More About Celina Portable Speaker
Kaïn's design of Celina came out of a problem he had encountered, portable speakers were either too outspoken or they had no identity at all. This is why Celina focuses on making a statement where it is placed down. It expresses luxury through the use of the materials. It expresses functionality by exposing and illuminating the 360° bass output. And it expresses unity because of the ring that molds around the upper part and flows down the center gap under the speaker.
About Kain Kerkhove
Exploring different fields with a variety of products and materials can lead to designs that go further than the standard. Blending together natural and man-made materials in combination with rounded corners and soft edges, create an interesting emotion. These features are often represented in Kaïn’s design work.
Award Record

Design Details
- Unique Properties
- Place it anywhere and let it blend in and stand out. The combination of woven wool and textured aluminium generate a visually stunning look and a feel of luxury. The slit functions as a 360 degree bass output and plays with the light making an appearance that the top cover is floating. A ring molds around the upper part and flows down from the center gap to the underside of the speaker creating a feeling of entirety.
- Inspiration
- The speaker is designed in my personal style which consists of blending together natural and man made materials. This in combination with rounded corners and soft edges to create an interesting emotion. Light is also a big factor that was taken in account, this to create a soft/fading feeling that compliments the fabric.
- Research
- The research of this speaker was very different than the ones of my other products as this had to be fully in line with my personal style. The startup consisted of finding out what fits my identity and associates with my interests. First off by determining what materials fit my style and vision, then by experimenting with shapes that reflect light in a certain way and surfaces that express a certain mood.
- Challenge
- To make the product in your own style as a junior designer means finding yourself and determining what your values are. It isn't' just the shape that counts. It's the emotion, the statement, the choice of material that makes a style unique and bonding to a designer.
- Realization and Technology
- ABS plastic is used to hold the internals and fabric together with clips that make the assembly easy and short. This shell will be manufactured with injection molding techniques. The ring that wraps around the speaker is made of stamped sheet metal. The upper part is made of milled aluminium and then finished off with a textured powder coat.
- Operation and Interaction
- Press the power to turn the speaker on or off. Holding this button will prepare the speaker to pair with a new device. Press Volume up or down to adjust the speakers volume. Press Forward or Backward to cycle through songs. Plugging in an Aux will change the speakers mode from Bluetooth to Aux. Removing the Aux will change the mode back to Bluetooth. The battery status and charging level is indicated by the leds on the back.
