About Interpreting Discomfort Oil Paint

Interpreting Discomfort is a series of oil paintings about personal space and social pressure. The works show hands and eyes in staged scenes that recreate everyday moments of unease. Caring actions can bring people closer, yet too much attention can also cause discomfort. The paintings combine two techniques. Indirect painting builds a black and white base that is then glazed with color. Direct painting applies mixed color straight onto the surface. The series is made with oil paint on canvas and wood panel, and it is shown in galleries as a starting point for conversation.

Production Technology
She examined the difference between indirect painting and direct painting, and used both of them in the picture. The indirect painting methods belongs to the technique of classic realistic oil painting, which is completed in black and white and then glaze color on top. Direct painting is the method of contemporary painting, which directly superimposes the adjusted color on the canvas.
Materials used: Oil paint, Wood Panel, Canvas
Design Challenge
Ideation and the atmosphere is the hardest part of this project. In the presentation of the picture, the shape of the hands must be placed harmoniously in the picture without losing the beauty.
Research
The first thing is to study how to create an uncomfortable atmosphere. Eyes and hands are good parts for expressing emotions. The unnatural feeling of combining these two makes the picture more attractive and intriguing.
Inspiration
The images she make for this project are staged recreations of her own experience, and she believe that it is also the experience of many other people. This series deals with issues of discomfort and stress in everyday life. We all care about how others view us, this has become the same as our invisible living standards.
Project Duration
The project began in San Francisco in 2020. Participated in Contemporary Venice 2021, Italy and Small Works 2021, New York.
Operation Flow
It will be displayed in a gallery, and these paintings can be a tool for conversation.
