Design Interview

16 May 2022 · Marilyn Table

the main inspiration was Marilyn and her legendary scene in the movie "The seven year itch" but also my Venetian memories in the Fortuny palace and the legendary Delphos dress created by the master.

the main objective was to create a table with a different design than usual and with the peculiarity of being able to adapt to different environments and decorations. The base of the table is inspired by fashion and is in fact conceived as a garment of which you can choose the color before purchasing or possibly replace over time.

The projects are many because this design is already enjoying great success in Asia and Europe and it will surely be appreciated in new markets especially after this victory and confirmation of good design.

For the project I normally take a few days between the idea and its design but for the control of the details and the correct measurements and proportions it is a continuous step that reaches up to the prototyping which I would say is the most important verification moment where it takes a few months to get there .

the project comes from an inspiration and from the sum of my experiences and intuitions but also very often from Needs that have not been satisfied. Very often, as in this case, it is I who proposed the project to the company knowing that the same worked very well and in an artisanal way the leather, the material of which the table skirt is made.

Yes my design is produced by a company that believed in this project

I noticed that in many cases the design of a table did not fit into the context in which it was optimally inserted. I wanted to create a modern design by taking advantage of the possibility of using a large palette of colors using the elegance of the tanned leather so that it could harmonize with the single environment in which the table was placed.

My favorite designers come from Italy and they are the ones who have made the history of design, one above all.? Achille Castiglioni

It is a target that gathers various age ranges because the table can transform itself and express different sensations based on the color or material of the top used. It can become a modern or classic piece at the same time and this is its winning secret.

Is one of a kind and for this I am proud of it

It is the name of the famous sexy icon Marilyn Monroe and wants to remember her figure, her beauty and also the famous scene in the movie "The seven year itch" where her pleated skirt rises and reveals her wonderful legs.

Any tool that can make me understand shapes and proportions

The unique aspect is to have abstracted the design of a dress to make it a table

I worked with leather artisans who allowed me to create my design flawlessly, improving its shapes and reducing waste

Here the technology iscraftsmanship of the workmanship

It was a market analysis and personal observations

The biggest challenge is to make the client understand your project and keep faith with the initial idea without upsetting the project during the implementation phase.

I decided to participate because I believe in and because I recognize A 'Design Awards as a competition that can help to understand and maintain a high level of world design.

In this job I learned how to work the material, especially the leather and how to work by playing with the shadows and lights between the aspects of my design.

I would like to say to get used to abstracting a thought, an image or an emotion and a good conceptual and design exercise

Design Legend Interview

16 May 2022

I attended the University of Architecture in Venice and I worked for important architects and designers and then opened my own professional studio.
Having worked in a city like Venice has shaped my way of designing and considering the asymmetries as a design inspiration for my work. Venice par excellence and a city of assymetries.

I became a designer because I felt the need to express myself freely through the design of individual objects and because as an architect, in addition to the design of the house, customers also asked me for the interior design even in details like the design of a door handle .

I draw everything. in this I am very eclectic

I'm not a legend and you do not need to be a legend to become good designers. seriousness and professionalism and a dose of madness are everything

the difference and the time. when an object exceeds the decades it means that it was designed by a great designer

good design is recognized first by the beauty of the object and then by its functionality.

the value of a good design and its quality of use; functionality, beauty and innovation.

I would like to design innovative digital systems applied to the objects I designed

I would like to create a large eco-sustainable architectural complex

the secret of my projects I believe is and remains the imaginative and dream capacity that allows me to remain a little child.

the great masters of the desig for me from Italian were: Achille Castiglioni, Carlo Mollino, Vico magistretti, Carlo Scarpa and many others ...

I really like the simple, clean and immediate design. the purity of the form must follow its functionality.

I have always liked the Thalia washbasin project and its design since I designed its first shapes. I believe that achieved a good level of creativity, functionality and innovation.

to be good designers you have to look always and see everything that is not design. exactly the opposite of what they teach at school

I think I would have
made the photoreporter.

design and like a beautiful woman.

nobody supported me I had to always believe in myself.

curiosity and eclecticism

make believe that my projects were valid

all means of expression must be used to best present one's work. Often normal people have difficulty understanding a design.

the next project will be an innovative concept that I still can't talk about

there is no final goal because every project is a new goal for me

professionalism and ability to listen to their requests and translate them into a project

through design, people's lives can be improved. very often designers focus only on form and not on function, forgetting people's needs.

I'm working on a collection of sofas

all my projects give me satisfaction because they are my children to whom I have given my life, my time and my love

I would like to eliminate the concept of disposable in the world of design to reappropriate a design concept that would consider the long life of the product and its reusability

design will enter the digital and virtual world.

difficult to say because it depends a lot on the project and the customer.

I always start from a dream or a vision. this is always the most beautiful moment, together with the physical realization of the idea

Freedom ... to think, create, experiment

today and the exact opposite, unfortunately, are the trends that influence design. few designers and few companies have the courage to do this.

improve my design

all the means of expression I use, from paper and pencil, to drawing software, to the plastic in three dimensions

and an important role design is not only a form but a choice of the right materials and colors, this is called "harmony"

beauty, style and functionality

I want to try right away if it's functional

Yes, I believe it, but I think it's not easy. we must find a person with elective affinities

people of culture and travelers, people with an open mind

all the books by Bruno Munari and Giò Ponti

studying a lot and looking and observing the design of others and of the great masters

with Jesus Christ.

we must always remain humble. after all it's a job like any other, we're not super heroes

my favorite color and blue, the place is a Greek island, the favorite dish and pasta, season and spring and the brand and Ferrari.

the funniest note was that a company wanted my projects and drawings but did not want to pay me.

know that I can create and put my dreams and ideas into reality and fantastic. this is the engine that keeps me enthusiastically going every day.

no, I wanted to be a fireman

we'll make love with an alien

I would like them to know that behind every project there is a lot of study and much thought and that everything always starts from a little intuition that is present in our unconscious and this comes from our previous experiences and is stratified in our brain. so I would like to say that my design is the result of my life experiences and the objects they see reflect m

Designer Interview

16 May 2022

I was confronted with the design because in my architecture I liked to take care of the details. In the 50s and 60s in Italy, architect and designer were the same thing. It is natural for me to design a house or an object.

My studio deals with architecture and design between Italy and China where I opened a studio two years ago.My design research always looks for a strong focus on the details and on the uniqueness of the project

for me design and an exercise in the study of form and function connected in a single object that must express its own soul.

I like to design spaces for architecture

my favorite design concerns the Italian period between the 50s and 60s.Achille Castiglioni, Carlo Mollino, Vico Magistretti, Marco Zanuso, Bruno Munari, Carlo Scarpa ..

bathroom sink

my favorite materials have always been natural

in the early morning I feel more creative, because I can put the dreams of the evening on paper

Beauty, harmony and functionality.

when I project the emotions are many; anger, happiness, disappointment, discovery. all emotions are concentrated in the project until one reaches a state of complacency and well-being in having reached the perfect form.

I believe that the realization of one's own design is the inclusion of a stratification of thoughts and images that have followed one another over time. I can say that it is the most beautiful magic, the dream that becomes reality.

a successful product becomes such when it reflects form, function and market.

first thing and that a good design should please me and must meet the functional needs related to its function.

the respondability of a designer and that of creating objects that can last over time both in terms of design and in that of their use. we must create objects with recyclable materials or, in my case, use wood from sustainable forests. We must abandon the idea of throw-away and return to an idea of recycling the product.

I believe that design is going along a good path by abandoning the concept of disposable for a conscious design in close contact with the companies for its production respecting the environment that surrounds us.

My last show was in Moscow, the next I would like to do in China.

I am a great observer and this is my greatest inspiration for my design. have a mind open to contamination and important to nurture creativity. I look for inspiration from everything around me. nature and artifice always remain for me an inexhaustible source of inspiration because their boundary creates conflicts and harmonies that stimulate my creativity every day.

my style is simple and immediate, sometimes minimalist. I look for the essence of things as the Japanese teach, but with a purely Italian style.

I live in Italy, the heritage of my country is huge and very often we have a great responsibility to bring along this fortune. I think I'm very lucky to be born in this country. I try to combine my culture with the rest of the world when I design.

I have a good relationship with companies. You always work closely to achieve the best result. Very often the job is hard and tiring to reach the best level. The Italian companies in this support a lot of designers.

companies must learn to recognize talents and support them in the prototyping phase

my design process comes from the company's requests. know how to listen and the first step to achieving good design. What happens next is always a big mess. I do not have a standard process, I jump continuously in temporal and methodological processes. I think it's typical of the Italians.

they are objects collected during my travels, they do not have the name of a designer but they are common objects and for this reason they are very beautiful

the day is made up of very intense rhythms but I always try to carve out a space for research and thought

my advice is to always be curious and great observers, to be sensitive and to have the ability to get emotional in front of the beauty. Always remember that beauty and functionality travel in constant relationship.

the positive aspect is that we are free to create and the negative one that today there is strong competition from very good colleagues

simplicity and beauty

seriousness and professionalism in their work are the basis and the departure for a future of success, remembering to mix everything with a little 'madness.

all that you need; every means of expression must be used to explain the project, from the drawing by hand, to the three-dimensional design software, up to the 3D printer. Personal culture, and intuition are important to give birth to ideas and projects.

you have to set time for the design and objectives to be achieved, this is the secret to keep everything under control and manage the projects.

it depends on many factors and the type of object, and it is difficult to answer.

they ask me to design successful products

The first important experience in Venice in an architecture and design studio, the second in the companies in contact with production and the third in China.

Individuals and companies in the sector

I like to design not only the object but also the direction that the company must take in order to sell and propose it.

create a new collection

now I have a team of very good guys but for a long time I have worked in solitude.

at the moment I am planning a large exhibition complex in china

Grand Interview

22 November 2024 · Marilyn Table

I have always been a movie buff and the image of Marilyn Monroe's skirt rising under the jet of air in the subway has always had an evocative force and a unique aesthetic and it is precisely from the observation of that scene and the fluttering of the skirt that the idea of the Marilyn table was born, applying the concept of wearability and femininity to a piece of furniture. The company for which I made this table is specialized in the processing of leather so it was natural to make the covering skirt in that material that goes very well with the Carrara marble of the top.

The challenge was to find curvature radii that could meet the characteristics of the leather material without seeking its limit but maintaining a certain softness that could recall the folds of a skirt and at the same time ensure an excellent fit around the table. Many prototypes were made and the cutting and sewing staff helped me a lot in the realization thanks to their experience also because in the realization phase the idea was born that this leather skirt could be removable via a zipper and could be fixed with Velcro thus ensuring easy placement even by the customer in case he wanted to clean it or replace it with another color in the future.

Today's society is very dynamic, it likes to change and live different realities and this is also reflected in the way of living the house. I learned the concept of replaceability from fashion that best represents fashions and trends and I applied it to the world of furniture. Fashion and society run fast and need furniture that can identify with these changes.Marilyn represents all this today. The leather skirt in 49 colors and the top selectable in different types of marble can be adapted to personal styles and tastes creating harmony between the spaces in which it will be positioned and makes it a desirable object

I believe that there will be an increasing return to craftsmanship because we need it and moreover it is part of our culture and must not be lost. I observe that more and more people are attracted to the handmade because it has a soul and a care that machines cannot often transmit. My intent is to innovate design without forgetting the past but enhancing it by creating a special mix that makes the object you fall in love with alive and close. I believe that if you have the opportunity to observe the past while looking towards the future you can innovate without losing continuity and this is the challenge we must accept while keeping the dialogue between the two subjects alive.

I really like working with natural materials and before each project on my work table I have a selection of marbles, woods, leathers and many others. Nature gives us an incredible range of shades. I look at these materials, I touch them, I smell them, I make them mine and through this process some combinations are born almost naturally. The next process is to study the processing that a material can undergo and how it reacts. In the case of the table it was imperative to use leather as the company that made it has specialized in its processing for many years. The leather undergoes a treatment that makes it opaque and therefore in choosing which material to choose for the Top I preferred a Polished Carrara marble to contrast with the leather and make the table exclusive and elegant. Subsequently I developed different color combinations of leather and marbles and I must say that they are all very interesting and offer great possibilities with the furniture that you want to design, therefore working with colors and materials. An interesting aspect that completes the offer and the image of your dining space is the leather of the skirt that can also be used to create chairs so as to make your space unique and unrepeatable.

This is a very interesting question.Let's say that living in China has accustomed me to living the round table on a daily basis, which is rare in Italy. I had designed various tables but never round ones. The circular table in China is part of the culture of this country and there are very specific rituals also for the arrangement of the guests or the relationship with the room where they are welcomed and the relative entrance door. The idea of designing a circular table was therefore born also to accommodate the needs of the Chinese market and to give ideas in those countries where it is not yet very widespread and to suggest an Italian interpretation made of details, noble materials and craftsmanship.

The dimensions of the table reflect the need to have an important table inside your home where you can sit and eat comfortably in 4 people but also to add as many chairs in case of numerous guests. The proportions of the table also arise from an aesthetic need; in this case I wanted the leather skirt to be very evident expressing its character and design but also to hide the generous structure that supports the top and makes everything very safe and stable.

spatial continuity is a theme that is very dear to me as it originates in the architectural field and then reaches the people and furniture that will live in these spaces. Space, form and function are inseparable and if respected they can only create great projects and beauty to be experienced. From this point of view, for me the approach to the creation of an architecture, a table or a handle has the same value and importance and is always in connection with the whole. Every space and every object is charged or is charged with the energies present in a continuous dialogue; in the case of the Marilyn table, the large pleating with its folds and curves welcomes the visitor and what surrounds him to suggest new spatial interpretations and aesthetic dynamics.

to balance sustainability in the realization I always try to calculate with the company that will realize my projects to limit the waste. It seems trivial but it is not always like that. Calculating exactly the cut, the assemblies, the sewing and many other details leads to a reduction in the consumption of material and this is sustainability of the first level. Another aspect of primary importance that escapes many today is to create objects that express beauty and elegance, can last over time, built according to the rules of the art and can be passed from generation to generation contrasting the philosophy of disposable very dear to modern society. In my current home I use a wooden table of my great-grandparents inherited from my family where every day I have the pleasure of having breakfast. this is also sustainability.

The recognition through A design Awards was very useful to give visibility to my project and if it was awarded by a jury evidently the design ideas adopted for the realization were correct and for this reason the market has rewarded the work done and the message that I wanted to communicate. I will continue on this path as I have always done without compromises also trusting my intuitions and the sensitivity that distinguishes me but also exploring new worlds, materials and studying the society that every day gives us great design ideas. A fixed point that I do not want to barter is that of always trying to create a design that can last over time and be recognized.
