Regarding Kodama Bar Stool Seating
Kodama Bar Stool is a wooden seat designed for use at counters and bars. The design follows a Japandi approach with a grounded and organic look. Contrasting walnut and applewood highlight the original wood joinery, which stays visible. Traditional woodworking knowledge is combined with a CNC router, allowing joinery of greater complexity and precision. The stool measures 45 cm in width, 54 cm in depth and 66 cm in height. The name Kodama means spirit of the tree, and the design pays tribute to wood as a renewable material.
About Marshall Wollum
Trying to manifest a future of furniture design that is sustainable and renewable and grateful of the materials (wood) and the conscious beings that gifted us the wood (The Trees). Documenting the creative journey by creating art in the form of videos on YouTube to possibly spark the remembrance of unity that lies within the viewers core. But these are just boilerplate words, in truth and in alignment with my purpose for being, I don't know where I'm headed and it doesn't matter because I'm just thankful to be on this path doing what I love.

Design Details
- Unique Properties
- A subtle Japandi design with a grounded and organic aesthetic. The contrasting Walnut and Applewood highlight the stool's creative and original wood joinery. The Kodama Bar Stool is a blend of ancient techniques with modern technology to create a piece that will hopefully endure for generations, in both construction and design aesthetic.
- Inspiration
- The word Kodama translates to the "spirit of the tree". The intent behind the Kodama Bar Stool is to pay tribute to wood, one of our world's most renewable materials, and to honor the tree that granted us its life's work. The goal of this project was to combine the knowledge of traditional woodworking with a CNC router to accomplish joinery that was previously unobtainable in complexity and precision.
- Challenge
- This is a new field of manufacturing with little education opportunities available so I'm self-taught and continually making everything up as I go. I wake up every day feeling like the luckiest guy in the world to be on this creative adventure.
- Realization and Technology
- The challenge of this project was devising a method to program the powerful CNC router to delicately manifest the design through complex coding of the toolpaths and precision workholdings of the components on the machine. This innovative process has many more exciting years of refinement ahead as we are just beginning to open the door to a new era of parametric design and manufacturing that will allow human creativity to flourish with these new capabilities.
- Operation and Interaction
- Visible and honest wood joinery designed to hopefully endure through generations of daily use.
- Project Duration and Location
- The project started in 2016 in the mountains of Colorado and was finished in Southern California in March 2019.
