Regarding Shi Tea Tray
Shi is a tea tray designed for preparing and serving tea. Shi combines a natural stone disk with an aluminum water chassis. The surface is divided into a flat area and a concave area, with a height difference of 16 millimeters. The flat area stays dry and holds the tea set, while the concave area collects and drains the used water. The drain sits at the lowest point of the concave surface, so the water level remains visible and the tray can be emptied in time. The stone is shaped by computer controlled cutting and finished by sandblasting.

Design Details
- Unique Properties
- Tea tray is usually plane and tea water flows everywhere when using under the condition, which brings inconvenience. The design inspiration comes from bridge, which integrates plane & concave and presents the tension of shape. The concave brings height difference, which not only realizes dry and wet depart, but also can be easy to drain water, while cleverly reminding the state of water storage.
- Inspiration
- Shi is a kind of water storage tea tray, which is made of natural stone and metal (aluminum) water chassis, modeling simple. The disk is designed with drop type through the plane with concave surface, with height difference of 1.6 cm. The plane is used as dry areas, the concave as wet areas, which cleverly realizes tea-making scenarios of dry and wet depart. Besides, for the concave is lower, so we can visually see the tea overflowing from the drain, which prompts the user dumping of tea.
- Research
- The tea tray design belongs to the application research, which object is to guide user behavior through the simplest language form, combining with ways of user interview, focusing group, product usability testing, consumer diary.
- Challenge
- The concave curvature of natural stone plate should not only ensure the high efficiency of drainage, and the realization of modeling, but also satisfy the reminding of water level. Through the virtual simulation and physical model test, the radius of curvature of the concave surface is determined to be 212 mm finally.
- Realization and Technology
- Shi is made of natural stone and aluminum. The natural stone is treated by CNC and water knife cutting molding technology, which surface is realized by sandblasting technology. The aluminum is treated by die drawing and cutting technology, which surface is realized by matte painting.
- Operation and Interaction
- The flat part of the tea tray is placed with the tea set and the concave part is the operating area. The height difference between the plane surface and concave surface allows an efficient drainage. When the water reaches three quarters of the tank, the user can visually observe the water level from the lowest point of the concave surface to facilitate the timely dumping.
- Project Duration and Location
- The project was started in xiamen in February 2019, completed in xiamen in September 2019 and exhibited in Shanghai in October 2019.
