What would emotions look like in the visual world? This series of posters named Emotions represent four different types of basic emotions in visual form. The four emotions are Joy, Anger, Sadness, and Fear. The designer used contemporary visual language including abstract illustrations, vibrant colors, and dynamic typography to show the connection between emotions and facial expressions. In this design system, each visual language works as individual designs on its own. At the same time, all the poster designs work as a system.
About Rui Ma
Rui Ma is an award-winning designer, art director, and illustrator based in Los Angeles. With an MFA degree in Graphic Design and over ten years of professional work experience, she focuses on graphic design, art direction, branding, illustration, digital design, print design, experiential design, etc. She also has a passion for photography and fashion. Her work incorporates bold, dynamic typography and illustration, along with energetic colors. Rui started her career in New York City and decided to move to Los Angeles afterwards, she gained years of design experience in both cities.

- Emotions is a series of posters that represent four different types of basic emotions - Joy, Anger, Sadness, and Fear. The posters also show the connection between emotions and facial expressions in visual form. The design was created in its own grid with abstract illustrations, vibrant colors, and dynamic typography. At the same time, each graphic, illustration, and typography also work as individual designs on its own.
- Inspiration
- I was reading a few psychology books recently and a question came to my mind: What would emotions look like in the visual world? So I did the research and created the posters with graphics and illustrations in English and Chinese.
- Research
- The research of this project was based on information about the subject from the internet.
- Challenge
- Emotions can be abstract and also representational at the same time. The challenge of the project was how to visualize emotions in playful and contemporary design/illustration styles. The research on the connection between facial expressions and emotions was also a challenge but an interesting subject.

- The posters were created and designed with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

- This series of posters were designed for both digital and print applications. The posters can be viewed on screens, prints and OOH, etc.
