More About Vessel of Time Residential
Vessel of Time is a residential interior design created for a pianist and a family of three. The home covers about 231 square meters in Taiwan. A wood-lined foyer forms a gentle threshold between the city and the interior. Tall fluted glass doors and sheer curtains filter daylight into the living space. The piano stands within a shared central core, where music, reading and conversation meet. Light timber, mineral textures and special paint with brush marks shape a calm, low-saturation setting. The open plan links the living areas and supports a slower pace of daily life.
About Wu Pei-Hsuan and Hsieh Tsung-Hsuan
Yuejing: The Essence of Space, as Complex and Pure as Nature Returning to the essence of architectural space, we seek to explore the dynamic and unfinished states of architecture and environmental design, as well as the relationships between people, space, and the environment. In this ever-evolving complexity, we strive to find a balance between purity and the fundamental nature of place. Our primary design approach focuses on architecture, space, environment, perception, interaction, and usage—examining the connections between different interfaces to evoke human awareness of the environment. By observing and reflecting on everyday life, we explore new possibilities within the environment.

Design Details
- Unique Properties
- This project takes time and sound as its spatial genesis, that employs simple materials and the shifting interplay of light and shadow to cultivate a sense of tranquility throughout the space. As time passes, it brings a gentler understanding and deeper appreciation of life. The intention is to create a home that is warm, profound, and elegant—one that encourages a slower, more reflective pace of living. The spatial narrative unfolds through openness, release, and serenity. Under soft, diffused light, the interior immerses itself in gradual transitions, portraying a quiet theater of life where reality and romance subtly intertwine.
- Inspiration
- The aim is for home to be a source of tranquility, providing a refuge from the relentless pace of urban life. The design advocates for an open-plan layout where living areas are interconnected, promoting harmony between spaces and encouraging a sense of freedom and flow within the family. This makes it an ideal place for a modern lifestyle.
- Research
- Upon returning home, one enters a wood-wrapped foyer where the city’s noise gently fades. At the center of the living room, the piano is integrated rather than isolated, its music blending with reading, conversation, and shared meals. Light moves softly across timber surfaces from morning to evening, filtered through sheer curtains that create a calm, breathable atmosphere. Circulation becomes part of daily life instead of a corridor, allowing pauses between music and books. An once-empty bookshelf gradually fills, marking the family’s growth.
- Challenge
- Real company is not doing the same thing in the same space, but rather, for this family of three, it means setting up the context through which each can fulfill their own private and shared needs in different corners. Re-spacing is the game-changing idea, as it is all about having fun, creating a new lifestyle for the family to build familial relationships anew.
- Realization and Technology
- The design incorporates special paint with brush marks to complement the layers of wood tones, balancing the intensity of the space with structure and color. In this low-saturation ambiance, the colors of life become richer and more vivid, allowing for the delicate appreciation of every moving moment. As time changes, the warmth of light and shadow deepens, and the space immerses in the gradual transitions under soft light, portraying a life theater where reality and romance blend.
- Operation and Interaction
- Designed for a pianist and a family of three, this home is defined by light-toned timber and a quiet architectural language. A wood-lined foyer forms a gentle threshold from city to interior, leading to tall fluted glass doors that softly filter daylight into the living space. The music and living areas share a central core where piano, conversation, and daily rituals converge. Expansive windows and sheer curtains shape the atmosphere through shifting light, while subtle ceiling shifts and axial walls guide the transition from public to private. Rooted in a Wabi-Sabi sensibility, the design embraces simplicity, light, and the passage of time.
