More About Waltz of Light Residence
Waltz of Light is an interior design for a 96 square meter apartment in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, planned for a family of four. Curved forms flow from the ceiling to the walls and floors. A metallic ceiling arc in the living room forms the main focal point, set against milky brown, light gray and dark wood tones. A continuous light band links the foyer, dining area and semi-open study. Stone-pattern surfaces, spray-paint finishes and mirrored textures guide the light along the curves. Lighting, air conditioning and curtain tracks are concealed within the curved forms to save ceiling height.

Design Details
- Unique Properties
- Upon entry, the arc-shaped ceiling commands attention, with metallic tones spotlighting it against milky brown, gray, and deep wood hues. Arcs dissolve into walls and floors, creating fluidity, while light and shadow animate the curves, hence 'Waltz of Flowing Light.' The stone TV wall with indirect lighting echoes this rhythm. A continuous light band links dining and study areas, guiding movement. Arched cabinetry, corners, and door panels unify the social space, giving it a seamless, theatrical quality.
- Inspiration
- The 96 m2 apartment in Kaohsiung's Gushan District, designed for a family of four, centers on a bold social-area focal point. Curves and arcs shape flowing spatial forms across ceilings, walls, and floors, creating dynamic movement. Modern foundations are enhanced with glossy materials and light tones, producing a stage-like atmosphere. The continuity of design unites the home's elements, resulting in a dwelling that is both elegant and expressive, balancing visual drama with daily livability.
- Research
- In Kaohsiung's Gushan District, this 96 m2 apartment for a family of four features arcs flowing from the ceiling to the walls and floors, creating rhythmic continuity. The metallic living room ceiling arc anchors the space like a spotlight, contrasting milky brown, gray, and dark wood. The open social area links the foyer, dining, and study, with a continuous light band as the spatial axis. Stone TV wall, arched doors, and cabinetry soften transitions. Private zones use color to express personality. Homeowners praised its hotel-like quality.
- Challenge
- A key challenge lay in integrating smart-home systems with the building's original conditions. Limited ceiling height had to accommodate lighting, air conditioning, and curtain tracks. The designer cleverly concealed these within curved forms and light bands to prevent the ceiling from appearing compressed. In the study, low beams were skillfully resolved with spanning light strips that ensured both brightness and a unified look. This required precise construction coordination, ultimately achieving a balance between function and aesthetics.
- Realization and Technology
- The space's primary palette consists of milky brown, light gray, and coffee hues, exuding warmth and softness. Rose-gold and metallic accents punctuate the scheme, resonating with the dark central metal ceiling feature to create a balanced visual rhythm. Large surfaces of stone-pattern laminates and coatings are paired with spray-paint finishes and mirrored textures, enriching the play of light along curved transitions. The flooring is laid diagonally, breaking away from rigid grids and adding further depth and flow to the ambiance.
- Operation and Interaction
- Upon completion, the homeowners remarked that the space feels as refined as a hotel suite. The signature arc-shaped ceiling and metallic centerpiece in the living room became a memorable hallmark that impressed every visitor. The children enjoy creating and playing in their own rooms, while the couple often spends time in the open living and dining areas, savoring the layered interplay of light and shadow. Feedback consistently affirmed that the design met their original expectations, successfully delivering a residence with a distinct character.
- Project Duration and Location
- The project finished in June 2025 in Taiwan.
- Specifications
- The 96 square meters new apartment is planned with 3 plus 1 rooms. The most notable adjustment is in the master bedroom, where the walk-in closet was expanded outward to provide both display and storage functionality. In the social area, the living room serves as the core, linking the dining space, foyer, and study. Enclosed partitions were removed to preserve openness. The semi-open study features a daybed, maintaining visual transparency while also functioning as a restful corner. Overall, arcs and light bands connect the layout, ensuring a cohesive stage-like identity.
