Regarding Athletic Illustration
Athletic is a series of sports-themed illustrations created with digital painting software. Each image reduces a complex athletic movement to simple lines and shapes. The most representative pose of each sport was selected after a wide study of reference images. Custom brushes and textures were developed to recall the surface of traditional painting on paper. Each original artwork measures 1920 by 1920 pixels at 72 dpi. The series aims to show the beauty and the energy held within a single moment of motion.
About Hao Li
Hao Li's love for painting came from the influence of his grandmother who also loves painting. The various excellent animated movies he saw while growing up also made the idea of making his own animation stronger and stronger. After trying to produce several personal animated shorts, he believes he has a mature level of animation. So, how to use animation to influence more people and make things better became his next goal. This goal was finally achieved when he contacted UNICEF and finally completed this short animation. By making more people aware of issues they hadn't been aware of before, Hao believes the world will become a better place.

Design Details
- Unique Properties
- This is a series of illustrations, in the work I have tried to present the texture of traditional painting by using digital tech. At the same time, generalize the complex form of motion into simple lines and shapes is another thought of mine, in this way I can show how dynamic and beautiful the motion of sports is.
- Inspiration
- I did an animation about badminton a few years ago, and since then I have been fascinated by the expression of sports-related topics. In this series, I focused more on capturing the beauty of the moment than showing the whole process of sports, and I found that each sport has its own standard movements, and they present a unique form that is easily recognizable and has a strong sense of beauty. So I decided to create this series of illustrations.
- Research
- In order to better complete this series, I did a lot of searching for each relevant movement and summarized the most representative movements from a large number of picture materials. After completing this step of selection, the next step is to simplify the complex body language and retain the most critical information. Therefore, while taking into account both the form and aesthetics, every line and every piece of the figure presented in the picture has its own necessity
- Challenge
- The key to this series is to accurately grasp the most unique characteristics of each movement and present it through the simplest graphics and lines. In the process of collecting information, I noticed that each sport contains a large number of body movements, how to find the most representative and at the same time aesthetic movements in so many movements is the biggest challenge I faced.
- Realization and Technology
- This is an illustration series made completely by computer painting software, Adobe Photoshop. Inspired by traditional painting on paper, I tried to restore the sense of the material in traditional painting with software, through many attempts, I finally created the most suitable brushes and textures.
- Operation and Interaction
- This is a sports-themed illustration that tries to convey to the viewer the unique beauty of each sport.
- Project Duration and Location
- The project is made in 2019 and featured in Behance Illustration in January 2021.
- Specifications
- The original painting size is 1920X1920 pixels, 72 dpi by each.
