FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
COMO, Italy, April 28, 2022 /DesignNewswire/ A' Design Award & Competition has confirmed the Bronze A' Design Award in the Energy Products, Projects and Devices Design category for Fennec Turbine by Maxim Kuzin, designed for Max Kuzin Machinery. The award was conferred within the 2021 - 2022 A' Design Award & Competition and was determined through blind peer review by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members, who evaluated anonymized entries against predetermined criteria.
About the Bronze A' Design Award
The Bronze A' Design Award is given to outstanding designs that showcase a high degree of creativity and practicality. It recognizes the dedication and skill of designers who produce work that stands out for its thoughtful development and innovative use of materials and technology. These designs are acknowledged for their professional execution and potential to influence industry standards positively. Winning this award highlights the designer's ability to blend form and function effectively, offering solutions that enhance people's lives and wellbeing.
About Fennec Turbine
Fennec is a compact vertical wind turbine designed for use in city areas and on rooftops. The turbine uses a hyperboloidal rotor that works at 60 rpm, with a maximum blade speed below 26 kilometres per hour. The low speed reduces noise, vibration and kinetic risk. The larger size works as an autonomous generator that supplies other devices. The smaller size works as an autonomous ambient light source, and a mobile application changes its colour. The parts are made by waterjet cutting of aluminium, gluing and steel milling.
About Maxim Kuzin
Maxim Kuzin (16 January 1988), holds a degree of engineer at specialty CAD systems from aerospace faculty of Moscow State Aviation Institute (MAI) since 2012. Mainly focused on projects striving to make human life more comfortable and affordable, rising the living standards of citizens.
Award Record
With this recognition, Maxim Kuzin is a winner of 1 A' Design Award.
About the A' Energy Products, Projects and Devices Design Award
The A' Energy Design Award is an international competition recognizing good energy products, projects and services by leading designers and brands worldwide. The competition is organized within the A' Design Award & Competition and is open to energy product designers, energy device engineers, industrial design studios and energy systems architects from all countries. Entries typically include solar panels, wind turbines, hydroelectric generators, geothermal systems, bioenergy converters and fuel cells. Awarded energy product designs are published at https://dezigners.org/design-category/energy
About A' Design Award & Competition
A' Design Award & Competition is an international, juried design accolade organized annually since 2008. The competition is open to entries from all countries. The A' Design Award has a philanthropic mission to advance society through good design by recognizing and promoting superior products, projects and services that benefit society, and by creating a global awareness and appreciation for good design practices and principles. Entries are peer reviewed and anonymously evaluated by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members against predetermined criteria such as functionality, ergonomics, engineering, presentation, innovation, usability, sustainability and technology, with score normalization applied to remove biases. Awards are conferred at Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Iron levels. The A' Design Prize granted to eligible laureates includes the award trophy, the certificate of design excellence, the hardcover yearbook, a lifetime license to use the A' Design Award winner logo, exhibition of awarded works, an invitation to the gala night and award ceremony in Italy, inclusion in the World Design Rankings and Designer Rankings, and public relations and publicity services. Registration, the upload of a work and the preliminary score are free of charge, and Professional and Digital Edition laureates are not contractually obliged to pay further fees to claim the A' Design Prize. Design Details
- Unique Properties
- The Fennec Turbine is a compact vertical wind turbine with low noise, high safety and long use. The heart of the technology is a unique hyperboloidal rotor working at 60 rpm and maximum linear velocity of blades lesser than 26 km/h. It means the lowest noise, vibrations and kinetic threat and enables to use it in the city area and on the rooftops.
- Inspiration
- Almost weightless hyperboloid shells of famous Russian engineer Vladimir Shukhov (1853 - 1939) are magnificent even being a static towers. If you make them spin they will turn to a magical kinetic sculptures. I was passionate about to make a perfect fusion of art, machinery and arcitecture. The wind moving the branches of the trees, as if giving them the opportunity to talk. I wanted to breathe life into this sculpture, make it a full-fledged part of the surrounding world.
- Research
- Having set the goal of creating a rotor that is safe for use in a populated environment, theoretical calculations were carried out that determine the main geometric parameters of the design, which allows a vertical rotor of small diameter to operate efficiently at very low speeds. Physical layouts and prototypes confirmed the necessary accuracy of the theoretical calculation model, which made it possible to design a working functional prototype. FENNEK's design is entirely dictated by CAE simulation, which determines the optimal proportions and precise turbines and geometry of its main parts.
- Challenge
- The low rotational speed and efficiency of a vertical wind turbine are inversely proportional characteristics. It was necessary to find a fundamentally new shape of the rotor and study it in detail in order to establish the relationship of geometric parameters and optimize the design.
- Realization and Technology
- Waterjet cutting of aluminum sheets and pipes, gluing, steel CNC milling.
- Operation and Interaction
- The S-size turbine is used as autonomous energy generator to supply other devices. The XS-size turbine works as an autonomous ambient light sourse, more as an kinetic art object pleasant to view and to interact with. An app in a smartphone allows to changing the color or make it follow the music or othe data stream.
- Project Duration and Location
- The project started in 2016 in Moscow, the first prototypes were exhibited in Moscow, Baku. In 2018, the project was awarded the STARTS Prize Honorary Mention. In 2020, he was supported by the educational and mentoring program STARTS in Motion. The first series of products based on the technology is currently being developed.
