About the A' Robotics, Automaton and Automation Design Award
The A' Robotics Design Award is an international robotics design competition recognizing good robotics designs by robotics designers and engineers worldwide. It is organized within the A' Design Award & Competition and is open to robotics designers, automation engineers, robotics brands and robot manufacturers from all countries. Typical entries include industrial robots, medical robots, agricultural robots, domestic robots, autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots. The awarded robotics designs are published at https://dezigners.org/design-category/robotics
About A' Design Award & Competition
Organized annually since 2008, A' Design Award & Competition is an international, juried design accolade. The competition is open to entries from all countries. The philanthropic mission of the A' Design Award is to advance society through good design, by recognizing and promoting superior products, projects and services that benefit society, and by creating a global awareness and appreciation for good design practices and principles. Nominations are peer reviewed and evaluated anonymously by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members against predetermined criteria such as functionality, ergonomics, engineering, presentation, innovation, usability, sustainability and technology, with score normalization applied to remove biases. Awards are conferred at Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Iron levels. Eligible laureates receive the A' Design Prize, which includes the award trophy, the certificate of design excellence, the hardcover yearbook, a lifetime license to use the A' Design Award winner logo, exhibition of awarded works, an invitation to the gala night and award ceremony in Italy, inclusion in the World Design Rankings and Designer Rankings, and public relations and publicity services. Registration, uploading a work and receiving a preliminary score are free of charge, and Professional and Digital Edition laureates are not contractually obliged to pay further fees to claim the A' Design Prize. Design Details
- Unique Properties
- The Lawn Mower L AWD Series is a wire-free robotic lawn mower for complex residential terrain. Combining 4WD mobility, intelligent energy management, LiDAR mapping, and 1080p vision, it overcomes the short runtime, weak slope capability, and complex installation of conventional mowers. Its adaptive power system adjusts motor output to terrain resistance in real time, enabling up to 8 hours of runtime, 70 percent slope climbing, and boundary-wire-free autonomous mowing.
- Inspiration
- Rooted in the paradox that robotic mowers promise autonomy yet still depend on boundary wires, limited runtime, and supervision, the project redefines mowing as an adaptive system. By integrating mobility, energy, and navigation as interdependent layers, it adjusts power to terrain and workload, maintains stability on uneven slopes, and uses spatial mapping with visual perception to remove physical boundaries. The result is a self-sufficient, context-aware platform for home landscapes.
- Research
- We conducted user research globally to understand yard maintenance barriers. Testing with fifty households and landscaping experts revealed that current mowers get stuck on slopes and damage turf during turns. Users demanded a system that requires absolutely zero manual rescue. This insight drove our 4WD and zero-radius steering design. By easily conquering seventy-percent slopes and running for eight hours, it makes professional-grade lawn care accessible to anyone without management effort.
- Challenge
- The greatest challenge was reconciling high-performance 4WD climbing with eight-hour runtime in a compact battery-powered mower. Achieving this required over a year of prototyping to balance torque, battery weight, and energy efficiency. Integrating 360-degree LiDAR and a 1080p camera into an IPX6 body without enlarging the product added complexity. The design also had to handle irregular European gardens without wires or RTK, relying solely on onboard sensors for precise guidance.
- Realization and Technology
- The Lawn Mower L AWD 80 is built on an IPX6-rated polymer body housing a 21Ah lithium-ion battery with intelligent power management for up to 8 hours of runtime. A 135W brushless motor at 3000 rpm handles high-density grass. Environmental perception combines 360-degree LiDAR with a 1080p camera for centimeter-level navigation, eliminating boundary wires and RTK dependency. The full 4WD chassis with a dedicated front steering motor enables zero-radius turns and handles slopes up to 70% grade. Modular blade assemblies and tool-free access points ensure field serviceability.
- Operation and Interaction
- The experience begins by removing setup burdens. Without wires, signals, or ongoing dependencies, the system is defined through a single gesture: walking the boundary once, allowing the environment to be understood intuitively. Control is then relinquished as the mower operates as a self-sufficient presence, perceiving, navigating, and adapting without interruption. It completes large areas in one cycle, returns on its own, and turns lawn care from active management into quiet autonomy.
- Project Duration and Location
- The project began in January 2024 in Shenzhen, China, and the final production model was completed in December 2025. Business-to-business sales and independent website sales commence in April 2026. Retail availability on Amazon United States begins in April 2026. Amazon France launches in mid-May 2026, followed by Amazon Germany in mid-June 2026, to capture the summer season.
