About Awash in Comfort Residential House
Awash in Comfort is a residential interior design for a 280 square meter home in Taoyuan City, Taiwan. The connection to nature is the core theme. The solid wall that once divided the terrace from the living space was removed, blending interior and exterior and offering panoramic views, sunlight and fresh air. An open plan layout links the living room, dining area, kitchen, open study, three bedrooms and two bathrooms. A half height television wall and a driftwood shoe bench define the areas. Italian ceramic slabs, driftwood and eco-friendly building materials are used.

- Unique Properties
- The design transcends any single style, with the connection to nature serving as the core theme throughout the entire abode. By removing the solid wall that once divided the terrace and the living space, the interior and exterior are blended. Thus, the design creates a seamless indoor outdoor flow, offering panoramic views while allowing sunlight and fresh air to flood into the interiors, resulting in a bright and welcoming environment. To provide children with ample room to move and to enhance interaction among family members, an open plan layout connects each functional area. A half height TV wall, a driftwood shoe bench, and subtle shifts in color and material delineate spaces. This approach not only allows sightlines and emotions to flow freely, but also clearly defines different functions.

- Design Challenge
- The public areas feature natural stone with raw textures, restoring the space to its purest form and essence. The abundant natural light that floods in softens the visual weight of the stone, achieving a balance between solidity and transparency. Without a solid wall separating the terrace from the interior space, the terrace can do more than just add living space — it can become a natural extension of the home. At night, low-level lighting ensures safe movement and minimal light pollution. The terrace offers a stunning view of the night sky and twinkling stars. The terrace features a sofa, a long table, and a barbecue grill, forming a versatile space that effortlessly accommodates a variety of activities. It’s perfect for both everyday needs and entertaining guests.
- Research
- The modern residence is anchored by natural materials, seeking a dynamic balance between ruggedness and refinement. In the public areas, a gray palette sets a calm and composed tone. The soft gray stone veining on the flooring, the flowing textures on the walls, and the charcoal wood grains in the study room build a sense of depth. Positioned at the entryway, the driftwood shoe bench becomes a gateway to a hidden sanctuary, gently guiding residents away from the city’s bustle and into a world of calm and tranquility. Situated in a more secluded part of the home, the dining room and kitchen avoid an enclosed feeling by pairing soft white stone with light wood, brightening the overall space and preserving visual breathing room. In the master bedroom, the walls are finished with hand-applied plaster that evokes the texture of sand. The authenticity of raw materials creates a tranquil, cozy retreat.
- Inspiration
- Situated on a higher floor and surrounded by lush mountains, this residence connects people with the profound beauty and vitality of the natural world. The design unfolds around the concept of “coexisting with nature,” expressed through visual images, textures, and the overall composition. The public areas are defined by natural stone in a rugged finish, complemented by wood ranging from solid timber to repurposed driftwood. Their intricate wood grains reveal the traces of time. They transform the space into a living experience one can see, touch, and feel. The home transcends its role as a container, becoming a space where landscape and nature are integral to one’s way of living.
- Project Duration
- The project is finished in November 2024 in Taoyuan City, Taiwan.
- Operation Flow
- The functional layout centers on the theme of “harmonious coexistence between human beings and nature.” To open up the entryway’s view and welcome in light, the TV wall is designed at half height, allowing both light and sightlines to flow freely. When sitting on the sofa, the eye is naturally drawn to the TV wall, a stunning focal point that anchors the foreground, while the bookshelf becomes the background; together, they create a sense of depth that visually elongates the space while maintaining balance and stability within the floor plan. Behind the TV wall lies a transitional zone where natural light is softer, making it ideal for an open study room. This not only provides a cozy environment for reading but also promotes interaction among family members. In the public areas, the mirrored ceiling visually lightens the low beams. Their reflections dissolve the heaviness and create a sense of airiness and transparency. A built-in fireplace adds a touch of warmth and softness to the space, while in winter, it provides heat to the area around the floor-to-ceiling windows.
