FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
COMO, Italy, April 23, 2020 /DesignNewswire/ A' Design Award & Competition has confirmed the Silver A' Design Award in the Building Materials and Construction Components Design category for Solarbreaker Photovoltaic Facade Shutter by Jaroslaw Markowicz, designed for Phoenix Enterprise. The award was conferred within the 2019 - 2020 A' Design Award & Competition and was reached through blind peer review by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members, who scored anonymized entries against predetermined criteria.
What the Silver A' Design Award Means
The Silver A' Design Award celebrates top-tier designs that embody excellence and innovation. This award acknowledges creations that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, reflecting the designer's deep understanding and skill. Silver A' Design Award recipients are recognized for their contribution to raising industry standards and advancing the practice of design. Their work often incorporates original innovations and elicits a strong emotional response, making a notable impact on the improvement of everyday life.
More About Solarbreaker Photovoltaic Facade Shutter
Solarbreaker is a photovoltaic facade shutter that turns building surfaces into energy producing elements. The system is based on extruded aluminium profiles onto which solar panels are mounted. Each panel is tilted at forty five degrees for higher efficiency, and one module of one square metre can power sixteen LED bulbs. Assembly requires almost no tools, because the profiles are placed on the mounting and lock under their own weight. Cables are hidden inside the profiles. Besides facades, the same components can form fences, barriers and blinds.
Award Record
This recognition makes Jaroslaw Markowicz a winner of 2 A' Design Awards. All of the awards belong to the 2019 - 2020 edition of the A' Design Award & Competition.
About the A' Building Materials and Construction Components Design Award
The A' Building Components Design Award is an international design competition recognizing good building components by best brands and designers worldwide. The competition is organized within the A' Design Award & Competition and is open to building material manufacturers, building material brands, construction product designers and industrial designers from all countries. Entries typically include bricks, beams, windows, doors, insulation materials and roofing materials. Awarded building components designs are published at https://dezigners.org/design-category/building-components
About A' Design Award & Competition
A' Design Award & Competition is an international, juried design accolade organized annually since 2008. The competition is open to entries from all countries. The A' Design Award has a philanthropic mission to advance society through good design by recognizing and promoting superior products, projects and services that benefit society, and by creating a global awareness and appreciation for good design practices and principles. Entries are peer reviewed and anonymously evaluated by an international grand jury panel of established academics, design professionals and press members against predetermined criteria such as functionality, ergonomics, engineering, presentation, innovation, usability, sustainability and technology, with score normalization applied to remove biases. Awards are conferred at Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Iron levels. The A' Design Prize granted to eligible laureates includes the award trophy, the certificate of design excellence, the hardcover yearbook, a lifetime license to use the A' Design Award winner logo, exhibition of awarded works, an invitation to the gala night and award ceremony in Italy, inclusion in the World Design Rankings and Designer Rankings, and public relations and publicity services. Registration, the upload of a work and the preliminary score are free of charge, and Professional and Digital Edition laureates are not contractually obliged to pay further fees to claim the A' Design Prize. Design Details
- Unique Properties
- Our solutions make photovoltaics an integral part of the building. Solarbreaker products make possible to use the entire building facade for energy production without disturbing its aesthetics. The system has been developed to give the greatest configuration options in the simplest possible form. The main application of Solarbreaker are building facades, however, using the flexible capabilities of the system we can build barriers, fences, window blinds or free-standing blinds from it.
- Inspiration
- The main inspiration for the product was the sun protection solutions existing on the market. Large glazed facades, unfortunately, make the rooms get very hot, the sun from the south can be a problem, however, we wanted to turn this disadvantage into an advantage. Solarbreaker allows to use almost the entire building for electricity production and at the same time protect it from the sun.
- Research
- The main research was to develop a product which can be adapted to almost any building. This required extensive analysis of the various buildings and their constructions. These studies have resulted in a design that is very easy to assemble. The first tests were made on 3D printed models. The wing loads were tested many times, which allowed the development of aluminium profiles with the required parameters.
- Challenge
- The biggest challenge of the project was to create a product that would retain its lightness despite the internal electronics and photovoltaic panel
- Realization and Technology
- The solarbreaker design is based on extruded profiles. Solar panels are mounted on the main profile. This method of assembly allows to easily separate materials so that the product can be recycled. The solution has been designed to be easy to install. Extruded profiles fold like lego blocks and allow for wide arrangement possibilities.
- Operation and Interaction
- Connecting profiles and building structures requires almost no tools. The structure is built directly on site from components. Finished profiles with photovoltaic panel just need to be put on the mounting and pressed - under the pressure of weight the element will lock. Solarbreaker is equipped with the elements necessary to connect it to the home power grid. Cable connections are hide inside the profiles, therefore the solution is durable and resistant to weather conditions. The 1m2 module will produce enough energy to power sixteen LED bulbs (80wat in total). Each panel is tilted at an angle of 45 degrees, which ensures the highest efficiency.
- Project Duration and Location
- the project was developed in Warsaw. Conceptual work lasted from november 2018. After many prototypes and tests, the project was finally implemented in January 2020.
