Zhecheng Xu and Yuefeng Zhou acknowledged for safety clothing and personal protective equipment design by the international grand jury of the 2019 - 2020 A' Design Award & Competition

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COMO, Italy, April 22, 2020 /DesignNewswire/ Voronoi Bicycle Helmet by Zhecheng Xu and Yuefeng Zhou, designed for Yuefeng ZHOU,Zhecheng XU,Haiwei WANG, has been granted the Silver A' Design Award in the Safety Clothing and Personal Protective Equipment Design category, A' Design Award & Competition has announced. The recognition forms part of the 2019 - 2020 A' Design Award & Competition and was decided through blind peer review by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members, who evaluated anonymized entries against predetermined criteria.

The Silver A' Design Award Explained

The Silver A' Design Award celebrates top-tier designs that embody excellence and innovation. This award acknowledges creations that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, reflecting the designer's deep understanding and skill. Silver A' Design Award recipients are recognized for their contribution to raising industry standards and advancing the practice of design. Their work often incorporates original innovations and elicits a strong emotional response, making a notable impact on the improvement of everyday life.

Regarding Voronoi Bicycle Helmet

The helmet is inspired by 3D Voronoi structure which is widely distributed in Nature. With a combination of parametric technique and bionics, the bicycle helmet has an improving external mechanical system. It's different from traditional flake protection structure in its unabridged bionic 3D mechanical system. When hit by an external force, this structure shows better stability. At the balance of lightness and safety, the helmet aims to provide people with more comfortable, more fashionable, and safer personal protection bicycle helmet.

About Zhecheng Xu and Yuefeng Zhou

Yuefeng ZHOU is a professional interior designer and artist currently based in Nanjing China. His work focuses mainly on interior design, industrial design, and corporate identity. He believes the inside of a space is as important as the outside. Influenced by historical interiors of all periods, Yuefeng ZHOU’s interior design studio has been championing Chinese and English country style for the last 2 years, for a roster of A-list famous clients. When he produces a scheme he tends to not leave anything out, even in an initial presentation. For him, it’s about the whole space and every item contributes to the overall feel.

Award Record

Zhecheng Xu and Yuefeng Zhou is a winner of 3 A' Design Awards, including this recognition. The awards were granted in the 2019 - 2020 edition of the A' Design Award & Competition.

About the A' Safety Clothing and Personal Protective Equipment Design Award

The A' Protective Equipment Design Award is an international design competition recognizing good protective equipment by leading designers and brands worldwide. It is organized within the A' Design Award & Competition and is open to protective equipment designers, safety clothing manufacturers, personal protective equipment brands and industrial designers from all countries. Typical entries include helmets, gloves, goggles, respirators, earplugs and safety boots. The awarded protective equipment designs are published at https://dezigners.org/design-category/protective-equipment

About A' Design Award & Competition

Organized annually since 2008, A' Design Award & Competition is an international, juried design accolade. The competition is open to entries from all countries. The philanthropic mission of the A' Design Award is to advance society through good design, by recognizing and promoting superior products, projects and services that benefit society, and by creating a global awareness and appreciation for good design practices and principles. Nominations are peer reviewed and evaluated anonymously by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members against predetermined criteria such as functionality, ergonomics, engineering, presentation, innovation, usability, sustainability and technology, with score normalization applied to remove biases. Awards are conferred at Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Iron levels. Eligible laureates receive the A' Design Prize, which includes the award trophy, the certificate of design excellence, the hardcover yearbook, a lifetime license to use the A' Design Award winner logo, exhibition of awarded works, an invitation to the gala night and award ceremony in Italy, inclusion in the World Design Rankings and Designer Rankings, and public relations and publicity services. Registration, uploading a work and receiving a preliminary score are free of charge, and Professional and Digital Edition laureates are not contractually obliged to pay further fees to claim the A' Design Prize. Design Details

Unique Properties
With a combination of parametric technique and bionics, the bicycle helmet has an excellent external mechanical system. It's different from traditional flake protection structure in its unabridged bionic 3D mechanical system. When hit by an external force, this structure shows better stability. The helmet's porous characteristic makes it possible to achieve a perfect balance of safety and lightness. And the helmet can get better air permeability and organic cool appearance.
Inspiration
The helmet is inspired by 3D Voronoi structure which is widely distributed in Nature, for example, the structure of the animal's bone, turtle shell, and even straw, etc. The structure is a natural consequence of natural evolution, which gives the organism perfect physical performance in aspects of lightness, stability and energy interaction. Thus, we apply this parametric technique into the improvement of helmet design. At the balance of lightness and safety, we hope to provide people with more comfortable, more fashionable, and safer personal protection bicycle helmet.
Research
With the parametric technique, we take mechanical simulation experiments of inner structure sampling points. Based on the simulation date, structure sampling points are rearranged properly, and the helmet finally gets an integrated structure system. Considering the convenience of parametric technique, we can directly control the density parameter of the whole structure system, and specification parameter of the supporting system. After mechanical simulation experiments of the latest structure, the result of simulation affects controls parameter, which promotes the helmet's adaptation to different users and usage scenarios.
Challenge
It's a key of appearance design to make the structure system adapt to cavity form. In the research process, we have to arrange data interaction mechanism between different algorithm units. Iteration and feedback of data lead to the rationality of final simulation results,
Realization and Technology
Main Material: Shell is constructed from carbon kevlar and fiberglass resin with a polystyrene lining.
Operation and Interaction
The helmet structure is the important design elements in this design. The helmet's porous characteristic makes it possible to achieve a perfect balance of safety and lightness. And the helmet can get better air permeability and organic cool appearance.
Project Duration and Location
The project started in June 2018 in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China and would be available for mass consumption in July 2020 in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China.
Specifications
The helmet is still in the experimental test stage. It comes in 3 sizes. Shell is constructed from carbon kevlar and fiberglass resin with a polystyrene lining.
