibitions, flip through design-related magazines and books, and expand my ideas on a daily basis.
After work, it's time for dinner with my family. Since I started working from home, I've become more familiar with making slightly elaborate meals and opening wine and beer.
It's a fun time.
After that, I usually spend a relaxing time.
Take a bath, watch TV, watch movies online. Recently, the opportunity to play board games with family has increased. After that, I fall asleep.
In the midst of this everyday life, in the midst of normalcy, I am always thinking about the next design. The problems that need to be solved are in my daily lives, so I focus on thinking about them in that context. And I am always waiting for hints of solutions to arise by chance.
I want to cherish the design concept that I can see in a simple and natural life. In addition, I always try to avoid thinking that "the lifestyle as a designer should be something" because it makes the borders of ideas.

I'm not particularly aware of design trends. But we check trends from time to time to understand the trends of the big era.
I have a private design studio, but I also work for an advertising company fortunately. At an advertising company, I have an environment where I can always accept global movements such as various marketing information, consumer trends, government movements, etc., so I think I often get new design tips from it.

When judging the quality of a design, I always focus on scarcity.
In particular, I focus on the scarcity value of the experience.
.
What is designed becomes a product, is used by the user, and is eventually disposed of as waste. Considering that what I design becomes a product, I believe that I should not design too many products that have no scarcity value.
In addition, I also place importance on the potential of the design to become a standard in the future.
Our lives are changing rapidly with the times, and what is required of design will also change with the demands of the times. In this context, I believe it is important for designers to design with an awareness of the standards of the next generation.

I always make mockups in the final stages of design and give myself some time to use and experience them. I forget the role of designer, and become a complete user. And I observe my feelings to it when I use it, experience it and evaluate it.
At that stage, if the user inside me gives OK, the design is complete.

It’s the first product, CONSENTABLE / WT as founder of CONSENTABLE, because it gave me the chance to think deeply about Design. I usually work as a spatial designer in advertisement company and work for various big project such as branding space, promoting space, retail store and restaurant of our client. However, I can’t decide the design freely in these client works because it belongs to the client. So, WT project was the most important for me because I had the opportunity to think deeply about what issue to consider, what kind of design to make, when to announce it, etc. at my own discretion.
In addition, the experience of exhibiting CONSENTABLE / WT for the first time in 2014 at an overseas exhibition (Milan Design Week) was very important. Of course, I was inspired by the reactions of various people to my design, but especially the conversation with the various very unique and talented designers from the world gave me a great inspiration and joy.

I love Achille Castiglioni's designs. I strongly feel both the depth and simpleness of design, including rationality, diversity, originality, humor, and warmth with his designs. In the sense of favorite design studies, I love to study the thinking ways of Charles Eames, Le Corbusier. Because they are so simple, innovative and effecting to societies, even to our recent Lives. At the same time, I think the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Antonio Gaudi have a lot to learn for me when considering the principles of nature and design.
I live in Tokyo, Japan.
Since ancient times, Japanese people have a culture of enjoying the four seasons of nature, a sense of beauty that prefers to be simple, minimal and rational. They have a great influence on my design. Rather, I would like to regenerate them to the modern daily life.
There are still quite a few good craftsmen who have inherited traditional techniques in Japan. I think it is a great advantage to be able to design on the premise of using the excellent technology of such craftsmen.
On the contrary, if there is a design disadvantage of being in Japan, it is that the traditional cultural heritage is being lost due to the excessive urbanization and globalization in Japan. I feel this is a big problem for Japanese design.

As CONSENTABLE which I preside over, I usually create a team for each project. After the design concept is decided, I consider which work partner should be selected. When I start to work together with them, I usually spend a little time talking about the project while actually meeting and eating.
The selection criteria are different for each project, but what have in common is that I often work with people who are engaged in unique challenging activities. I think design is like a "kind of conversation", so it's because it will be more attractive design to have a "conversation" with unique and challenging person.

Since I entered university, I have left my hometown of Okayama prefecture and have continued to live in Kyoto and Tokyo. About a few years ago, I started to make some contribution to Okayama, and I am doing design activities as a volunteer. I have been involved in winery construction work for domaine tetta in Okayama prefecture, and I also ask the furniture craftsmen or studio in Okayama for CONSENTABLE furniture. I learned a lot from this activity. It means that even if I don't have financial rewards, I will get more mental rewards than I expected, such as irreplaceable experiences and valuable relationships.
There are three benefits to participating in a design award.
One is that your design can be evaluated by non-users. This gives me the chance to know its reputation of my design in comparison to many designs. It leads to reasonable motivation for the next improvement.
The second is that I can have time to objectively face my own design and organize my thoughts about it. It is of great value to me to organize my own way of thinking by recreating the detailed presentation tools required for each award.
Third, if I win the award, I will have more opportunity to meet challenging people. This is not only a PR effect, but it is also very valuable to start new communication such as toasting with project members and meeting other award winners at the award ceremony.

Design Interview
1 July 2025 · Consentable WT Ao PC Work Desk
Consenrable's vision is to innovate the daily lives of modern intellectuals using various devices to be simple by Japanese sensibility.
I think our lifestyles have changed rapidly with digital devises, but the designs of desks have not changed yet. Your desk might be flooded with various types of dusty wirings when you place your PC or chargers of various devices, so I wanted to improve those negative experiences. Especially in the era when Work from Home is common, our work desks at home also should be sophisticated. I designed this to provide better experiences on desks for home PC users, with using the top plate of indigo dyed wood grains that resemble the calm sea surface.

I have focused hiding wirings and devices to fit in a simple form. For example, the wiring space behind the top plate is the size of W1050mm D100mm H750mm that fits for OA taps connected with various outlets such as PC adapters. A cord of the OA tap can be embedded in the grooves of the legs. Regarding the device space, not only can devices be stored, but they are also connected to PC through the wiring space. This desk is designed to be simple as if there were no wiring with it.
In addition, I have made the wood grains resemble the calm sea surface with indigo dyed finish trying to provide calm experiences on the desk to home PC users.

It took about a year and a half to develop the concept of this table. The idea was a desk to solve the problems for both noisy PC work desk and decline of craftsmen. After the idea came up, I drew pictures and drawings, made full-scale mockups, researching craftsmen and repeated careful verification for many times, so it took longer than usual.
This design is intended for commercialization. It is not commissioned.
I would like to exhibit at various exhibitions in the future, and I would like to introduce and sell it on the Consentable brand website.

The products I designed are made to order and will be sold under the Consentable brand. Consentable’s production is usually outsourced to the most suitable craftsman for each product. In the case of Consentable/ WT Ao, it will be manufactured by a Japanese woodworking workshop called KOKKOK and a woodworking indigo dyeing team called Ao.
If there will be an offer in the future, I would like to actively consider selling and leasing production rights.

Consentanle/ WT Ao can keep the top plate clean by storing the noisy wirings.
In Japan, there is a traditional culture that emphasizes "Seiri Seiton" means cleanliness and simplicity of the workplaces in order to do a good job. I wanted to realize that idea on PC work desk.

I don't have any other particular design or designer in mind, but if there is a design that has influenced me, it may be a simple and rational design of Japanese tea room or tea utensils.
Anyway, I made a very simple design that I imaged in my mind.

Consentable have a strong desire to let more people in the world touch the wonderfulness of Japanese craftsmanship.

I think it is quite rare to use the traditional Japanese technique "Aizome", indigo dyeing for finishing. Also, I think that no other similar products have so called Japanese design, which emphasize flexibility, such as the assembly type and the use of movable lids.
We convey two meanings in this coined word of Consentable. One is Able to be connected to Concent which means outlet in Japan, and the other is Able to be agreed. With this concept at the core, we will be designing and producing various types of digital life furniture with Japanese craftsmanship.
I used MacBook, digital pen tools, sketchbooks, pencils, the internet, and design books for concept-stage research. I especially studied the entire history of desk design.
Once I decided on a concept, used Adobe Illustrator to draw the details during the design phase.
Then, I made a full-scale mockup with craftsmen and completed the design by trial and error for detailed usability.

It’s Japanese “Aizome”, traditional indigo dyeing technology by Japanese craftsmen. To develop the color of indigo on wood, over 3 times of hand-dyeing works are needed. After that, the wood grains change their textures like the surface of calm sea with glossy indigo.

I have collaborated with "Ao.", who specializes in solid woodwork dyed with indigo in Tokyo. "Ao." carefully select and utilize the fine quality of woods, bringing them into the daily life with the Japanese craftsmanship, delicately handmade one by one. "Ao." means “Blue” in Japanese, the beautiful color of indigo.
The role of Japanese traditional technique is almost essence of this design.
I have achieved a simple, sustainable and attractive appearance by applying a traditional natural dyeing technique called "Aizome" to woodworking.
By utilizing the rare Japanese craftsmen and utilizing the traditional Japanese technique, Consentable/ WT Ao is expressing the possibility of effective utilization of traditional techniques.

I have researched the history of the table before designing.
For example, the oldest design of the table in record was a simple wooden one in the ancient Egyptian era (BC. 2500), and after that, the design of table has been evolved into different types to suit the diversification of various lifestyles. On the other hand, ancient chairs seemed to have the meaning of "a symbol of power."
I thought it very interesting that the design of the table does not have strong meanings and seems to be treated as purely functional in their history.
After researching this background, I decided to design the Consentable / WT Ao with a focus on functionality.

I think the problem is that the selling price is high because it is manufactured by a method that is not mass-produced. I am thinking seriously how to solve the contradictory situation between keeping the craftsmanship on it and sell at a reasonable price for many users.
One day, I got an email from the A' Design Award.
Fortunately, it was just the time when the Consentable / WT Ao was completed for the exhibition of NYCXDESIGN2021, so I decided quickly.
As a result, I was very happy to apply.

The WT Ao is an indigo-dyed version of the WT developed several years ago. Although exactly the same shape, WT Ao has a very strong presence and I like its design. After submitting the product for this award, I realized once again the importance of appearance and finish.
I think it’s enough.

1 July 2025 · Swing Ao Stool
Most conventional chairs are designed based on the idea that sitting is a static state, even though the human body is designed to move. Swing Ao has a tension structure that allows the seat to move freely in conjunction with the movement of the sitter's pelvis. This promotes a feeling of floating and the movement of the pelvis, spine, and surrounding muscles, activating the body's functions just like playing on a small swing.
"Swing Ao" is a product design that solves a problem in life where Work From Home has become the norm because of COVID19. The design presents a solution to a private problem, lack of exercise. This is my problem, but it is also a problem that many home workers have, and I felt it necessary to design a new chair to solve this problem. That is what I want to achieve.
The Swing Ao, which received the Silver award this year, has been attracting the interest of many people because of its new concept of a stool that promotes physical activation while sitting. What I want to do next is to redesign it better so that it can be offered to users at a reasonable price in order to reach many people.
It took about a year to complete this work. 3 months at the concept development stage, next 3 months at the basic design stage where materials and manufacturing methods were examined and craftsmen were selected, and then 3 months at the implementation design stage where all details were fixed with collaborating with the craftsmen, and 3 months at the mockup production stage.
The idea started when I started Work From Home.
As I spent more and more time sitting in a chair, I had a feeling that my body was getting lazy, and as a soccer player, I was concerned that my body would continue to decline.
I heard similar concerns from my teammates, and I began to think about designing a chair that would benefit them.
As I read books on the human body structure, I became very interested in the importance of the human sense of balance and unconscious body manipulation.
Then I began to think of designing a chair with a swinging seat.

Then I began to think of designing a chair with a swinging seat.
The design of Swing Ao is patented by Takusei Kajitani on 19th April in 2022.
At first, I am planning to promote Swing, a stool that provides new experiential value, to many people. To do so, I am thinking of first producing and selling it myself. Of course, if there is a company interested in manufacturing and selling it, I would like to consider lending the copyright to them and consigning the production and sales to them.

Of course, if there is a company interested in manufacturing and selling it, I would like to consider lending the copyright to them and consigning the production and sales to them.
As Work From Home becomes the norm around the world, I am convinced that there must be many people who, like me, are anxious to spend their days sitting at their desks all day long. However, no chair exists that dispels such people's anxieties. That's why I designed Swing Ao.
One day, I suddenly became strongly interested in the design of SELLA, a swinging stool with a seat made of a bicycle saddle designed by my favorite designer, Achille Castiglioni. After a few days, it occurred to me that it would be a unique stool if the bottom of the SELLA could be supported by a suspension structure, and the framework for the Swing Ao’s design was set.
I am considering the target user to be all people who Work From Home and do not want to degenerate their bodies while sitting in their chairs. For example, people who enjoy sports, children who like to move a lot, people who are very interested in taking care of their bodies and health, people who sometimes use a balance ball as a chair, and many other people may need Swing Ao. I want them to experience Swing Ao for a choice.
I believe that the idea of supporting a shaft rod extending from the seat with a small suspension structure has a uniqueness not found in other chairs or stools.
I thought of Swing's small suspended structure of the seat as resembling a small swing, hence the name Swing. I hope it conveys the playfulness of the design.
The finishing touches on this stool were completed in collaboration with the indigo-dyed woodworking team Ao which means blue in Japanese. So I have added "Ao" to the name as a sign of collaboration.

I mainly used the pen tool on my iPad mini when coming up with designs. I think it is the best tool because it is easy to carry around and record the various ideas that come to me when I am on the move or in the middle of playing.
I am considering it very unique because the shaft rod extending from the seat is an extension of the spine, like the tail of the person sitting on it, which allows the structure to sway freely in 360-degree directions. This allows the spine and pelvis to move at all angles, making the stool an easy way to stimulate a sense of the body balance.
In the production process, I colaborated with Ryosuke Tanaka, a craftsman at the KOKKOK woodworking studio, to study the structural aspects of the product and also with Yoh Miyaji of Ao, a team specializing in indigo-dyeing woodwork, to design the finishing.
The ropes of the suspension structure, which play an important role in Swing Ao, are made of high performance ropes with a load capacity of more than 400 kg per rope. This is more than enough when eight ropes support the seat, but I believe this performance is necessary to handle the unpredictable loads of swinging and moving.
I effort to understand Swing's needs by researching the Work From Home migration rate of companies after the COVID19 disaster. For example, I found that in Tokyo, approximately 50% of companies have already transitioned to a Work From Home work style. The highest percentage of disadvantages for Work From Home workers is "lack of exercise".
I believe that the need for Swing is thus greatly expanding.
I believe that the need for Swing is thus greatly expanding.
Various trials were conducted on the rope strength of Swing Ao's suspension structure. As a result, I found that it is necessary to consider not only tensile strength but also frictional strength with the rope hole, so I paid careful attention to selecting a rope that combines both performances.
I also challenged what allows the user to change the seat height by adjusting the length of the rope, referring to the rope structure of the Kotsuzumi, a traditional Japanese percussion instrument whose sound is adjusted by the rope's tensile strength.

With my design studio Consentable, I would like to design new furniture that adjusts to the digital lifestyle of modern people, and to propose to people around the world products made by Japanese craftsmen that reference traditional Japanese techniques and ideas. For this reason, I consider my participation in such an international competition as a necessity.
I have been designing large furniture such as WT, PC tables at Consentable. This was my first designing a kind of chair, and I feel that I was able to quickly identify various points for improvement because the mock-up work was rather easy to do and because it is portable, allowing users to easily try it out.
I also realized once again the importance of designing while incorporating users' opinions, not just my own.

Swing Ao will be exhibited at Como in Italy in July 2022, and also at many more exhibitions in the future. I really hope that everyone will experience Swing's unique floating sensation there.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.

1 July 2025 · Consentable MT Dining Table
MT is designed so that each member of the user's family can store and retrieve work tools, including digital devices, in six drawers at any time, allowing each one to spend their time for multiple purpose on this table.
Our challenge is to improve the family gathering experience at the dining table. Therefore, we designed this table as a hangout for the family by incorporating the concept of Washitsu, Japanese traditional multi-purpose room. At the same time, we adopted the traditional Japanese technique without steel nails and realized a sturdy and reliable structure that can withstand the long usage time of the family.
We have already received several orders and plan to sell the product on a made-to-order basis for a while.
There is a traditional culture of using a room flexibly in Japan. The room called Washitsu does not have fixed role, it becomes a dining room with Ozen when eating, a living room with Zabuton when relaxing, and a bedroom with Futon at night. It makes sense to use space for multiple purposes with each tool, depending on the time and occasion. Inspired by that idea, I thought of redesigning the dining table.
The design of Consentable / MT is patented by Takusei Kajitani.
At first, I am planning to promote Consentable / MT, a dining table that provides new experiential value, to many people. To do so, I am thinking of first producing and selling it myself. Consentanle / MT can keep the top plate of dining table clean by storing the noisy wirings.
In Japan, there is a traditional culture that emphasizes "Seiri Seiton" means cleanliness and simplicity of the workplaces in order to do a good job. I wanted to realize that idea on the dining table.

I don't have any other particular design or designer in mind, but if there is a design that has influenced me, it may be a simple and rational design of Japanese tea room or tea utensils.
Anyway, I made a very simple design that I imaged in my mind.

This dining table is multi-purpose one with 6 drawers which has narrow gaps for wirings in front. Not only meal related items but also note PC can be stored with its wirings and OA taps in the drawers. Therefore, when working, the user can take out note PC from the drawers, and when eating, he can put it in them, and have a meal together. This provides both a family dining and working space, so it can be used like a family hangout. That is the originality of Consaentable / MT.
MT is an abbreviation for "Multiple Table".
While a dining table is limited to the function of eating, this MT is intended to be used for a variety of purposes, primarily including the use of digital devices.

In 2022, we were awarded a Bronze for WT Ao, an indigo-dyed furniture with strong presence finish, but this time MT has left the finish on the bare wood, as is traditional Japanese furniture. I applied for the award because I wanted to know what kind of evaluation my new functional furniture made with this traditional Japanese finish would receive. As a result, I am very happy to receive a Bronze evaluation.
MT is a table that not only uses beautiful cypress wood finished with traditional Japanese techniques, but also has new features. We have found that traditional techniques, which are difficult to continue for economic reasons, can be reaffirmed in value by developing new functions that are appropriate for the times.
I think it’s enough.

Design Legend Interview
1 July 2025
When I was a student, I studied urban design at Kyoto University. At that time, I was impressed by a book called "Pattern Language" by Christopher Alexander. He was an architect, famous for saying that "a city is not a tree," and he argued that urban planning is not a top-down process, but a bottom-up one. He compiled the elements that make up a city like a "language," creating a kind of dictionary for architects, which he wrote down as theory in his book "Pattern Language." He thus created a stir in the urban planning industry of the time by presenting the idea that urban planning could be achieved by designing each small facility in harmony with each other.
I fully agreed with his idea and thought that a bottom-up approach was needed not only in urban planning but in all of our designs. And I wanted to be a designer with that perspective. So I believe it is important to think of design not as mere decoration, but as a part of the larger plan that is our lives.
After graduation, I wanted to work on designing various stores as components of a city, so I joined an interior design firm and designed several stores and commercial facilities. After that, I wanted to work on design with a slightly broader perspective, so I moved to the spatial experience design department of an advertising company. There, I have been involved in the planning, design, and production of brand experience facilities for various companies.
In 2014, I launched Consentable as my personal studio to work on designs other than client work, and I continue to design and develop digital life furniture.

While it is exciting just to see a design that I imagined in my head actually take shape in the finished product, there is an unparalleled joy for me in having unknown people experience it, be interested in it, enjoy it. I think that is why I became a designer.
Of course I chose to be a designer. After studying urban design in Kyoto University, I wanted to design stores, one of the elements that make up a city, so I started to work for an interior design and construction company. There I studied interior design and architectural design in earnest, and also got a first-class architectural license in Japan. After that, I wanted to design large scale facilities, so I changed jobs to the space development division of a big advertising company. It is an incomparable pleasure for me to see customers enjoy shopping, eating and drinking, and experiencing exhibits in the retail spaces and corporate facilities that I designed. And in order to present to the world not only designs in response to clients' requests, but also my own designs, I have established a private design studio, Consentable, where I design digital life furniture. This is also very exciting.
As a Concentable, I would like to design new furniture that is with the major lifestyle change of digital transformation, centered on the design and development of digital life furniture. In particular, I feel that modern people's lifestyles are becoming more and more disconnected from the earth's nature. Rather, I would like to continue to create designs that allow people to live a sustainable and rational digital life while always feeling the aura of nature. Since ancient times, the idea of continuing to live a rich life while rationally incorporating nature has been ingrained in Japanese culture, and I would like to carry on this idea in contemporary design.
The profession of designer is so important, meaningful and interesting that will affect the future of human beings.

What I would like to convey to young designers is to work on design from a big perspective, to think what kind of design is needed when looking back on the present from that perspective.
I think a good designer has the ability to turn 90% into 100%, but a great designer has the ability to turn 0% into 100%. In other words, a good designer has the ability to sharpen the given conditions, while a great designer has the ability to create new value from no prerequisites with the power of design.
When I evaluate the quality of a design, I always focus on originality.
In particular, I focus on the scarcity value of the experience by the design.

For example, when good design first appears in the world, it may only be seen as an oddity in society. This is because it is a design that goes against conventional wisdom. Many people tend to choose a familiar design that is an extension of the conventional wisdom. Therefore, good design is initially a weak entity that will disappear if only a few people realize its value. That is why those who find its value should invest in spreading its value while communicating its goodness to the public.
Whenever I design, I always think of the famous Native American saying, "The earth is borrowed from the next generation of children."
If I had the time I would design new furniture for my own grandchildren. He is not born yet, but probably will be some years later, and he will be living a totally different life in a few decades. It would be wonderful to be able to imagine that and design furniture that will be needed by him in the future.

It would be wonderful to be able to imagine that and design furniture that will be needed by him in the future.
What I'm most interested in right now is to create a eco-system for collaboration between designers in the world, in other words, to build a business model for next-generation design.

Perhaps paradoxically, the answer is not to seek design success. I see design as a means to solve various problems. So, only finding reasonable challenges and focusing solutions will be a shortcut to good design.
Achille Castiglioni is my favorite master. All of his designs have originality, humor, and a warmth that you can feel in his personality. At the same time, I am numb to his very rational way of thinking. There is a word he lectured to design students in 1995 that left a great impression on me.
It is the following sentence.
"A good project (design) does not come from the ambition to leave a legacy of your achievements to future generations, but from the desire to exchange experiences, even the smallest ones, with strangers who will use what you have designed.
Keep in mind that our work is all about exploration. Each work is not a destination, but rather a pause in the process. It is a process."

I love SELLA designed by Achille Castiglioni. There is an anecdote that the stool was designed for Italians who like to make long phone calls, so that they cannot stay too long. The bicycle saddle seat, the pink shaft, and the hemispherical leg bottoms are all out of the ordinary, yet I think it is a very rational design, given the concepts mentioned above. At the same time, it has a sense of humor and warmth. If we had furniture like this in our homes, our lives would feel very rich and joyful.
My favorite is Swing. When I ask my friends to sit in Swing, they all look surprised and enjoy the new experience. It is so much fun for me.
The idea of Swing started when I began to work from home because of COVID 19.
As a football enthusiast, I had a growing sense of anxiety that my body would continue to decline because of all day sitting. I heard similar concerns from my teammates, and I began to think about designing a chair that would benefit them.
Then, as I learned a lot from the books on the human body structure, I became very interested in the importance of the human sense of balance and unconscious body manipulation.
This is how I came up with the image of Swing.
Most chairs are designed based on the idea that sitting is a static action, even though the human body is designed to move.
This may cause our bodies to remain still for long periods of time and accelerate the decline of our physical senses.
Swing is designed to allow the seat to move freely like a small swing in conjunction with the movement of the sitter's pelvis.
The Swing has a structure that allows the seat to move freely like a small swing, in conjunction with the pelvic movement of the sitter. It is a stool that aims to activate the body's senses while enjoying the feeling of floating.
I feel I have designed a good solution for people with similar problems in Work From Home.
That's why my favorites is Swing.

The following words of my favorite master, Achille Castiglioni, are my answer.
"Experience does not give us certainty. On the contrary, it only increases the likelihood of failure. The more time that passes, the more difficult it becomes to design better. The countermeasure? Always start over from scratch, with humility and patience.
What I want today's students to understand is that what design should really matter should be found in the mistakes and deviations in the acts of living."
And I always have been trying to design from the problems of our daily life and to think from scratch.

Even if I had not been a designer, I would have been involved in creating something new in some way. Proposing new value to the world through creating something new is a very attractive job. Even if I am not a designer, there are many jobs related to design, such as marketer, engineer, craftsman, sales person, PR person, and so on. I believe that a design work can be realized only when people in many specialized fields join forces, so I would have done any job related to that.
For me, "design" is like an important part for philosophizing my life as a homo sapience. Also, I believe that design is a very effective planning tool for our humanity to "live" well.
I often wonder why "design" was born in the history of human beings. It is said that our human ancestors began designing stone tools for food processing during the Lower Paleolithic Period, about 3 million years ago. This was long before the discovery of fire. In other words, "design" may have existed even before the formation of collective societies such as families and hunting groups. In other words, "design" may have arisen not only to express something to the collective society, but also as a result of greed for "survival" in the harsh environment of ancient times.
Of course, today's environment is easier to live in than in ancient times, and expression in collective society has become more important, but still, when we look to the long distant future, we should create the "design" that human-being needs to "live" well. After all, I think it is important to design from our own insatiable desire to "live" well.
I believe that design is an important task that makes me think about the relationship between both large and small perspectives, such as "now" in long histories of human-being, and "here" in the diverse places on the earth.

If I had to name just one person, I would say my wife. She always gives me honest feedback on my designs as a user. She never takes my side, never completely rejects me, but gives me intuitive and sincere feedback as a representative of the user, which I believe has helped my designs to grow and not go in the wrong direction.
Of course, there are numerous other benefactors who have supported me. For example, Zsofia of Design Pier, a global curator who guided me to various global exhibitions; Mr. Shibuya of ELD Interior products, Mr. Oshima of Yobi, Mr. Tanaka of KOKKOK, who helped me shape my designs as a craftsman; Mr. Miyachi of Ao, a wonderful wood dyeing studio; the members of mokutankan team who are doing unique activities; my designer friends whom I met at exhibitions in Tokyo, Milan, Paris, New York and Hong Kong; Abezo who always supports my website creation; and Manabu Matsunaga, a photographer in Paris, Yoko Inoue, photographer in Okayama, and so on.
I am very grateful to the many people who have inspired me and helped my designs grow including various people who have purchased Consentable pieces.

I think that experiencing the pieces of the masters of various designers and visiting their studios helped me the most.
I believe that the purpose of design is mostly about real experiences. I think a lot of the purpose of design is to form real experiences, and I was able to sense the attractive aura of great designs by experiencing a series of real touches with them. I feel that the accumulation of these senses has been very important.

I feel that the accumulation of these senses has been very important.
I don't consider myself a design master, but I have experienced many obstacles.
For example, when I have exhibited my piece in global exhibitions, I have often felt quite depressed when compared to the others. Even under such circumstances, there were people who praised my work. With such encouragement, I would often ask myself, "What is the originality of my design and where does it stand out?". I have repeatedly worked to think carefully about it and apply them to the next piece of work. I believe this is the reason why my designs have been able to grow.
Since I have come to believe that design is not about competing with each other, but about continuing to express my own unique senses and ideas without fear of failure, I have been able to concentrate on my own design work.

In this era of digitalization, designs are often expressed and evaluated through photographs and CG graphics, but I still believe that they should be evaluated by seeing the real pieces.
Therefore, I think designers should show their pieces as realistically as possible, show them in the exhibitions or solo show.

I would like to design various series of chairs using the same structure for a while, and to explore new possibilities for chairs based on the unique experience of Swing's movable seat.
I also hope to design furniture or play equipment that will provide a solution to the problem of "lack of exercise" that many people face in today's world, where Work From Home has become the norm.
I am designing and developing pieces under the theme of digital life furniture as Consentable, and I would like to pursue all possibilities under this theme.

To continue creating designs until just before I die. I believe that design is a means to "solve problems" and "create new experiences”. In this light, I believe that the "challenges" and "necessary experiences" we face in each era, society, place, and stage of life will continue to change. That is why I believe that will be an opportunity to create some kind of new design based on the experiences just before I die.
Anyway, I always like the act of designing.
Anyway, I always like the act of designing.
I think what many people expect to esteemed designers is "beauty of form" within their designs. However, I believe that people also expect them to find issues in their daily lives.
People are so familiar with their normal environment that they rarely notice everyday problems. Therefore, it is important for designers to find problems and its solutions that concern with the everyday lives for people and to message it by their designs. I think the design pieces should be a new message or new solutions to the people.

If we think of design not only as a beautiful form, but also as creating a form that aims at solutions to various issues, there are many things that design can do to make a better society.
In today's society, the issues of global environmental destruction and global warming have become very important, and various designers are already working on designs that provide solutions to these issues.
Designs that use sustainable materials, new tools to protect the global environment, graphic designs that educate people about sustainable culture, designs that utilize discarded items, and designs that do not generate waste, are all new ideas that have not been seen in human-being's history.
I think the various sustainable designs never seen in the past history is proof of the ongoing progress that design can make for a better society.

I believe that society had faced a situation that had never existed in the past history of human being. It is a situation in which it has become clear that nature, or natural resources, the natural environment, and the natural circulation system, which we thought provided infinite benefits, are finite.
In such a situation, society, which has been dominated by the values of "convenience" and "efficiency" for human beings, is about to change to the next set of values.
These values are still unknown, but I think it is important for designers to find them.
What I would excite to design with particular emphasis is how to find them and give form to the new values.

My favorite design project is Swing.

Basically, I think the design industry needs diversity and tolerance in its reputation, and I would be happy to see it change more in that direction.
I totally agree with the following statement by Achille Castiglioni.
"Forget the 'ivory tower' image of the artist. A work of design is the result of a group of people with abilities in each field (technical, industrial, commercial, and aesthetic) coming together and joining forces. And the designer's job is to bring this collective work together and express it."

I think that “design field” is expanding as quickly as the urbanization of the earth now.
I think that “design field” which has started with inventing stone tools 3 million years ago is evolving at an amazing speed that humankinds cannot keep up with in this era. On the contrary, the nature and resources on the earth, which are the raw materials for design products, will gradually decrease at an amazing speed. So, I think it become the normal design that we always have to redesign our environment with reusing existing products or cities in the near future. In other words, I think it will be very important for future design that the sustainability is considered from production to disposal in the beginning of designing.
Now, we are standing on the being-damaged earth where should be rewrote with new ways of design.

It takes about a year to complete one work. Approximately 3 months at the concept development stage, next 3 months at the basic design stage where materials and manufacturing methods are examined and craftsmen are selected, and then 3 months at the implementation design stage where all details are fixed with collaborating with the craftsmen, and 3 months at the mockup production stage. The above is a normal schedule for me.
My design projects start with the discovery of a problem, so when a project arises is when I have identified the problem to be solved.
From that perspective, the first step is to find an original way to solve the problem while researching methods and ideas from a wide range of perspectives.
One way to do research is to search the Internet, or to look for clues in the works of the masters that I have experienced in the past.

I have two mottos they are "design what I really want" and "design with a sustainable perspective".
Most of the things I want already exist in the world, so I don't try to design them. On the other hand, I don't want to design new things that I don't really want. So, I ask myself, "Do I really want it?" is the driving force behind my design.
I also consider whether the design is needed by others. If it is just for me to use now, a mock-up is sufficient, but if it is going to be used for a long time by others, I think it is my responsibility as a designer to design from a sustainable perspective while keeping a long-term perspective in mind.

I believe that "design" is one tool to talk to society. A certain design is born when it responds to the needs of society, but I believe that the design can also influence society and dramatically change it. Then another dramatically changed social need arises, and a new design is needed again, and so on.
In other words, design and trends are like a conversation between designers and society, and I believe that they evolve back and forth between each other.

I believe that they add expression and mood to design pieces.
In other words, I believe that they fulfill the communication function of the design to society.
In fact, I was surprised that my piece called WT Ao, which won a bronze at the A' Design Award in 2021, was evaluated much more highly than WT, even though it was an indigo dyed version of a previously created WT with only wood color. I think, perhaps the rustic simplicity of WT was felt to be richer and simpler with the added mysterious look of the indigo-dyed wood work.
In this way, I believe that color, material, and ambient in design function when they appeal more to the human senses.

There are various tools I use when designing.
The tools will change depending on what stage the design is at.
I usually use Mac Book, pen tools, sketchbooks, pencils, and the internet or design books and design magazines for research at the concept stage.
Once you've decided on a concept, I usually use a MacBook and Adobe Creative Cloud to make drawings during the design phase. At the same time, I often make real sized mockups quickly with my DIY skills.
And I go back and forth between the mockup and the drawings as I work to bring the project closer to completion.

I design furniture for the digital life era as my design studio Consentable. In other words, furniture that offers a different kind of functionality and experience. So, I would like you to ask these questions, "What is different from the past?" or "What function does it serve?" or "What kind of experience is this design intended to provide?".
I would like to use it first. If it is something that is not available, I want to check out its video and recommendations. In other words, I want to have a concrete image in my mind of what the experience will be like, different from anything I have seen before.
My ideal design partner is my wife who is not a designer. She gives me very clear feedback on my designs from one user's point of view.
In other words, my ideal partner would be someone who can objectively evaluate and give me feedback on my designs.
I believe that co-design is possible if such a relationship can be established, but at the moment my wife is not a designer, so she is not a co-designer.

I think they were intellectual workers living a digital life in a very ordinary modern Tokyo because I always think about digital life furniture as Consentable.
Actually, one of them is myself, and from my own life, I think about whether I can innovate various existing furniture into a form suitable for digital life.

Besides my private design studio, Consentable, I have been working as a space designer for a Japanese advertising firm, planning and designing branding facilities for various companies, where I have been involved in designing spaces to build "brand experiences" for people. In the process, I have always focused on the "experience" and "action" of the visitors to the facility, and I believe that this is a skill that I have been able to utilize.
Of course, "experience" is an extremely important element in furniture design as well.

If I could meet the respected master, Achille Castiglioni, I would like to show him my pieces and receive his feedback and I would like to have a discussion about the design in this era.
I am not famous, but I imagine that being famous is hard because it seems to take away from my free time.
However, I am interested in the fact that being famous puts me in a position to get a lot of feedback, both positive and negative, which may give me a chance to grow faster.

I'll answer intuitively.
My favorite color is lemon yellow, my favorite place is the ocean, my favorite food is pasta, my favorite season is early summer, my other favorite things are soccer, wines, and motorcycles, and my favorite brand is Apple Computer.

In 2001, a year before 2002 FIFA World Cup Japan and Korea, a Japan architects’ soccer tournament has been held annually by a group of architects’ who love soccer. Each team is made up of master Japanese architect who invite members of their studios and their families to participate. Among them, of course, there are women and children are allowed to participate, but no contact play is allowed to them.
I have been a part of the start-up of that convention and I have continued to participate since the very first time, but there is one thing that I find very strange.
Each year, the architect studios of the masters who have made outstanding achievements in the design world win that soccer tournament. Even though they are so busy with their design work that they don't have time to practice soccer.
One year, during a heavy rainstorm, the winning team was decided by rock-paper-scissors, and the winner and runner-up were the teams of the masters of the architect world. I think it was really strange.

For me, design is as important as living, so whether my motivation is up or down, I always think about design.
Every day the weather can be sunny, rainy, or stormy, but just like that, I try to take whatever situation comes my way and have a great day as a designer.

To be honest, it was never obvious to me as a small child that I wanted to be a designer. However, I was obsessed with making "games" such as baseball boards, Sugoroku, and Monopoly out of cardboard and construction paper. I also wrote my own comic books. The story was very simple: a game story until my favorite baseball team always won the game.
I would like to see the concept of national borders disappearing from people all over the world, and people living together with plants and animals as a family, while protecting the global environment, the land on which we live.
My pieces will be exhibited at many global exhibitions in the future.
I really hope that everyone will experience with them.
Thank you very much.

Designer Interview

Consentable is a furniture design studio for developing the digital-life furniture founded in 2014 by Takusei Kajitani.
Our vision is to innovate the daily lives of modern intellectuals using various devices to be simple by Japanese sensibility. We convey two meanings in this coined word of Consentable. One is "Able to be connected" to Concent which means power outlet in Japan, and the other is "Able to be agreed" by users. With this concept at the core, we will be designing and producing various types of digital life furniture with Japanese craftsmanship.
Consentable's activities to date include the following
We have unveiled our first product WT, PC work desk at Tokyo Designer’s Week in TOKYO in 2014, and MT, multiple-table as the secondary product at IFFT Interiorlifestyle living in TOKYO in 2015. After that, we have exhibited our pieces at various Design exhibition such as Salone del Mobile Milano and Paris Design Week in 2016, Hong Kong Design Week in 2017, NEW YORK Design Week in 2018 and 2021, Designart Tokyo in 2024.

I like the design process that creates some new experiential value. It is a process that offers a completely new perspective on a product that has existed as a matter of course and something surprises that delights the users. It is an exciting and fun process for me like thinking of some little prank.
And it makes me happy when I see a scene in which users are having happy experiences because of the design I created. I like that moment.
Whether I am thinking of architecture, interior design, furniture, logo design, or any other kind of design, the process is very exciting.

It was Consentable / WT. It is a specialized table for PC users with the ability to store noisy power cords, USB cords, and various devices under the table top. In addition, Consentable WT Ao, an upgraded version of WT completed with a wood indigo finish, received Bronze A' Design Award in 2021.
Wood is my favorite material because I am charmed the unique and beautiful grains which tells the own stories of the growing in the nature. If every tree also had conscious, wood would be talking to us humans by grains.
In addition, I am very interested in traditional Japanese woodworking techniques such as Kumiki, Sashimono that use no steel nails in all joints. I think this wisdom to use wood effectively will continue to be valuable in different ways.

I have to say it is the early mornings with quiet atmosphere, beautiful sun light, bird singing, and smell of greens. I can feel my lively energy as a humankind if I could feel standing on the earth in the animated surrounding.
After that, I can feel the most creative myself.
And no matter what the weather is, no matter where you are, it will always come.

I focus on providing user experiences that change their preconceived values and perspectives. I want to design something that might look the same but have different functions, new experience values to the users.
I'm just focused and acting innocently like a kid.
It's been my habit for a long time, but when I concentrate on something, I get into a consciousness that seems to be separated from the surroundings.
This is often the case when designing.

Unfortunately, once completed, I am not very impressed because I always want to check the various point for improvements. Sometimes I even think that completion means giving up on improvements.
But when I see users enjoying the experience with it, I feel a totally different sense of delights. From then on, I feel positive about the effectiveness of the design.
But when I see users enjoying the experience with it, I feel a totally different sense of delights. From then on, I feel positive about the effectiveness of the design.
I think the shortcut to a succesfull design is to make improvements from the user's point of view over and over again. However, we must be careful not to blur the design concept at that time.
In other words, I think it is important to accumulate small improvements for the user experience while making sure that the big concept that the product is aiming for does not blur. I believe that both a solid axis of concept and the accumulation of small improvements will lead to a successful design.

What always comes to my mind when designing is the Native American famous phrase, "The earth is borrowed from the next generation of children." I think it is very important to have this perspective at an early stage of design.
In particular, I believe that the environmental problems caused on a global scale are major issues not only for designers but also for our children as future humankind.
I think that designers should have the responsibility of not designing anything which is not sustainable as well as designing usable things.

Last year, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Consentable's founding, I held an exhibition titled “Deep Dive into What I Want?” at Desigart Tokyo 2025. The exhibition showcased our major works designed over the past 10 years. One significant realization was that, upon reflecting on the past decade, I was once again made aware that I had consistently created functional works that truly resonated with me. It was a valuable opportunity to reflect on the “thinking” behind the design. At the same time, being able to discuss this approach with a large number of visitors (design professionals) was a significant asset.
My design inspiration begins with discovering the problems of our modern life.
For example, "Consentable /MT" is a product design that solves a problem in life where noisy wirings on the tables has become the norm because of the various digital devices. The design presents a solution to a private problem: the need to organize the desktop without noisy wirings. This is my problem, but it is also a problem that many modern intellectuals have, and I felt it necessary to design a new dining table to solve this problem.
Designing to solve a problem is like trying to solve a complex mathematical problem. And when a beautiful answer is comming to me, the skeleton of the design is complete.
After that, as a finishing touch, I always think about how to reflect my sense of style in the design. This is like a field of expression where there is no right answer.
This is how my inspiration takes shape.

Many users seem to think of my design as a category of minimal design. Actually, I am aiming to the simple and functional design that eliminates waste gives such an impression.
I like the simple design that combines functionality, beauty and playful, so that might be my style.
At the same time, I think it might be better to put a more sustainable message in my design.

I live in Tokyo, Japan.
Since ancient times, Japanese people have a culture of enjoying the four seasons of nature, a sense of beauty that prefers to be simple and rational, and woodworking techniques that do not use nails. They have a great influence on my design. Rather, I would like to regenerate them to the modern daily life.
There are still quite a few craftsmen who have inherited these techniques in Japan.

Consentable is a private studio that I managed, so fortunately I can do everything I want. When I work with companies, I want to get them to understand the value of my design as much as possible and work as if we were co-creating new valuable project.
I think that you can work happily and functionaly if you hire a designer who has sufficient sympathy for the vision and corporate value that the company aims for. Of course, the results will be more satisfying.
In my opinion, good designers are usually more capable of understanding the client's true vision and have the flexibility to improve their design at each meeting.
In my opinion, good designers are usually more capable of understanding the client's true vision and have the flexibility to improve their design at each meeting.
My design work begins with finding a problem to solve in my daily life. In finding the problem, I focus on what I can strongly feel it. Once I have identified the problem, I spend many days thinking carefully about how to solve it in my daily life. Then, once I have something in mind, I draw a rough image sketch. I use paper and pencil, and the pen tool on my iPad. It's easier to get ideas if I draw lines freely by hand. I also sometimes research designs in completely different fields.
By going back and forth between these two tasks for a while, imagining the problem to be solved in my daily life and making hand-drawn sketches, I get closer to a solution. Then, at some point, inspiration strikes. At that moment, the skeleton of the design is complete.
Once the design skeleton is complete, the first step is to create a mock-up using easy materials .
We then have various people try out the mockup and see their reactions.
At this stage, we may make minor adjustments to the design as we receive feedback from users.
After that, we will conduct a detailed design to enhance the completeness of the design, find a craftsman who can brush up the mock-up, and hand over the blueprints to him or her to confirm whether or not the product can be commercialized and what precautions need to be taken. Then, through repeated trial and error with the craftsman, the design is completed along with the mock-up.

My favorites at home are almost my works such as a stool Swing, work desk WT, dining table MT, lighting Fragile. And last one is Motorcycle DUCATI monster.
It’s very simple like below.
I wake up in the morning and check the weather, air, sunlight outside and usually stretch and workout for inner muscle. After that, I have a breakfast and conversations with my family, and check the today’s schedule and emails with my macbook or smartphone.
I usually work from home after COVID-19, and have some meetings with my colleagues by online or smartphone, or focus on each project.
In the midst of this everyday life, in the midst of normalcy, I am always thinking about the next design. The problems that need to be solved are in my daily lives, so I focus on thinking about them in that context. And I am always waiting for hints of solutions to arise by chance.

Being able to create things that change the world through design is a positive aspect that cannot be changed by any profession.
On the other hand, the negative aspect is that it is a difficult occupation to refuse when the client asks for a design even if it is not necessary to make it. Sometimes it may be necessary to decline the request from client.

My design has two golden rules: "design what I really want" and "design with a sustainable perspective".
Most of the things I want already exist in the world, so I don't try to design them. On the other hand, I don't want to design new things that I don't really want. So I ask myself, "Do I really want it?" is the driving force behind my design.
I also consider whether the design is needed by others. If it is just for me to use now, a mock-up is sufficient, but if it is going to be used for a long time by others, I think it is my responsibility as a designer to design from a sustainable perspective while keeping a long-term perspective in mind.

Of course designers need technical skills, but I think it is fundamentally important for them to have the insight to discover social problems and the communication skills to deeply understand the intentions of users.
Considering the fact that the design field is broadening and that the products designed have a great impact on the future, I believe that designers have a great social responsibility. In such an era, I believe the above two skills are very important.

There are various tools I use when designing.
The tools will change depending on what stage the design is at.
I usually use Mac Book, pen tools, sketchbooks, pencils, and the internet and design books for research at the concept stage. I sometimes buy books related to the project from Amazon. At this stage, we don't use many design applications.
Once you've decided on a concept, I usually use a MacBook and Adobe Creative Cloud during the design phase.
At this stage, I often make mockups. When making a small three-dimensional model, I usually make an accurately scaled model.

This is a difficult question.
I don't think I can manage the time because I am always absorbed in the design work. Sometimes I spend less time sleeping and eating, and I'm absorbed in it. However, I always pay attention to my physical condition in order to think of a good design, so it can be said that physical condition management eventually leads to time management.

The most frequently asked question is, "What kind of project are you doing now?" I have some projects in progress all the time, so I would like to introduce some projects that may be of interest to the questioner. I sometimes ask him the thought about my ideas of the new project conversely.
The experience of exhibiting Consentable /WT for the first time in 2014 at an overseas exhibition (@Milan Design Week) was very important. Of course, I was inspired by the reactions of various people to my design, but especially the conversation with the various very unique and talented designers from the world gave me a great inspiration and joy.
And the winning the A' Design Awards have been equally wonderful experiences

My client is a user who is interested in Consentable. Due to the characteristics of "digital life furniture", designers and engineers who often use PCs have purchased it.
In these days, working from home is more commonplace, so I would be more than happy if I could get more people interested in it to provide them comfortable environments.

I like designing in areas where no one has touched it. Consentable focused on the development of "digital life furniture" because I thought that no designer was professionally working on this contemporary theme.
The reason I like this kind of design is that when I'm designing, I feel like I'm running through the wilderness.
There are few examples, so I can have the freedom to the design and focus on my own design.

A body activation stool : Swing, which won the Silver Award in 2022, has attracted a lot of attention as a new concept chair that promotes physical activity while sitting, in today's world where working from home has become commonplace. Next, I would like to take advantage of Swing's suspension mechanism to design furniture other than stools.
I usually work by myself in the design development stage. Once I decided next stage, I will organize a team by necessary members at the stage of production.
I am thinking about designing lighting fixtures based on the concept of feeling nature indoors.
Unlike the “wild nature” felt by ancient humans, the “small nature” felt by modern people in this age of urbanization and digitalization appears in small moments in everyday life. I would like to design something that allows people to feel that nature. This may be an attempt to bring back Japanese culture, which has valued a lifestyle that feels the four seasons, to the present day.

Grand Interview
22 October 2025 · Consentable MT Dining Table
Traditional Japanese rooms,Washitsu embody a unique lifestyle and way of thinking that is characteristic of the Japanese people. For example, Washitsu do not have a fixed role and are typically used in different ways depending on the situation. Placing a “goshen” (a small table with four legs used as a tray for dishes) in a Washitsu turns it into a dining area, placing a ‘futon’ (a set of a mattress and a blanket used for sleeping) turns it into a bedroom, and arranging “zabuton” (cushions for sitting) turns it into a living room. Washitsu have almost no fixed functions, but precisely because of this, they can be used in any way. Additionally, Washitsu have a “closet” (a storage room) that typically stores futons and zabuton, but when needed, these items can be spread out in the room to fulfill its intended function. In Consentable MT, this concept is applied to the dining table. In other words, it is not limited to the single function of a dining table but can serve various purposes such as writing, PC work, charging smart-phones or family gatherings. By retrieving items like lunch mats, paper, pens, or a notebook PC from the drawers as needed, it can fulfill diverse roles. This allows family members to spend various types of time at this multi-purpose table as needed. Beyond mealtimes, it can serve as a study desk for children or a workstation for the father's PC tasks, fostering casual conversations and becoming a hub for family interaction.
As many people who use PCs or smartphones at home may have noticed, the digitalization of daily life has led to a tangled mess of cables around power outlets, often covered in dust and difficult to clean. This is inevitable, as we rely on cables for smartphones, laptops, external hard drives, digital cameras, CD players, and more. However, no fundamental solution to this cable clutter problem seemed available. Therefore, I decided to function the dining table as a cable hub and organize the cables. By connecting a single power strip cable from the power outlet, passing it through the cable grooves on the legs of it, and housing the power strip's outlets in the drawer under the tabletop, I made the dining table function as a power station for various digital devices. In terms of design, I prioritized the ability to store and retrieve each digital device while the wiring was connected, while also aiming for a refined appearance where the wiring was barely visible from the outside.
“Youbi” is a woodworking studio based in Okayama Prefecture, my hometown. Located in Nishi-awakura Village, a region renowned for its hinoki cypress production, the studio employs skilled young craftsmen who create furniture by hand, producing a wide range of high-quality wooden furniture. I have been captivated by the freshness of the wood and the forest-like aroma that emanate from the furniture crafted by “Youbi.”At the IFFT Tokyo 2015 exhibition, when I first met Mr. Oshima, the representative of “Youbi,” I asked him to take on the Consentable MT project, and he kindly agreed, which was the starting point for this project.Later, I visited the woodworking studio in Nishikura and was guided through the nearby forest. I learned that even after being cut, wood continues to breathe and absorb moisture, making it, in a sense, a living entity. I also learned that using hard metal nails on delicate wood could potentially reduce the long-term quality and performance of the wood. Through this experience, I came to understand that traditional Japanese techniques are the accumulation of profound wisdom from our ancestors, based on the premise of long-term use of wood and characterized by extreme rationality. In other words, it was not just about exceptional technical skill, but also the accumulated wisdom of handling wood, the primary material for Japanese houses, furniture, and tableware for hundreds of years, that constitutes traditional techniques, and this is the technology that “Youbi” values.
During the Consentable MT production process, when I visited the "Youbi" woodworking studio and the forest in Nishi-awakura, I learned about the challenges facing Japan's forests. In Japan's forests, it is common to see rows of coniferous trees such as cedar and cypress, but these conifers were planted about 50 years ago under government policy to meet the demand for wooden houses and other structures. Cedar and cypress require 40 to 50 years to grow into usable timber, so now is actually the time to utilize these mature conifers as timber. However, due to the sharp decline in wooden housing and the inability to compete with imported timber prices, the domestic forestry industry has declined. In such circumstances, many areas of coniferous forests have been left untouched, with trees growing densely and blocking sunlight from reaching the ground, thereby beginning to negatively impact the forest ecosystem. In this situation, it is important to use domestic cypress wood whenever possible, as this could create opportunities to revitalize the forestry industry. While Consentable MT can only make a small contribution, I hope that by sharing this information, the situation may improve to some extent.
Consentable MT is an application of the concept of Consentable WT, a PC-specific work desk developed in 2014, to a dining table. After developing a mock-up, we exhibited it at IFFT Tokyo 2015. While using high-quality domestic cypress wood significantly improved the quality, it also made the product very expensive. Since it was not a typical price point, I had given up on selling it. However, in 2022, someone who had taken an interest in Consentable’s activities approached me with the idea of scaling up the Consentable WT and placing an order, prompting us to reconsider productization. This became a crucial breakthrough, leading to our submission to the A’Design Award, where we won a Bronze award and received recognition. I am deeply grateful to the person who placed the order.
In today's digitalized society, communicating via digital tools such as social media and messaging apps has become a part of everyday life. The same is true for communicating with family members. In Japan (especially in urban areas such as Tokyo), busy lifestyles and individualism have become more prevalent, and it is not uncommon for family members to be unable to eat meals together. Thinking about it, meal times were once the only time when families would gather together regularly. However, when that time disappears, each person returns to their own room to continue working or chat with friends on social media or messaging apps, and before long, it becomes commonplace for families to have fewer opportunities to gather together. In such a situation, I wondered if a dining table could be designed to allow families to spend time together beyond meal times, thereby naturally creating opportunities for them to gather. In other words, if family members could continue their work on a laptop or charge their phones while checking social media at the dining table, they could spend a little time there, and casual conversations would naturally arise. To create such a table that serves as a hub for the family, I designed a multi-purpose table with wiring functions and device storage capabilities.Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
In Japanese living culture, there is a tradition called “ichirin-zashi”, where seasonal cut flowers are arranged in a small vase in a corner of the room to enjoy the changing seasons. This culture left a strong impression on the French philosopher Sartre when he visited Japan, and it is said that he felt a unique Japanese aesthetic sense in the custom of arranging cut flowers. The Consentable MT also features a “ichirin-zashi vase” in the center of the tabletop. This was designed with the intention of creating a space where family members can gather and communicate more easily by having a vase of flowers arranged by a family member. The unique “ichirin-zashi vase”, which seems to grow out of the tabletop, will add a charming touch to the family's daily life. That is my hope.
The wiring management system of Consentable MT is designed to blend with the traditional wooden table design. In traditional wooden tables, a structural material called “Arizan” is placed in the center of the tabletop in the longitudinal direction to prevent warping of the solid tabletop and fix it in place. In Consentable MT, the OA tap cables are routed through the leg wiring channels along the “Arizan” structure to the lower central part of the tabletop. The OA tap's power outlet is housed in the central drawer, allowing for flexible wiring to various seating areas. Additionally, each drawer features a slit-shaped opening approximately 5mm wide, allowing power cables to be easily routed onto the tabletop through this opening, for example, when charging a smartphone on the tabletop. In this way, we aimed for a simple design that retains the traditional form of furniture while incorporating wiring functionality in invisible areas.
I use Consentable MT at home, and I feel that my family now spends more time gathered around the table than before. While it is used for meals, each family member also uses Consentable MT for small PC tasks, mobile phone charging, or document work, making it a natural gathering spot in daily life and fostering casual conversations. For example, placing a dandelion flower picked nearby in the central vase can spark various conversations as everyone gathers around it. If I imagine the days when we had a regular dining table instead of Consentable MT, I think we would have avoided using the dining table for tasks like PC work that require wiring, and instead done them in individual rooms. Thinking about it that way, I really feel that Consentable MT is functioning as a natural hub for the family. I’m very satisfied with its role.
Traditional techniques are a treasure trove of human wisdom, and I believe they may hold various technologies and effects that modern people are unaware of. Therefore, I think it is a great pity to limit traditional techniques to traditional crafts alone. By actively incorporating them into modern functional products, we can better appreciate the wisdom of our ancestors and the power of natural materials. Through the act of actually using traditional techniques in new ideas and designs, I have come to realize that design concepts can expand significantly. I would like to continue exploring this further.

One of the characteristics of traditional Japanese crafts is the concept of “Unintentional Beauty”. This refers to a natural beauty that emerges from the process of processing natural materials with minimal interference, allowing their inherent vitality to shine through, rather than artificially arranging them to create beauty. The finish of the Consentable WT Ao embodies this philosophy, combining the unique grain of cherry wood with a transparent indigo dye reminiscent of the depths of the ocean, resulting in a unique, serene beauty.Users can work on their PCs with a calm mindset, gazing at this serene beauty beneath them. Especially since the structure allows cables that are usually a nuisance to be neatly tucked away beneath the tabletop, this expression is further emphasized. As a result, users can enjoy PC work in a noise-free, clean environment, truly feeling at relax.
Many people who use PCs or smartphones at home may have noticed this, but on the table surface and around power outlets, numerous cables become tangled, dust accumulates, and cleaning becomes extremely difficult—a situation that has left me feeling frustrated. On the desk, there are various devices such as a notebook PC, smartphone, external hard drive, smartphone charger, small digital camera, and CD player, all of which require cables. It’s only natural that there are so many cables. However, I couldn’t find a table designed to fundamentally solve this cable issue. That’s why I decided to design Consentable WT myself. In designing it, I prioritized the ability to store and retrieve each digital device while the cables were connected, while also aiming for a sleek design where almost no cables are visible from the outside. As a result, by using the cable grooves in the legs to store a single power strip under the tabletop, I was able to achieve a very simple design.
By creating a wiring space measuring 1050mm in width, 100mm in depth, and 75mm in height at the back of the tabletop to accommodate the O A tap, we were able to store all the wiring under the tabletop while still allowing easy access to the digital devices from any position on the tabletop without the wiring being noticeable. At the same time, by simply placing a wooden cover over the wiring space, we were able to prevent dust from entering the space and, when rewiring, easily access the power supply by opening the wooden cover. Although the wooden cover is frequently opened and closed, it is simply placed on top without hinges, so there is no risk of it breaking.
In 2014, I unveiled a piece called Consentable WT, which was simply finished with oil, and it was well-received by many people. The functionality that allows wiring on the tabletop to be organized simply and beautifully resulted in a clean, noise-free tabletop, which in turn contributed to a calm and focused PC work environment—this aspect was particularly appreciated. One day, a designer friend of mine started a brand called "Ao." and began creating various indigo finish woodworking pieces, so I had the opportunity to visit their exhibition. There, I saw a large living room table with a solid cypress tabletop dyed in indigo, which was truly beautiful. The moment I saw it, I thought it was an amazing piece. I then asked them if they could apply the indigo dyeing process to Consentable WT, and they kindly agreed, leading to the creation of Consentable WT+Ao. The excitement I felt when the first WT+Ao mockup was completed is unforgettable. The cherry wood grain, dyed in indigo, had a metallic luster and resembled the ripples on a calm water surface, evoking the aesthetic of a Zen temple's dry landscape garden.
In my research on urban design at university and in brand space design at Hakuhodo, the common keyword is “experience.” I strongly resonated with the idea that urban planning is not just a desk-based plan but is completed through the various activities and experiences of the people living in the city (an idea symbolized by C. Alexander's phrase “The city is not a tree”). In brand space design, I came to believe that creating an attractive spatial experience for visitors enhances their affinity for the brand. In other words, I am deeply interested in the idea that design, while taking a specific form, ultimately serves to provide users with some form of “experience.” At Consentable, we place a strong emphasis on how to deliver such “experiences” through design. Consentable WT Ao is designed to provide a beautiful experience of “working on a PC in a very calm and beautiful state of mind.”
I believe that it is truly remarkable that the traditional Japanese dyeing technique of indigo dyeing has been able to add value to modern PCworkers by allowing them to work on their PCs with a sense of calm and beauty. This is because it has proven that the value of “natural beauty,” which lies in the Japanese aesthetic sense of bringing out the goodness of natural materials, is still relevant today.I have always resonated with the idea that traditional techniques become timeless precisely because they evolve continuously to meet the needs of the times, and I believe this concept is reflected in the evaluation of Consentable WT Ao.
Functionally, I designed the tabletop to accommodate not only wiring but also devices, allowing everything to be stored beneath the tabletop. However, I also took care to ensure the tabletop remained thin. The goal was to create a table that appears simple on the surface but can actually accommodate various items. I aimed for a design that minimizes thickness by carefully considering the depth of each space and the structure of the lids. The result is a simple, unassuming appearance that I am very satisfied with.
Designer Yo Miyachi and craftsman Ryosuke Tanaka are part of the brand Ao, which specializes in indigo-dyed woodwork. They have developed a technique for dyeing various wooden furniture pieces with natural indigo, creating beautiful indigo-dyed woodwork, including tables, chairs, and recycled furniture.Consentable WT Ao would not have been possible without their indigo-dyed woodwork technology. In particular, the indigo-dyed hinoki table I saw at their first exhibition was exceptionally beautiful, so I immediately requested its adoption for Consentable WT. As a result, their collaboration became a significant driving force in creating the more beautiful Consentable WT Ao.
Since the development of Consentable WT, numerous types of PC work desks for digital professionals have been developed, and if our work has had any influence on this evolution, we consider it a great honor. The original concept behind Consentable WT was, “If a table were to be created for the first time in this era, what kind of design would it have?” Historically, the functional form of tables has remained largely unchanged since the dawn of civilization around 3500 BCE. However, this universal table design may now be ready for change in the face of the digital revolution. If this design can become a catalyst for transforming the shape of tables in the future, that would be truly fascinating.
Traditional techniques are a treasure trove of human wisdom, and they may hold various techniques and effects that modern people are unaware of. Therefore, I think it is a great waste to limit traditional techniques to traditional crafts pieces alone. By actively incorporating them into modern functional products, we can realize the wisdom of our ancestors and the power of natural materials. In addition to indigo-dyed woodwork, I have recently begun design studies on Sappanwood-dye wine glasses, and their beauty is so profound and mysterious that it defies description. Through the act of actually using traditional techniques, I have come to realize that design ideas can expand greatly. I highly recommend giving it a try.
