Regarding White Box House
White Box is a private residence built on a narrow site measuring four meters wide and twenty meters deep. The interior is modeled after a small museum and has an inorganic yet elegant character. Privacy is protected by reducing the number of windows, while a skylight above the stairway hall brings natural light into the family library, the living area and the ground floor. All walls are painted white, so light is diffused even through small gaps. Indirect line lighting on the walls and ceiling adds depth, and doors that reach the ceiling make the long space appear larger.

Design Details
- Unique Properties
- This is a private residence planned on a narrow site with a width of 4m and a depth of 20m. An important aspect of this building plan was to bring in plenty of light into the interior spaces while ensuring privacy. Although it is a private residence, the space is modeled after a small museum, making effective use of the long land, creating an inorganic yet elegant space. This building uses ideas and design to create a more attractive residential space on an unfavorable site.
- Inspiration
- For the client, who prefers inorganic spaces, it was important that the building not look like a wooden building. Privacy is ensured by minimizing the number of windows, and skylights ensure brightness inside. Indirect line lighting on the walls and ceiling creates a sense of depth. By painting all the walls white, light is diffused even in small gaps, ensuring brightness in the room.
- Research
- Unsold land because the frontage is narrow and the land is long. Because designing a normal house is difficult. A traditional Japanese tenement house has been completed. It's full of ideas for making your physical space look larger.
- Challenge
- We had a hard time securing lighting that met Japanese building standards. The living room is brightly lit by a skylight above the stairs. The inside of the store is long and narrow, but the overall color is white. The high doors that extend all the way to the ceiling successfully make the space appear larger. Line lighting placed on the ceiling amplifies this effect.
- Realization and Technology
- A skylight was installed on the ceiling of the stairway hall, creating a bright space in the family library on the second floor. Natural light from the skylight enters the LDK and guides the light to the first floor. Produces soft light and creates a bright space even with a small opening.
