Design Legend Interview

5 January 2025

Designer Interview

8 July 2024

I have always enjoyed expressing my thoughts. Drawing has been my dream and my favorite form of expression since I was young. The choices I made in my teenage years have become the belief and driving force behind my work to this day. I love the act of drawing itself. In particular, the painting techniques that allow me to directly express imagined scenes and the digital painting that lets me freely use various colors and expressions each have their own unique charms. These methods provide diverse ways of expression. I enjoy both methods and the act of expression through drawing. One of my dreams is to draw for my entire life. Since it is a profession that brings me happiness, I wanted to become an artist.

I established a studio to embark on a new challenge. Named , it views everyone's dreams in the form of cubes, each becoming its own space and element. My studio encompasses everything needed in the art genres, including character design, branding, illustration, exhibitions, and planning. There are artists who plan and execute projects together, and we created this studio to move towards our dreams together.

To me, design is a form of expressing thoughts. It should encapsulate reality and be easily understood without needing explanation. It should be visually appealing, and in the case of products, should provide a high level of satisfaction when used. From the perspective of creating art through design, it is a challenging task yet a process that leads towards happiness. While I often directly translate my imaginative ideas into tangible elements of reality, there are times when I enjoy expressing them metaphorically or in ways that evoke emotions in people. This versatility is one of the pleasures for an artist.

My favorite artistic design method involves hiding stories within the artwork. If there's a main story, I enjoy embedding various hidden elements within the piece, hoping that the audience will discover them. This approach is one of my ways of expressing art and a crucial element in my creative process. The power of storytelling is immense. Just like in life, if a piece of art contains narratives about experiences that resonate with everyone, its value becomes truly special.

22 November 2024 · Tiger Spirit Digital Media Art

Creating video artworks like media art requires developing both static images and separate video work, making the process quite intensive. In this project, I utilized a variety of completely different elements to create a unique form of art that incorporates traditional aspects in new ways. As a Korean artist, I have always been interested in creating works that employ traditional techniques. This project provided me with numerous opportunities to further develop these techniques. I was also able to expand my methods by integrating animals and nature into new expressive forms, extending my approach into the realm of media art.

To display artwork on a large media tower, high-resolution rendered video is essential. This process starts with creating high-quality image pieces. I begin with the planning and sketching stages, drawing out initial ideas that I then convert into digital files using Photoshop. Specific elements that require movement are isolated and turned into separate objects. Once all image components are ready, I bring them into a 3D program to add lifelike motion. Afterward, I complete the video with final color correction and special effects, such as swirling snow or falling petals, before rendering it in high quality. This media art piece offers a dynamic experience distinct from static 2D images, further enriched with music, enhancing its artistic significance and value.

South Korea is a country with four distinct seasons, and its national animal, the tiger, is deeply embedded in the country's folklore and mythology. To create a piece that symbolizes Korea and embraces nature, I chose the concept of the four seasons. This seasonal change evokes a sense of life’s journey and the passage of time. My hope was for all these elements to flow together seamlessly. By combining traditional Korean techniques with modern technology, I aimed to create media art that not only reflects my unique perspective but also resonates with those who appreciate Korean culture, offering both a sense of connection and visual enjoyment. Including symbolic animals and the theme of time brings depth to the piece, enhancing its cultural relevance.

I have always had a strong affinity for traditional Korean painting styles, having grown up surrounded by traditional Korean artwork and developing a deep interest in Korea's rich cultural heritage. I’ve often pondered how to bring traditional techniques, like ink wash painting, into a modern context in my art. This journey led me to my current digital painting approach. The process begins with the creation of base textures using traditional tools—brushes and ink—to capture the essence of traditional brush strokes. Next, I sketch and outline the drawing offline, which I then digitize by scanning. In the third step, I digitally refine the outline, followed by color application in Photoshop in the fourth step. In the fifth step, I combine all these elements—textural brush and ink strokes, digital lines, and painting—into a cohesive piece, adjusting lighting and making additional corrections for depth. The next stages involve preparing the artwork for animation. In the sixth step, I separate each element into individual objects. In the seventh step, I animate these objects using specific software, creating a dynamic scene through rendering. Finally, in the eighth step, I enhance the video with special effects and edit it in Premiere Pro to bring it all together. This is my complete process for producing a dynamic digital art piece that embodies both traditional and modern influences.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a challenging time for everyone. During this period, I had the opportunity to showcase my artwork at Starfield City, one of the largest department stores in Korea, where it was displayed across all Starfield City locations on 388 media towers and screens. I wanted to present the tiger, a traditional Korean symbol, to the Korean people through my work. This event remains a special memory for many in Korea. The tiger symbolizes health and good fortune, offering protection and inspiring hope during difficult times. My artwork was created with these same meanings, and I strived to instill it with positive energy to bring hope to the people of Korea.

The planning, composition, and production processes for this project were different from my previous works. To achieve this, I had to seek help from new experts and engage in extensive discussions to share experiences and insights. It was essential to find the best ways and environment to fully express my artwork, and it was also important to convey the right atmosphere through music. This project was truly a new challenge for me.

The artwork is designed so that as viewers shift their gaze from the bottom to the top, they experience the seasons in order: spring, summer, fall, and winter. This concept was planned with the 20-meter-tall media tower in mind. Since people view the piece from below the tower, their gaze naturally travels upward. The artwork aligns with this perspective and is brought to life as a media art video, featuring effects like flower petals blowing in spring and snowflakes falling in winter to create a dynamic, immersive experience.

An artist can achieve many things beyond creating their artwork, but when it comes to specialized areas, differences in quality and detail can emerge. To bring my envisioned work to life, elements that would enhance its vibrancy were essential—these included animation, music, and video production. Each aspect added significant meaning to the overall piece, and because the project was thoroughly planned from concept to execution, the final result came out well.

Since this work was created with the consideration of selling as an NFT, sharing it with NFT sales platforms was also an important aspect. It was necessary to create the artwork in advance to fit the platform's requirements, while also carefully setting the quantity and meaning to maintain its unique value. The media art piece, created along with music, was presented in a way that enhanced its appeal and value to consumers. This approach also added a new direction to the future of art, making it highly meaningful.

Through winning the A Design Award, I was able to reflect on the expression methods and the level of completion of this project. I was able to express Korean traditional animals, nature, and the four seasons in the artwork, and the use of various programs to make the images move in the video helped elevate the potential of the work to a higher level. This project was a meaningful experience as it allowed me to share the value and significance of the artwork not only online but also offline, with people.

Grand Interview

22 November 2024 · S-oil Total Calendar Illustration

Creating artworks using entirely different elements is a new challenge and a discovery of possibilities. As a Korean artist, I have always been interested in creating works using traditional techniques. The S-oil Total Calendar project gave me the opportunity to explore and develop these techniques in new ways. When translating thoughts into action, the results sometimes turn out differently than expected. Initially, I planned to apply this method of expression to figures, but as I continuously upgraded my expression techniques, I also expanded the scope of the subjects.

The core concept of this project was to create a new type of calendar for an oil company. I began by researching and analyzing the various elements related to refined petroleum. I soon realized that petroleum is used in many more areas than I initially thought. After that, I started considering how to align these elements with the seasons and the environment. I also imagined applying these elements to various machines. Given how humanity's discovery and use of oil led to rapid industrialization, I realized that capturing this history within the artwork would have great meaning and value, and this insight became my inspiration.

The most important aspect I consider in expressing my project’s artwork is balance. Finding the best harmony between the design and the necessary elements to achieve the desired outcome is one of the key aspects of my creative process. In this project, the main focus was to express both the environmental elements and the machines being utilized. I aimed to capture the powerful force and smooth harmony that overcomes all environmental challenges within the artwork.

Winning the A Design Award allowed me to reflect on the expression methods and the overall completion of this project. Exploring how refined petroleum provided by the refinery is utilized, and how machines such as cars, motorcycles, and trucks overcome environmental challenges to harness energy, presented a unique way of expression. This was a rewarding experience, and the ability to incorporate a narrative made it even more meaningful.

The key to this project’s composition was to tell the story of each part through images. For the scene where the truck is driving, I chose the concept of it moving through the city, incorporating both day and night environments. I carefully considered how different color schemes could enhance the overall composition. At night, the vehicle’s lights had to harmonize with the chosen colors, while during the day, I used colors that would be easily recognizable and intuitive. Following the color scheme, the next important element was depth. Since these works were meant to express energy, it was crucial to convey a sense of space and liveliness in each scene. For each concept, I added shapes as background elements, designing the composition to break through and emerge from those shapes.

While expressing the main elements along with the background is a natural approach, combining them with other elements can create challenges when transforming them into a cohesive artwork. The fusion of traditional brush and ink techniques with digital methods was a new challenge and a fresh way of expression. Tradition, when well-executed, brings out something novel, but if done poorly, it can appear outdated. Therefore, I focused on creating a vibrant color palette while allowing the brushstrokes to blend seamlessly. I carefully incorporated color into the brushstrokes and ink effects, dividing the work into touch effects based on a black or white background, depending on the elements and the surrounding context.

To convey a dynamic sense of modern transportation, I incorporated speed lines and similar effects throughout the artwork. Using digital lines and brushstrokes, I expressed the flow and movement of these vehicles. Additionally, I added stylish effects, such as the impact on the ground and the motion of the wheels as the vehicles race forward. By applying varying colors and textures to each element, I maximized the visual impact and enhanced the overall effect of the artwork.

The best way to meet both artistic expression and brand identity requirements is by telling a story through the artwork. When the history of the brand and the narrative of its products are incorporated, it transforms into a work of art with new value. The strength of the story is amplified depending on how the composition and direction of the elements are arranged. By combining traditional Korean techniques, materials, and digital graphics, I created a new form of artwork that merges these different modes of expression.

The allure of cars lies in their energy, speed, and vibrancy. Car enthusiasts have an instinctive craving for speed and the thrill of the chase. To achieve faster speeds, power is essential, driven by the machine's inherent strength and the fuel that powers it. For the lively aspect, I used a sedan to represent smoothness and comfort, while large trucks were used to express raw power and strength. To convey the agile speed, I chose motorcycles, showcasing various forms of automotive culture.

Tradition is a unique value that must be preserved. Even in an era where digital artworks and outcomes are produced, the value of history and tradition will remain and must be protected. This movement is essential even in commercial illustration, and my works and projects will serve as proof of that value. Just as there is no present or future without the past, humanity must always use and preserve the good experiences and values of the past as we move forward. I hope this project will be remembered as a great example in the field of commercial illustration.

Grand Interview

22 November 2024 · Wbc2017 South Korea Illustration

I have always loved traditional Korean painting styles. Naturally, I grew up admiring Korean art and have a strong interest in the country's diverse cultural heritage. I've often thought about how to apply traditional styles like ink wash painting to my work in a modern way. This led me to develop my current digital painting technique. First, I create base textures using traditional Korean brushes and ink to capture the initial strokes. Second, I sketch the drawing and add line work, doing the initial sketch offline, which I then scan digitally. In the third step, I use the scanned sketch image to refine the line work digitally. Fourth, I proceed with the coloring process in Photoshop. For the final stage, I combine the textures created from brush and ink strokes with the digital drawing and painting. During this merging process, I also make adjustments to lighting, color correction, and other post-production elements to complete the artwork.

In Korea, there’s a tradition where people visit the East Sea every January 1st to watch the sunrise, symbolizing hope for the new year. Korea’s rich cultural heritage is reflected in various historical monuments, and, in recent years, new landmark buildings featuring advanced technologies have also emerged. I aim to express the value of both past and modern architecture in my artwork, seeing them as embodying the essence of Korean identity.

In my artwork, I included the Four Guardian Gods from Korean mythology (Black Tortoise, Blue Dragon, White Tiger, and Red Phoenix) to represent the cardinal directions—North, East, South, and West. I also placed the national flower, the Mugunghwa (Rose of Sharon), at the base to symbolize the ever-blooming energy of athletes. This concept reflects the idea of sharing legendary stories passed down through folklore, as embedding these tales in my work is like recording history itself. I designed the piece to be viewed from various angles, prompting reflection on the perspectives of both the past and the present.

In traditional Korean art, there are various types of brushes, including Saepil (細筆, fine brush), Ganpil (簡筆, simple brush), Chopil (抄筆, sketch brush), Daepil (大筆, large brush), and Akpil (額筆, framing brush). The production methods also vary, such as bundled brushes, milji-jjim brushes, mushimpil (unconscious brush), and yushimpil (intentional brush). I select the most suitable brush based on the qualities needed for my artwork and use it with ink on paper. The textures I create are then scanned to preserve them as digital data, and the original brushstrokes on paper are carefully stored in a separate archival portfolio.

My artwork is meticulously crafted with a left-right symmetrical composition, an essential aspect that symbolizes harmony and balance within the elements of Korean tradition. By integrating natural aspects representing the universe—such as the cardinal directions (East, West, South, North), black and white, and the four seasons—the piece blends these foundational elements with distinctly Korean influences, creating a completely new style. This unique approach allows the artwork to convey a story, imbuing it with its own inherent value. I believe that an artwork with timeless value has the power to resonate with people from all walks of life, conveying profound meaning universally.

Korea’s national flower, the Mugunghwa (hibiscus), is known for its unique ability to bloom once each day. This requires an incredible amount of energy, which is no easy feat for any plant. With its resilience and strength, the Mugunghwa embodies Korea’s potential and enduring value. I wanted to reflect these qualities in the figures of Korean athletes, projecting the flower’s strength and effort into the spirit of those who represent the country. The Mugunghwa, as Korea’s national symbol, is one of the most fitting ways to express Korea's essence and its power of growth.

Combining athletes with their backgrounds can naturally create a seamless composition, a setting that feels familiar and relatable to anyone viewing it. However, blending sports figures with entirely new, unrelated elements introduces complexity to the artistic process. I believe that each piece should convey a story, not only requiring time to create but also embedding a layer of historical significance. Creating a work that represents a country is no easy task. Therefore, producing pieces that bring together Korea’s cherished cultural heritage, national symbols, and athletic spirit is both a challenge and an exploration of possibilities. Despite any obstacles, if a piece can showcase Korea’s essence and values, the effort is profoundly meaningful.

In Korea, there is a rich tradition of ink-based art, with ink wash painting (sumukhwa) being a prime example. The most authentic way to showcase sumukhwa is by using hanji, also known as dak paper, an ancient Korean paper known for its exceptional quality. Hanji enables a more traditional approach to expressing brush and ink strokes. Beyond hanji, using various types of paper for brushstrokes has allowed me to bring unique textures into my work. When combined with digital coloring, these brushstroke effects enhance the artwork, adding vibrancy and a lifelike quality to each piece.

This has become a signature element of my work. It serves as a means to express my thoughts as an artist and as one of the ways I embed my unique values into my creations. Winning the A Design Award helped solidify my perspective on my artwork, and I truly believe it has had a very positive impact on my creations.

Korea’s culture is currently loved by many countries, and I am truly grateful for and cherish this fact. I believe that when works featuring traditional Korean elements are shared with others, it carries great significance. Additionally, I think the interest people have in Korea’s cultural heritage, coupled with the visual information and meaning conveyed through art, can spark new curiosity and excitement. The WBC 2017 work, which expresses positive energy through sports figures, was created with the intent to faithfully capture the charm of sports, a genre that builds new history. I hope that more works like this will emerge, creating synergy with sports culture. This is because the appeal of sports, the efforts of athletes, and the way these are expressed through culture and history in artworks will introduce something new to many people.
