Aero Bookcase is a freestanding bookcase inspired by the airplanes of the 1920s. The legs and the main structure follow curved lines that recall early aviation and the organic style of that period. The frame is made of solid Tzalam wood, and the shelves combine laminated natural oak with colored laminated glass. The inverted curved wooden shelves keep books close to one another. The glass shelves hold books or ornaments, and the tinted glass reflects colored light into the room. The surfaces are finished with six layers of polyurethane.

About Gerardo Ríos

Gerardo Ríos's artistry and craftsmanship is a symbiotic reflection of what he believes in and often finds inspiration on “the daring romance and adventures that we find in people, history and our natural environment”. Ríos’ artistic spirit is inherited from a lineage of artists dating back to his great-great grandfather, the world-renowned painter José MarÍa Velasco. Each piece of furniture, whether it is a chair, a divan, or a chaise lounge, should create a sense of harmony and provoke a sensual response with the person who experiences it. For Gerardo Ríos, It is the need to communicate and the possibility of astonishment that defines the word “Design”.

Design Details

Unique Properties
The shape of the legs and the main structure try to emulate the airplanes by helix of those early years and suggest in an exquisite style the organic ART NOVEAU of that period with three shelves of laminated colored glass that gives a touch of distinction and uniqueness to the whole piece, giving different tones of light on the reflected areas.
Inspiration
The lines of the aero bookcase, arise from the need to communicate the adventurer spirit to innovate at the beginning of the last century, represented by the wooden planes with special textiles and fabrics that flew through the sky during those years. It is not only a unique stylish accent furniture, but also a piece that inspires and invites to dare and achieve.
Research
An investigation was realized about the structure and form of the airplanes from 1920 to 1930, from which came the original shapes of the design. The creative research challenge was the toughest part of this design activity.
Challenge
The most difficult part of this furniture was designing the most appropriate joint between legs, both for industrial production, as the esthetic of the piece: The main challenge was to give a continuous form to the elliptical shelves in a gradual but artistic interpretation using different layers.
Realization and Technology
Built with sharp cuts with high technology machinery in solid Tzalam wood on the legs, and shelves laminated with natural oak wood (fusionated with heat) and colored laminated glass in different colors to choose. Stained with six layers of polyurethane and laminated glass with various optional colors.
Operation and Interaction
The form of the inverted curved shelves make the books stay tight to one another, in the case of the wooden shelves. The crystal shelves can be used either for books or decorative ornaments and thus, take advantage of the reflected light through the tinted glass, that can be customized in different colors, giving a unique personality to the room itself.
Project Duration and Location
The design process begun in September 2016 at the factory of G.RIOS at Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, it was finished on December 2016.
