About Weightlessness Art Installation
Weightlessness is an immersive video installation that explores the feeling of being lost in the city. The main structure is built from scaffolding, with simulated plants placed in the gaps to recreate a miniature urban landscape. Aerial footage of high-rise residential buildings, recorded by drones, is projected inside to give the audience a sense of falling. The sound combines mechanical noise with a faint heartbeat. Visitors move freely through the internal and external spaces. The installation reflects on the effect of rapid urban development on the environment and people.

- This work uses drones to capture aerial footage of high-rise residential buildings, simulating the feeling of falling for the audience. The main structure of the installation is built using scaffolding, with simulated plants placed in the gaps to recreate the urban landscape. Additionally, the sound played on site is composed of mechanical noise and heartbeat sounds, contributing to a complete presentation of urban elements.
- Design Challenge
- Everyone is experiencing different stories in their respective cities. The biggest challenge is how to make the work resonate with each audience. The reason for selecting high-rise residential buildings as the main visual element of the work is that, as the most important pillar industry in China's rapid development process, it deeply affects everyone and every family. Through representative images and scenes, combined with each audience's own experiences, the audience can have different understandings of the work.
- Research
- The work revolves around the concept of "weightlessness" and creates a complex, participatory spatial experience image installation that integrates various factors such as devices, architecture, images, and theaters. The work "Weightlessness" is a metaphor for modern urban life, ecological environment, and people's feelings and states in real life. The work attempts to explore with the audience ways for humans, cities, and ecology to coexist harmoniously and find new paths for green and sustainable urban development.
- Inspiration
- This work is inspired by "weightlessness". "Weightlessness" is originally a physical concept, and the work wants to express people's inner "weightlessness" in the city, that is, people are "lost" in the city. The works allow the audience to feel a state of "weightlessness" during the visit and reflect on their own situation and confusion in urban life.
- Project Duration
- The project started in December 2022 and finished with installation in Wuhan, China in January 2023
- Operation Flow
- The work is divided into two parts: the internal space and the external space. From the outside of the installation, there is a constantly growing "building" scene. Inside the installation, the audience is enveloped by rising "building" images and simulated "plants," creating a sense of falling. The installation emits a low and hollow mechanical roar, accompanied by the faint heartbeat of humans. This work provides an immersive exhibition experience for the audience through a multi-sensory presentation.
