About Bionic Photosynthetic Curtain
Bionic Photosynthetic is a curtain wall that performs artificial photosynthesis. The design imitates the roots, stems, veins and leaf tissue of plants. The veins that carry water are 3D printed inside the frame. These channels supply water for photosynthesis and remove the liquid produced afterwards. The frame holds three layers: a tempered glass cover, a middle cell frame and a lower plate. Artificial cells in the middle layer hold chloroplasts inside bio-membranes. Sunlight and carbon dioxide enter the cells, and oxygen is released to the air.
About the A' Design Award
Bionic Photosynthetic Curtain is an Iron A' Design Award winner, a prestigious recognition granted to good designs that meet the professional and industrial requirements expected from well-designed creations. Iron winners demonstrate great skill, high specialization, expert understanding, and creative capacity of their creators. Bionic Photosynthetic Curtain is expected to be a highly regarded, admired, and cherished creation that is practical and innovative. This Iron A' Design Award-winning design integrates industry best practices and has competent technical characteristics linked with know-how and talent. Bionic Photosynthetic Curtain is respected for its thoroughness and is designed to provide quality of life improvements that help make the world a better place.
Press Kit
- Unique Properties
- In this artificial photosynthesis system, the system bionics the roots, stems, veins, and leaf tissue of plants.
In the bionics of the stems and leaves, the design use the function of 3D printing. To print out the veins of the water in the frame of the curtain wall, which includes the water needed before photosynthesis, and post-photosynthesis liquid sending away. There are three layers of tissue in the frame, the upper cover (tempered glass), the cell frame(middle frame), the lower plate. - Dimensions & Packaging
- H 150cm x W 150cm x D 6cm in triangle shape.

- Production Technology
- In SAPS, the system bionic the roots, stems, veins, and leaf of plants by 3D printing, which includes the water needed before photosynthesis, and post-photosynthesis liquid sending away. The liquid waste containing glucose can be supplied with other biological nutrients or as a fuel. There are three layers of tissue in the frame, the tempered glass level, the cell frame, and the artificial cells in the middle. The cell contains package with the bio-membranes to contain chloroplasts and all tissues that need to run photosynthesis, also it transfers solar light and CO2 in and let the O2 release to the nature.
- Design Challenge
- Integration with building and finding the most proper plant to do experiment.
- Research
- The carbon dioxide consumption unit is metrics per square centimeter, and the numerical unit is 7.21. The photosynthesis efficiency of using water, the high dissolved oxygen molecular water efficiency is The best. The efficiency of white spectrum is highest in nighttime spectrum selection. In this 24-hour photosynthesis process. It can absorb nearly a half metric ton of carbon dioxide a day, which is the amount absorbed by one half-hectare broad-leaved forest for one-day photosynthesis. This curtain wall can reduce the carbon footprint of the building. If it is sustainable, they will restore the earth's atmospheric system like a forest.
- Inspiration
- If the idea and S.A.P.S. system integrate the characteristics of plants into the building construction materials, the system will imitate the roots, stems, and leaves; giving water, transporting to the leaves, and operating photosynthesis. Then the buildings with S.A.P.S. will be like the leaves of a tree, day and night to operating photosynthesis, continuously reducing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
- Project Duration
- 2019 from Spring to summer in Taipei, Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- In the bionics of the stems and leaves, the design use the function of 3D printing. The design print the veins of the water in the frame of the curtain wall, which includes the water needed before photosynthesis, and post-photosynthesis liquid sending away. The liquid waste (the design call it energy liquid containing glucose, which can be supplied with other biological nutrients or as a fuel).
