Design Details
- Unique Properties
- Lens Furniture Series divide light and shadow by two complementary colored acrylics in a light, simple and inclusive way. The thickness and angle of the same material are designed to the extent that the visual effect of light and shadow generated from the lens is reproduced. This series which comprise inlaid acrylic and metal makes furniture combination flexible and delivers artistic pleasure to home life.
- Inspiration
- Primarily inspired by convex lens, Lens Series are designed on the underlying concept of imperceptible beauty in life. This concept is expected to be a part of our design. Full-bodied forms and metallic materials are used to make furniture reflect with the things around, as if furniture sets were lens. This furniture set is expected to inspire and draw the attention of people around to life, art design, and the imperceptible beauty of life.
- Research
- Type of Study: design Aim of Study: art furniture Method: production and fabrication Research tools: design software, furniture production equipment Experimental results/insights/impact: ergonomic fit, aligned with the daily use needs of furniture Impact on real-life phenomenon: making art a part of our life, stressing usefulness and artistic aesthetics, pursuing innovation of free combination, and realizing art interaction in home life.
- Challenge
- How to make a trade-off in respect of art aesthetics and structural stability of the furniture is considered the biggest challenge in the design process. In the early phase of design, we chose to use tinted metal and colored PMMA glass. However, we came to realize that structural stability and comfort are crucial for furniture products, and the special material nature also challenges how we present the best art furniture.
- Realization and Technology
- The metal parts of the Lens Series are made of 304 metal forged fingerprint-resistant metal, and the curved surface of the metal parts need to be polished by hand, in order to fulfill the aesthetic aspect of the curvature and to keep the structure steady in use. PMMA materials are subject to the gradient color PMMA spraying process. Metal parts are inlaid to the glass profile with joints beveled, which not only avoid an excess use of adhesives and enhances eco-friendly property, but also keep the combination furniture firm and steady.
- Operation and Interaction
- With respect to the transition of light and shadow, frosted acrylic and transparent finishes are blended, to the extent that color gradients would be subject to optical transition according to the incident light. The shadowing effect of various colors is created. This series can be used alone or in set that fits to modern home.
- Project Duration and Location
- The project commenced in Shanghai in January 2021 and the final deliverable was completed in Shanghai in November 2021. On 11 November 2021, Lens Series were exhibited at the West Bund Art & Design on 11 November 2021. On 27 February 2023, Lens Series were exhibited at the Design Shenzhen Fair.
